Training While Injured (Read 76 times)

SamStevo

I aquired a shin injury as of the other day and until I go see a sport med specialist (this thursday) I'm cross training as much as I can to replace my running. I have a plan to bike a little less than 10mi, and swim most days, but I've never swam in the place of running. Any swim workout ideas? new to the swimming for fitness idea.

Grab a swim-belt.  Head to the deep-end.  Jump in.  Make a "running motion".  Piss off all the lappers because you're taking up a lane.  Don't hunch over.

Judge how "fast" you're going by your breathing.  Keeping an "aerobic" pace is usually equal to your land-based easy run pace +2mins.  So if you're an 8m/mi running, it's a mile every 10mins in the water.

PROTIP: this is boring as hell.  Pick up a cheap waterproof mp3 player and listen to podcasts.  Also, remember to hydrate.

I agree with stadjak - pool running is probably the best replacement for regular running.  You can and should do more intervals in the pool than you would on land.  Google "pool running" - plenty of info out there.

The alter-g treadmill is good in some cases as well (but usually requires going to a sports rehab place and spending a lot of money).

If you can pool-run without a belt (you might not be able to, as a young and presumably lean guy) it's more of a workout.

If you don't have a waterproof mp3 player, you can put a cheap one into a ziplock and rubberband the place where your headphone cord comes out, then stick it on your head and put a swim cap on over it to hold it.

Here is an excellent resource on pool- running: http://wellimtryingtorun.blogspot.com/2010/01/pool-running-posts-listed-by-category.html  The author is also on RA as 'darkwave'.

That's a pretty good resource  ^  .  When I had to do a bunch of pool running I found a good video on YouTube that really helped with form and how to figure out paces.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsamCiwQ9Ww

I rarely ever disagree with Ilanarama, but go with a vest or belt even if you can keep yourself afloat without it.  You'll have to use different muscles if you don't.
