James - kinda embarrasing for the cyclists, no?

darkwave - They probably weren't too embarrassed, or they shouldn't have been, anyway.  Maybe I should've called them "bicycle riders," as "cyclist" brings to mind images of spandex and high self-regard.  These were just a couple of women out for a casual ride who didn't accelerate at the base of the hill and paid for it near the top.

zebano - Great RR, and great race too.  Why was it called Mines of Spain?  Also, what was it like running with the mask early in the race?  The half I may run in October is going to require runners to wear a "neck gaiter" (I think that's what some people call a buff and I call a neckwarmer) at the start that will be handed out at bib pickup.  I tried running with one for a couple of weeks in March/April and started getting upper lung soreness that still comes back occasionally.  Sort of like a frog in my throat feeling.  I've read in several places that masks don't block oxygen or affect running, but it seems too much of a coincidence that this problem arose just during the brief time when I was wearing a mask for it not to have been related.  On your time trial, I expect you'll do better with a pacer.  That was my experience with mile TTs earlier this year.

As for hill workouts, I've never tried the ten-second maximum-effort steep hill sprints that Brad Hudson and some other coaches use.  What I've read suggests that those workouts will make you stronger/faster and protect you from injury as long as they don't injure you first, and as injury-prone as I am, it doesn't seem like a good bet.  My standard hill workout, which I try to do at least once in a cycle, is 10 times at maybe 400-800-meter effort on a moderately steep hill that takes me about as long as a 200-meter rep, so let's guess that it's 160-180 meters.  I'll run it in 36-38 seconds and jog down and walk at the bottom for about 1:40-1:45 rest.  I don't try to hit specific times for the run up or the jog down, just go by effort and check the times later to see how I did.

    Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

DWave - It was just a financial decision. I'll get the Pros if I like the Speeds enough. If I don't, then I've saved myself ~$40 towards a different pair of fancy shoes.
I can't decide whether or not the $40 delta between the two was a good decision by Saucony or not. The pricing for the Pro is clearly intended to undercut Nikes fancy shoes, but at the same time it's really not all that much different than the Speed (so maybe there isn't that much of a performance difference, so why bother?). But they can't lower the price of the Speeds because then it would be in line with their other trainers, so....

Watson - Congrats on the permanent position!

Zebano - Track time trials are tough! A pacer for even part of it would likely help in a big way.
Mines of Spain? That's one I've heard of quite a bit, but aside from those mentions I don't really know anything about it. Nice little race report, thanks for that.
Also, you play chess?? I thought I was the only one in this thread who did. Ever play online? Chess.com? Lichess?

JMac - How are April and her mom doing? And yourself, I suppose!

No LR this week - DD3 came down with a stomach bug a the combo of little/no sleep Friday and Saturday and not wanting to abandon DW to taking care of her by herself for just a run stopped that plan. I did get to sneak away after putting the girls to bed and even got in a few miles on trails. A combo of buffed-out walking trail and technical (roots, steps, etc. No rocks), which was really nice. I need to get out there again.

James I'm going to leave a link to wikipedia here because while I've read some of the things at the historical center my mind is a little fuzzy on the details.  That said the Meskwaki tribe mined lead there and traded it to Julien Dubuque (for whom the town is named) who had a grant from the spanish king to settle and mine the area, naming it the "Mines of Spain".

I did wear a buff and honestly it didn't feel like it impacted my breathing much, but it definitely made me warmer and pulling it down was a huge relief. I imagine wearing it at mile 4 would have been a totally different experience. I kept pulling it up as I passed people for the first couple miles but soon I could see they weren't bothering so I didn't either since I was passing everyone quite quickly.

              Darkwave - ah, a masochist I see

You’re already back on track with your running, that’s great to see.

Mark - LOL, yeah, I’ve posted a picture of the hill we had to climb just to start the warmup haha, insane!

Zebano - It’s very frustrating to be honest. COVID is completely under control for over 3 months now, people are crowding beaches and pubs every week, but somehow running races is deemed risky.

There are a few races going on, but just a few. ParkRun has set up a protocol for races to reopen, so hopefully we'll have those come back in a few weeks.

I’m eyeing a race in October (that was supposed to be back in May) that could be very interesting for a PR attempt. Very deep field.

Mask usage is mandatory in closed spaces (stores, supermarkets, offices, trains, buses etc), people mostly comply.

You are an absolute maniac for racing twice in a week. Damn, you are indestructible.

James - masks are horrendous for running.

Zebano congrats on a great trail race. You get 3rd and no award ! That sucks.

Nice on the 3k time trial. Always tough but you got a benchmark.

Flavio yeah these first races back are keenly contested as everyone is frothing to race.

James I injured myself on hillsprints last year. I was doing 10x 10 secs all out. I think it was a hammy ache i ended up with.

I've overtaken a few 80 year old cyclists before  but some of them are now on those electric bikes.

I have some minor shin soreness after playing half court basketball with my  sons and their friends on Saturday.

Highlight was my 22 year old taking a half court shot which hit me clean in the head. Needless to say he was in hysterics and I lost a few more of what brain cells I have left

I'm probably going to start a 5K/10k training program in the next couple of weeks. Not because I think there will be races but because it's the easiest to time trial.

It's like these 4 cases have just materialised out of nowhere as there's no obvious link to the border (at this stage).  If there's those 4, there are bound to be others as well.  There were a bunch of announcements last week about how everyone should have masks in their home just in case, and that at some point community spread was inevitable, which really raises the question of what the government might have known about but didn't tell us.

TBH, I'm not really coping well with the news.  It sounds selfish but one of my first reactions was, oh crap, big question mark over the marathon in 7 weeks.  Work is tough going at the moment - it's always a demanding environment but it's been more stressful of late - and working towards the marathon has been one thing really keeping me going.  Now I'm not sure if it's going to happen.

I fully expect it to be extended to 4 weeks.  And when it reaches Christchurch again, we'll go to level 3 which takes out my next race.  Obviously missing my last one thanks to people coming into work when sick makes it worse.  I know it's selfish but so be it - what amounts to minor symptoms (or none at all like Mrs JMac) for 99.99% of people shouldn't cause reactions like this.
