You get used to it. I keep my toe nails covered even when wearing sandals. They are so ugly. I actually catch myself looking at other guys toenails in open toed sandals and jealous of how nice their toe nails look. I even know some runners with nice looking toe nails. I don't know how they do it.

I believe shoes have a lot to do with it. It happened to me once after just one long run on a pair of new shoes. Ditched them, stick with my old brands and never happen again. Though my toes still aren't perfect.

This happens to me more often in the winter than at other times of the year, even with the same shoes. I think that while running in the snow my toes are trying to grip the road. That puts a lot of pressure on my toe nails. Victor

As much as my wife HATES to see my feet, I have a shamelessly proud feeling when I know I am going to loose another toenail... maybe that is wrong, but in a way it is a badge of honor!

I lost two after
walking
the Detroit Half Marathon (in the walk division). I'm about to lose another after running a Resolution Run on New Year's Eve. Oh well...I've been told it has to do with Morton's Toe. It's a hassle in the summer, but doesn't bother me too much in the winter.

I paint my toe nails black. Then they kind of look girly (helps that I AM a girl) but hides teh skanky/falling off nails...
free happiness with every moment!
