Fall northeast ultra suggestions? (Read 149 times)

I'm looking for suggestions of fall ultras (50mi or 100k) in the Northeast.  I live near Philadelphia and would like to keep the race within about 6 hours just so I can drive.

Last fall MMTR was my first ultra, I had a great time, and while I would run it again, I wouldn't mind trying something different.

Has anyone run anything that they liked?  Thanks for sharing!

There is the Stone Cat 50 MIler

I have never run any of these, but I do have friends that have run and love Stone Cat.  It is a 4x12.5 mile loop.

Let me know if you have any questions about NJ Trail Series.   I have done all their races.  I design the race courses and am the co RD

I second Stone Cat! I haven't done the 50 but it's the same course (trail) as the marathon (just 4x laps instead of 2x without the extra 1.22 mile add on). I was super slow and got all scraped up and muddy but don't think I've ever had as much fun at a race.

Not really the Fall but the Somerville Road Runners have a Marathon/12 Hour/24 Hour Ultra (road) every July that tends to sell out really quickly. I haven't run this one, but it is laps around a lake that I've run some 5ks at and it's pretty flat and easy.

There some great races listed on this website in Western NY: http://www.wny-ultra.org/#calendar .

I've run Virgil Crest (Awesome, Beautiful, Tough), Finger Lakes (Well organized, Beautiful), Green Lakes (Another awesome course, Beautiful Lake). You can't go wrong with any of these races. If you like timed events, BPAC 6-hour and Mind the Ducks 12-hour are both great races. Can Lake 50 is a great destination road ultra. There is also the TNF Bear Mountain. I have run it but it is supposed to be a good run.

You should repost this in the Ultra Running user group and/or check the sticky thread at the top of their forum that lists races some of them are running. If Sept 21-22 isn't too early for you, the North Coast 24 Hour Run in Cleveland is a great, well run race if you don't mind a .9 mile loop in a small park on the lake front.

Some friends of mine did Virgil Crest last year and loved it...

And if you want a preview of part of the Virgil Crest Course, you could sign up for the Virgil Monster Marathon: http://www.fingerlakesrunners.org/wordpress/races/trail-runs/monster-marathon-half-marathon-trail-runs/

It runs the section from the Lift House Aid station to Rock Pile Aid station. It is usually 3 weeks before Virgil Crest. I ran it last year before running Virgil Crest. I can say it definitely helped me mentally through this section. During the marathon you run this section out-and-back twice. It is a tough section. So when I got into this section a Virgil Crest, I was thinking to myself "I only have to run this once!"

So, Virgil Crest and the Can Lake 50 are out because I have a Ragnar Relay that is too close to both of them.  Stone Cat doesn't seem to have much info up on the website yet and I cant say that I am thrilled with a multi-loop ultra.  I didn't see a 50 mile option in the NJ Trail series, did I just miss it?

I am down to JFK, Tussey Mountainback, or repeating MMTR.

JFK seems a bit pricey ($200) and the last 8 miles on road isn't what I would ideally look for.  However, it has a huge field so they must be doing something right.  Tussey looks to be pretty nice, and I loved MMTR last year.

Does anyone have any experience with either JFK or Tussey?

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

You might also consider the Vermont 50. It's about 6 hours from Philly, so definitely on the far side. Starts and ends at Mount Ascutney.

I haven't run it  and I can't find anyone on this forum who has, but I've read other reviews and they are positive. It's got about 8,000 ft elevation gain.
