Watching you guys debate when things can happen again brings me back to March in the US. Now we're just cranky here and resigned to 2020 being a lost year. We're just hoping for 2021 to come ASAP

I guess we're fortunate that we know we got on top of this once so we should be able to do it again, especially as the government has moved swiftly to contain it (cf. Melbourne).  Still don't know where this second outbreak has come from but it's a fair bet that it was a border issue that somehow slipped through.  If not, we're probably all screwed.

If Rotorua is canned I would seriously consider running a TT marathon.  Laps at Whenuapai or on Tamaki Drive would both be an option.  I've put in too much work this year not to have a crack at it.

I'm hearing rumours that Auckland will be at level 4 by Saturday and the rest of the country at level 3, for at least 4 weeks.  So that will rule out all races during that period.  I'll bite my tongue about our govt.

That’s a shame as I’d be genuinely interested in what you mean by that. Too strict?

yeah, way over the top reaction. And what annoys me the most is the incompetence in managing the borders. Couldn’t even isolate one of the most isolated countries in the world. It also gets annoying with the party political broadcasts dressed up as a health update each day.

I should admit I wasn’t a fan before Covid either.

            Winter Is Coming...

See Cal, the good thing is when you've botched the response so badly, the virus can't get through so many people as quickly in the winter. In NYC, probably 30% of people are immune at this point. Gotta look at the positives!

Also, without getting into banned topics territory, 17 new cases for NZ is not good. This is not going to be as quick of a fix for you guys as I had originally hoped unfortunately. Hopefully folks though stay diligent in lockdown and really try to squash this. But if the real case load is north of 100, you're going to have a real tough few weeks/months ahead. Good luck guys.

We find out later today what level lockdowns the country goes into.

My running motivation is draining from me but I cant blame covid. If we do go into full lockdown it might save my running as it's the only hobby I'm allowed to do

I was going to say you can't surf? And then I forgot you guys live in backwards land where it's winter. They should fix that while in lockdown, good time to do it.

At level 4, surfing is not allowed.  But I think at level 3 it is ok?

My prediction is that the announcement is for the next two weeks Auckland is level 3, the rest of the court level 2.

If where I am stays level 2, then Wellington Cross Country is canned.  But on Saturday our club will do its own Cross Country as we can stay below 100.

So an outdoor activity that a person does by oneself is verboten? I presume the justification would be to not use some ocean-faring resources to rescue a person when they could be dealing with viral matters, but would those resources be dealing with that anyway?

                        This just boggles my mind.

Yeah, it is for rescuers.  I guess during lockdown, there's a risk that all these bored people end up doing daredevil stuff, such as seeing how far out to sea on their surfboard they can go.

I doubt we go back to level 4 though.

The Minister of Health has just said exactly that.  At this stage, everything they've found seems connected to the original mystery case.  I'd say we've got (at least) another 2 weeks at Level 3 in Auckland.  I don't think they'll let the rest of the country get too out of step, or else everyone will just try and sneak out of Auckland, so I'd say reasonable odds you guys are still at Level 2.

Overall, Steve, I actually think they did the right thing to buy themselves 3 days to get to the bottom of the issue and figure out what needed to be done.  It shouldn't have got to this point if they'd controlled the border properly - apparently up until a week ago, 2/3rds of border staff hadn't been tested which just seems ridiculous.

Yeah, the lack of border staff and international flight staff testing has been poor.

They published where all the roadblocks are.  It would be near impossible to cover all the back roads (or stop particularly entrepreneurial farmers letting people through their land).  It's a bit easier southbound as there's a limited number of bridges over the Waikato river but there's back roads through the Hunuas etc.
