you guys reference physics and work as the reason, but you have the wrong units.
Work=Force/distance
Power=Work/time
So as time decreases, and work stays constant, Power will increase. Therefore the less time you take to run the same distance, the more power is required.
Why is it sideways?
Work is force x distance, brother.
