Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2020 (Read 618 times)

I ran the Christchurch Parkrun this morning. Conditions were awesome calm and cool, and the course flat asphalt path around Hagley Park.

I warmed up slowly after meeting and chatting to a mid 40s guy who was warming up at about 6.30 km pace . He reckoned his fastest 5k was 14.57  which I doubted but could be true as he was 17 at the time.

Anyway after a quick briefing we were off. About 250 runners and walkers.

I was lacking confidence in what exactly I could achieve from this 5k. 6 weeks since my calf injury and a couple of workouts suggested 3.45/km or 18.45 pace.

I hit the 1st km in 3.41 in about 10th place.

The 2nd km slipped back to 3.45 which made me think my guess of 3.45/km was about right.

I was pacing with a young guy who had moved about 2m in front of me.

The 3rd km I was able to pick back up to a 3.41 km and I was feeling pretty good still waiting for the 5k chest burn to hit me.

Km 4 was bad. We slipped back to 3.47 just through a little laziness.

I shouted to the other guy come on only 1km to go and we picked up the pace. I was feeling better than I have ever felt at the end of a 5k and was able to close in a 3.33 km.

Final time was 18.29 in 7th place.

I'm really pleased and now it's time to knuckle down and keep training to improve from here.

I'm meeting Steve tomorrow morning for a jog in the park which will be fun.

Jmac my result is age graded to 81 %

      Piwi - really nice race.

My race is at 2pm.  Conditions pretty good, moderately muddy, but pretty good for a July cross country.

Aim is 36:00 (8km cross country).  Two 4km laps, so secondary aim is a negative split.

      PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

      40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

      2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

      2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

Steve - you need to update the race table. You're missing three of my races, Piwi's and possibly Mark's.

        PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

        40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

          Good luck Chris.

The course, and me were a bit quicker than I thought it would be.

I did 35:17.  I also managed a 5s negative split, so pacing was very good.

Piwi - great job, if you weren't dying at the end you might have a bit more in the tank too!  Hagley Park is runner's paradise so doing Parkrun there must've been great fun.

We haven't had a good age-grading discussion in a while, JMac loves those.  Interestingly all of my recent PR's are around the same mark in terms of age-graded performance.

Watson - nice job, always tough to gauge pace on those XC courses, well done on the negative split.  I always find XC is harder for that as the soft surface tends to take more out of your legs than you realise.

Mark the age grade comment was tongue in cheek as I know when you age you just get slower and you cant compare fairly. I doubt I could have run 16 mins as a 30 year old...but it makes for some good banter  and motivation

Mine are there already thanks Steve. No idea what the goal will be for Mount Maunganui Half but I kinda prefer it when I just go out and run so maybe it’ll stay that way.

You’ve done the 50+ team proud!  I agree with what Flavio said on Strava....run another Parkrun in a couple of weeks time and you’ll be faster (you haven’t raced in 2 years).  And if you get properly serious then purchase some Vaporflys and you’ll be a Sub18 runner again.

                              5k - 17:53 (4/19)   10k - 37:53 (11/18)   Half - 1:23:18 (4/19)   Full - 2:50:43 (4/19)

Mikey yeah good idea. I have a 10k at the end of August so will fit a Parkrun in between. My Parkrun is on a gravel track and wont be as fast a course but still a good hit out.
