          Well done Andy.

My week was (loosely) a recovery week but was only really that in the sense that mileage was a little lighter, as it ended up with a lot of surprisingly quick efforts.  Little bit sluggish at the start of the week but was feeling good from Wed on, and Thursday's steady run was surprisingly fast and comfortable with a workout in the legs from the day prior.  Couple more weeks to build then it's Waterfront HM, hopefully the enjoyable autumn conditions continue.

Andy - Congrats!  Looking forward to hearing how it played out.

My week was a mixed bag.  I had the midweek failed workout but then had a pretty good "Key session" yesterday.  2 x 50 mins of race pace, ended up being 10.8k in each block.  After the first hour it warmed up significantly.  It was probably around 20C with high sun and no wind for most of the run, which is higher than I'd like for a hard workout or race.  I lost a lot of fluid and thought I detected cramp with 10 mins left of the second block but it didn't come on.  I definitely felt like I was working hard.  It would have been about a 104km week if not for the shortened Wednesday run but my coach told not to care about numbers and milestones so I won't...

Dave - Apple is Apple in this comparison heh, they're doing to Garmin the same they did to Nokia.
Nokia rested on their laurels, ignored the touch screen trend and died a slow death.
Garmin is innovating but I feel like they won't ever be able to adopt something like Wear OS out of pride.
And the thing is that the "serious runner market" is much smaller than we think.
When Apple and Google come around with true smart watches that can hail Ubers, pay the bill with NFC or do turn by turn navigation in google maps, and whatever other wizardry they can pull with AI, the entire new generation of runners will probably prefer that and won't even hear about Garmin.

Andy - Spectacular! A PR by over 3 minutes though we knew that already didn't we since you were breaking PRs in training recently 😎

DW - LOL that whole episode where Microsoft bought Nokia was quite funny.

me - I took on way more elevation than I should on a recovery week, but despite being super tired I suppose it might help me on the long run with extra muscular endurance.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I do think that one big distinction between Garmin and Nokia is that the word "Garmin" has become a generic term.  We don't say "sportswatch," we say "Garmin."  In the same way that we use "Google" when we mean "search the internet" or "Xerox" when we mean "make a paper copy."  Nokia never hit that level of ubiquity.

OTOH, a brand name become generic doesn't guarantee long term market dominance (see: Xerox) and sometimes the brand can lose its trademark protection as a result.

And I think you make a really good point about how small our "serious runner" cohort is.  We're really not as valuable as we think we are.

Flavio - nice post-PR week.  I don't think the elevation is a bad thing on a recovery week - forces you to allocate the work among different muscles.

Steve - your coach is very wise.  That Saturday run was very nice.

Marky_Mark - I see a lot of multi-use path conflict in your week.  Training-wise, it's always good to finish the week feeling better than you started.

                        ***

                        My week:

53 miles running, 1000 yards swimming and 3 hours pool-running.

                        M: 90 minutes pool-running.
T: Upper body weights/core and 8 miles easy (9:24) plus drills (no strides).
W: Streaming yoga and 10 miles easy (9:19) plus drills and hill sprints.
Th: 90 minutes pool-running and upper body weights/core.
F: 10 miles, including a short track workout of 3200, 1600 in 14:04 (7:07/6:57) and 6:44 with 5:15 jog in between. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
Sa: Streaming yoga and 10 miles easy (8:54), plus drills and strides.
Su: 14 miles progressive, split as first 5 miles averaging 9:07 pace, next 4 miles averaging 7:49 pace, next 5 miles averaging 7:27 pace, plus a mile cooldown. Followed with injury prevention work and 500 yards recovery swimming.

The first half of the week was recovery from Sunday's half-marathon, and then I reintroduced some faster running. I also shifted full time to wearing a big toe spacer for all my runs, including workouts.  (hat tip to Flavio for mentioning toe separators - my PT had the same idea, but she wants me to wear full toe separators when NOT running, and only a big toe spacer when I do run.)

Wearing the big toe spacer requires some adjustment - it feels like a rock in each shoe between my big and second toes. But running with it feels great - I feel much more stable when I run, especially when I push off. And I'm running faster for the same effort - not surprising since I essentially have better wheels to pair with my engine.

Either way, this definitely meets the goal even with a short course as the goal was sub 6:00 total. Given your current PR is a 19:35, I think we can safely say you would have gotten a PR either way

Yup. Left it at home and the race had no extras.

yup goal was 5:57/mi and 5:55 was my personal‘don’t go faster’ limit today for fear of blowing up.

It’s not short by enough for me to not count it since the honest truth is I could have maintained it another few seconds.  Maybe I’ll find out if it’s certified.

                              the direction you go out

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

I really don’t think Garmin is going that way. If anything, their revenue has done very well in the past few years in the fitness segment, even as so many other competitors have entered the market.

Also - don’t forget Garmin has a big space in both aviation and marine. Nobody is flying their plane with Apple equipment.
