unsportsmanlike conduct in cross country (Read 532 times)

Didn't realize some places ran 3 miles.  Thought it was all 5k but I did notice a couple meet results for 4k races.

Illinois runs 3 miles. I just checked and the top four schools in Illinois have their five scorers averaging under 15 for 3 miles for this season, and they will likely get a bit quicker before their championships. Seventh runner for York has run 15:18

    Latent Runner

      Geez those times are fast.

Back in the early to mid 1970s when I ran high school cross country we also ran 3 miles; I made varsity as a freshman and was the top runner on my team and one of the top five in my league by the time I was a junior, however, my fastest 3-mile cross country race was *only* in the mid 15s.  That a school has five guys in the low 15s and faster is very-very impressive (at least in my mind).

      Fat old man PRs:

      • 1-mile (point to point, gravity assist): 5:50
      • 2-mile: 13:49
      • 5K (gravity assist last mile): 21:31
      • 5-Mile: 37:24
      • 10K (first 10K of my Half Marathon): 48:16
      • 10-Mile (first 10 miles of my Half Marathon): 1:17:40
      • Half Marathon: 1:42:13

      You'll ruin your knees!

Well at least it wasn't bullying... or was it?

""...the truth that someday, you will go for your last run. But not today—today you got to run." - Matt Crownover (after Western States)

The school Hersey was in the conference meet my son participated in last weekend. It's rare for them to be this good, and after next year, they'll likely go back to being average.  York is simply an amazing program... one that all other programs only dream of being.

Oh for Pete's Friggin Sake, enough with the "bullying".  Every day on the news it's another bullying allegation

Not everything is bullying and sometimes kids need to learn to fight there own battles.

Well at least it wasn't bullying... or was it?

              lol.

so when i got dusted the other day at a race by some of those fast kids, was that bullying?

My thought is, you do your best to accomplish a long term goal and if someone else gets their feelings hurt -- to bad for them.

              Why is it sideways?

I sorta doubt that a program like, say, York would have this sort of problem. That's all I'm saying.

A question from the other side of the pond.  Looking at the times are these "proper" XC races with ditches, steep slopes, lots of mud and water etc or just a race around a grassy park?

No...these are not european style XC races. Usually run in parks and golf courses in the midwest.

It depends on the course and weather.  My kids have run on some incredibly muddy, hilly courses in New England.  Their home course is considered one of the tougher ones in the area.  I have photos of them covered with mud from head to toe.

I have run some very muddy races, but we don't typically get the kind of frequenty, soaking weather my experience on your side of the pond indicated is normal this time of year.  It's just not as likely to be wet/muddy.

Well, we also don't have European style in terms of intentional obstacles and water crossings.

I went to high school in Europe and ran cross country and would like to point out that you forgot to mention sheep, cow and horse shit.
