Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2020 (Read 539 times)

    JMac - nah I almost certainly wouldn't count this if I PR'ed.  It's around 200m net downhill (starts around 500m, finishes around 300m), but there are no ups whereas Kerikeri had a lot of climbing the first 7km (for similar overall net downhill).  I've wanted to do it for a while but it's always around the same time as Waterfront which I've done as part of the HM Series, so this year was a good chance to have a go.

     

    I almost didn't want to do it in case I PR and then anyone looking at my Athletics NZ page will be all like 'lol Southern Lakes' and I have no control over what is on there.  But what the hell.  A chance to run down the Crown Range Road is just too good to miss.

        Sure. Now that I know Mark isn’t running it for a PR, I 10000% think he should run it 

         

        There’s something cool about seeing how fast you can run something. LetsRun is a cesspool these days, but 15 years ago, it was really a site for serious runners. There is an absolute CLASSIC thread on there about running a downhill mile in the middle of the night. It turned out (although few knew at the time) that it was written by David Torrence, who turned out to be the American record holder for the indoor 1K. He passed away a couple of years ago, which made the thread pop again. If you ever have a chance, you should read through it, and take your time. It really shows you what the joy of running really is about, especially for a college kid.

          It's a little like my personal equivalent of the 1:59 challenge.  I just wanna see how fast I can go!  And have a whole lotta fun on the way.  While wearing bright pink shoes.

              Southern Lakes?  If you really don't want the dubious PR then enter under a fake name.  You could go with one of the old standys such as Hugh Jass, Turd Ferguson or Bob Loblaw.

                JMac - Half off, which was nice. Ended up with a medium. Great sleeve length, but still a bit wider in the body than I figured it would be. I kinda think I would have preferred the two-tone one, but for the extra savings all black is fine by me.
                And it is ridiculously thin and light - just to pick it up without knowing what it is you wouldn't think it would be much good at all. And it still looks like I'll have that low 40s/high 30s and rain condition to further test it in Friday.
                And I'd absolutely be heartbroken if that thing tore.

                  JMac -Great sleeve length, but still a bit wider in the body than I figured it would be. 

                   

                  This shows how ridiculously thin you are. I tried on a small, which my usual size for things, and it was way too restricting. The medium is perfect for me. It's the slimmest jacket I think I've ever owned! It's even designated as a "slim fit" by the company. Just to be clear, you did by buy the normal one, not the trail one right? The trail one is a normal fit. When you open both links you'll see how they're different fits.

                    I definitely have the normal one, and it is certainly the slimmest jacket I own as well, just not quite as slim as I expected. I didn't even know there was a trail version, but now I kinda want one of those, too, so I could wear it with a hydration pack or vest.

                    Oh, and I'm not "ridiculously" thin! I prefer the term "lean". Though on occasion a trip to the store has me doubting myself and I begin to wonder which camp I was able to escape.

                        Likely differences in perception of what "slim fit" means, or different body shapes accounting for the difference in fit.

                          22.4 for me.

                           

                          I ran 32km this morning so no chance of me hitting the celery.  In fact I spent a good chunk of the run thinking about what junk food I might eat for the rest of the day.

                           

                          Having dropped a bit of weight over the last 18 months, I've noticed it's impacted clothing sizes.  I'm normally a 30" waist now whereas I used to be 32".  Shirts sometimes an S, sometimes an M whereas I always used to be M.

                            17.4, and I just finished lunch.  Not sure why, but I'm a few pounds lighter than is usual for this point in a cycle.  Usually while I'm basebuilding I put on a few pounds and then drop them once I start tempos & VO2max work.

                            Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (April '20)

                            Revised 2020 Goals:  40+ mpw (getting there), 5K<19:30 (not yet); Mile<5:40 (done), no injuries
