Should I just run right away every morning? (Read 417 times)

Don't you need to take a dump first?

As long as I get right out the door, I'm o.k. For the entire run. If I get delayed more than 5-10 minutes, I have to wait. there have been a few times I've been a mile or two in and had to high tail it back for home.

I go right out, on an empty stomach. If I don't run in the morning, I'll be too tired after class, and time in my studio space. (art grad student)

My routine goes something like this:

        • I get up
        • Stumble around for about 10 minutes doing odd things
        • Brew coffee and/or concoct a bottle of Nuun
        • Check workout on RA and start sipping Nuun if I'm having it
        • Toast bagel
        • Drink coffee and eat bagel while surfing the internet
        • Get dressed and start putting on my gear
        • More miscellaneous activities while finishing Nuun if I'm having it
        • Select workout in Garmin and set it on the porch to acquire satellite signal
        • Use restroom and finish gearing up.

This routine takes about an hour.  But, if I'm in a super rush, I can be out the door in 15 or 20 minutes.

I run every morning from 6-6:40am.

At first, it was hard and I didn't like it but I made myself think that lots of people get up for work at 6am, so what I was doing wasn't any different except I run before I shower(I run a home daycare and kids arrive at 7am). That short commute to my front door from my bedroom got to be too easyWink

The night before, I check the weather report on my iPad and set out my clothes and shoes for the next morning run on the nightstand. The alarm rings at 6am and I mindlessly stumble to the bathroom with my clothes. Pee. Get dressed. Run a brush through my hair(too early for ponytails, so I wear a hat). Go out to the kitchen and drink some water, grab a piece of gum, lace up my shoes and off I go.

          2 things helped me:

#1. Don't think, just do. Mindlessness is good at this time of the morning, otherwise your good sense will talk yourself out of running. Too tired. Too cold. Too stiff. Too early. Too windy. Pillows, blankets, warm hubbyWink

#2. Check the weather and lay out clothes night before. Less thinking, see above^^^^

Tomorrow, I hope to start my morning running routine.  Thanks for the tips.  I just have to do it, mindlessly I guess.  Kind of how I get up for work right now.  I'm to the point for work where I usually wake up 5 minutes before my alarm goes off anyway.  If I just get up about 45 min earlier and get a 4 mile run in each morning, I'll be back at the house about the time I would get up anyways.  Here's hoping I have the will power to create a good habit.

I will echo many of the comments above, mainly, as the good folks at Nike would say, just do it. If you are a runner you are dedicated to getting your run in, you'll find a routine that works for you. You can be out the door pretty quickly, no need to eat before a 4 mile run, it just may take some experience to figure out whether you need 5 or 15 minutes. And don't underestimate the need to, ahem, take care of business, as some have less delicately noted. You may go out the door thinking you're fine, but 1/2 mile down the road feel very strongly otherwise. Good to know whether there are places to stop on your route, I have found this to be a bigger concern in the morning than other times of the day.

              Some benefits:

              -  it is a great feeling to have gotten that out of the way before your regular day starts.

              -  I don't know your family situation, but it is often the time that least interferes with family time - no one else is probably up at that time anyway,  they won't even know you're gone.

              - it is best in the summertime (actually the only time I really do it) - coolest part of the day.

              - good preparation for races, which are always first thing in the morning.

One issue is that while 4 miles may be no problem, it may be tougher to manage if you need to get in 8 miles.

              Good luck!

here's hoping you are up and getting ready to, or already, running today.  I get up at 4:45 every day but don't hit the road or gym until almost 6.  I need that time to allow things to 'move along' so that I don't have issues on the road.  Even on days that I am not running I still get up that early - it is simply a habit now.  good luck to you!!

Outside of runs longer than 6 miles, all my runs are done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. My usual morning routine looks like this:

                  - Wake-up between 4-4:30

                  - Bathroom & Water stop

                  - Dress & gear up

                  - Out the door 10 - 15 minutes later

Running in New England during the winter makes makes this routine a little harder especially on sub-zero days (which I save for lifting days). However during the summertime, these morning runs are awesome as its still cool but not cold! This is how I've been runing & lifting for the last 3-4 years.

I used to have issues with getting my workouts in if I waited until the afternoon or evening as I tended to be irritated during the day. If I plan on doing a "long run" or running with my boys via stroller(my favorite thing to do) I tend to save it for the weekends or later in the afternoon.

Start off light and easy to allow your body to adjust especially if going on an empty stomach. Maybe start off with a lite 2 miler if you've never ran on an empty stomach. Then change according to how you feel. Hope this helps.

                  Mostly harmless

For me, early morning runs are mostly reserved for the summer or for my Saturday long run.  I run early on Saturday's because I'm an early riser by nature and if I'm done with my run by 9:30 it won't interfere with other weekend plans.

In the colder months I run during my lunch break at work or in the afternoon because it is warmer.  In the summer I get up around 4:30 so I can get most of my run in before the sun rises.  I follow the same routine as most of the folks here.

Get up, coffee, download, dress, run. For weekday shorter runs I don't usually eat anything but will drink some water. For long runs I'll have a plain bagel or a fruit and nut bar.

Yep. I get up at 4:00 and am out the door by 4:30. On days I go longer I get up earlier. I've been doing this for a few years so it's a mindless habit now.

Use whatever mantra or trick you can to get yourself up and going. In a couple of weeks it'll be a habit.

I run early in the morning too, up around four thirty and usually running at the latest by five. My biggest thing was learning to get to bed the night before, I try to be in bed by nine and sleeping by nine thirty at the very latest. I really need solid hours of sleep to feel good the next day, and getting up so early requires a full night's rest!! I think it took about a month for me to get used to this schedule, but i have pretty much been running early mornings for almost two years now...

Yepper.  I get up at 5:00 but can't get out of the door until I'm sure I am completely "done".  There's nothing worse than getting the urge 2.5 miles into a 5 milers.

                              • I get up 3:30
                              • Brew coffee

                              • bathroom
                              • dressed
                              • out the door

This routine takes about an 45 minutes

Trying to get back to this routine. REALLY helps to have like minded running partners/idiots to meet every morning.
