It's fun reading everyone's history, likes/dislikes, etc.  Thanks for sharing!

Darkwave - cats and pool running give us some common ground.  I love cats!  I have 2.  I don't love pool running as much, but it's great cross training.  I generally try to do it once/week to mix things up and save the joints from all the pounding.  I can't believe you have a pool running blog.  I'll have to check it out.

Mark - good luck with the marathon training!  I don't think I could ever survive the training to run a good marathon.

Dan - congrats on a baby on the way!  That will certainly complicate things, eh?  My kids are 13 and 15.  I can't even fathom going through the infant stage with them again.

grapes - what's wrong with Nuun?  I like it too!

James - I'm with you on trying to get the mileage up a bit.  Once I get over 35 I find it difficult to get all the miles in.  But I do think I would benefit from upping the mileage, so am working on that now.

Brewing Runner - I got the new edition of Daniels to follow the HM training plan due to suggestions from this thread.  I can't speak to how good it is since I'm only starting now, but it does give you a lot of guidance in figuring out your paces.  But a few of the guys on this thread are fans of Daniels and have followed his plans, so I'm sure they'll chime in.  If you use Daniels, you'll have some people on here to give you advice if you have questions.  I see that as a big bonus, as we all need knowledgeable people to bounce ideas off of every once in a while.

    800m:  2:20.3 (2015) | 1 Mile:  5:13 (2016) | 5K: 18:32 (2010) | 10km: 39:55 (2012) HM: 1:28 (2013)

      My week:

I again fell short of my 40 mile goal for the week, finishing with 38.  This was due to me not realizing I actually had no time to run on Christmas Day, so I tried to make my other runs longer, but couldn't add enough miles to hit 40 without overdoing it.  But I did manage to get my long run back up to 10 miles today, so that's progress.  Next week I'll jump into Phase 2 of the Daniels training plan; looking forward to adding some structured work-outs rather than just doing the easy mileage.

Thanks for the support on the second kiddo coming in June.  I figure marathon training while having 2 kids under 3 will mean I just won't sleep....ever again.

Christmas week, so my runs were all over the place...

Monday: 7 easy early afternoon, 5.3 in the evening + striders

Tuesday: 11.5 mile workout (2 mile warm up @7:03, 5x1 mile @6:02 w/ .5 recovery @7:03, 2 mile cool down) on the treadmill

Wednesday: Christmas! 11.22 mile run outside in shorts and a long sleeve shirt since is was a beautiful day at about 38 degrees + striders

Thrusday: 6 easy on the treadmill over lunch and at night

Friday: 5.85 on the treadmill easy in the morning and 6.75 mile on the treadmill over lunch

Saturday:  17.5 miles during an ice storm in Norther Wisconsin.  It was 34 degrees with light freezing rain which resulted in my outer shirt freezing.  Roads where literally smooth black ice, so I had to run on the shoulder and ditches to have any traction running  around the lake at my parent's place.  Ran the last 5 miles with my dad so my pace was much slower at the end.  Was supposed to be 17 at 6:40 but it was nearly impossible to go faster that 7 min with the footing

Sunday: Back in the city so I did 8.25 on the river road and had to go to work.  Will get in another 4 after work tonight.

Total for the week will be about 90 miles with striders included.

Next week I'll have just 1 workout and 1 long run and then It'll be 2 workouts a week plus a long run until June.

Goals for 2020: Go sub 2:45 (and hopefully sub 2:40 in the fall marathon), Get under 16:30 in the 5k, and sub 1:18:00 in the half.  The 5k and half marathon times are pretty aggressive considering i'm not planning on tapering at all and will be treating them as workouts  We'll see.  I think with a taper and having either as a goal race, I could, but racing those times in the middle of a 80-100 mile week may not be possible.  But go big or go home.  :-)

        2023 Goals

Hahaha!  You’ll be fine.  I’ve heard that the transition from 2 to 3 kids is nothing compared to the transition from 1 to 2.  You know what you’re doing now.  You got this!  Running more will help you 😉

I can vouch for going from 2 to 3 kiddos being easier than going from 1 to 2. Or zero to one. The older ones can be quite a help.

12x 400m today. Kicking off training again. 98.7% sure I'll be going after sub-3 at the Cowtown marathon in Ft. Worth on March 1.

I can't even contemplate having the first kid

I'm Flavio from the south of Brazil. No, don't worry, no Amazon fires here. Just delicious and plenty fruits and food.

I live with my wife and we don't have kids, by choice. I have nephews instead so I can give them back to their parents once they start being brats.

I've started running about 9 years ago and I have probably tried every wrong choice there is. Up until last year I had never done workouts safe for a quick training block in 2016. I was always getting injured when I tried. It turns out I just needed strength training. Once I started that I could do workouts just fine. That's why I'm such a PITA in preaching that people stop being lazy Lucies and start doing proper strength training (not a couple rounds of planks and crunches). It turns out strength training is the answer to 90% of questions. Need to run faster? Need to run longer? Need to avoid injuries? Am depressed? No problem! Just do it.

Anyway, after doing everything wrong for 8 years last year I decided to hire a coach. After a 3 year spell with no PRs I finally found 2 in the 3000 and in the 1500, which is by the way my favorite distance, if only, because I look a lot more like Nick Willis than Meb or Geb.

I'm now targeting a half marathon in 2020.02.16 (intentional rebel date format) in Scandicci, near Firenze, Italy, aiming at less than my current PR of 1:24:25 from 2015.

Training has been good so far though I'm hitting a tough period the last week or so due to a ridiculous heat wave hitting our region.

And when I say heat wave it's like a real heat wave, not that mild slightly warm weather that hits New York or New Zealand. Think Australian outback nothing grows here kind of heat wave.

Me and the wife are going to Italy at the end of January to start the process of recognition of our Italian citizenships. We'll likely stay in Italy afterwards and I'm assuming zero culture shock considering I was raised eating nothing but polenta, pizza and spaghetti. It might make no sense to a lot of you guys, but for us being recognized as legitimate children of mother Italia will be tremendous.

To be honest with you guys this will be my 6 year in this thread and the main reason I keep coming back is the banter that goes on around here. The running discussion is cool but it's nice to be back in 5th grade doing fart jokes sometimes.

Here's to a year without injuries, with a lot of strength training, running and PRs all around.

                    PRs: 1500 4:54.1 2019 - 5K 17:53 2023 - 10K 37:55 2023 - HM 1:21:59 2021

First off I want to commend any and all of you running with newborns... that is crazy difficult, if for no other reason than it's nearly impossible to get decent sleep (and that's not even considering the schedule implications).

I'm Shawn, 39, male, Iowa, father of 4. I've been running roughly since late 2013 when I started to lose weight and because my brother challenged me to run a marathon (in retrospect, not a good idea at 240 lbs). Training went well until I had IT band trouble a couple months before the race and I eventually crashed and burned to a 4:28. At that point I knew I wanted to keep running.

Nowadays my PRs are all very modest, mostly due to a slew of injuries to my right hamstring and calf that 5 different physical therapists have been unable to solve or even diagnose similarly. I took all of May off and things have been better since then but a long ways from perfect. Some days I go to race and the hamstring tightens up, other days it doesn't bother me. Such is life.  Beyond injuries I struggle with asthma, allergies, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections and generally having non-running genes (I don't know many other men who can run 40-50mpw and struggle to break 20 in the 5k). I do a ton of trail running because most of my injuries seem to disappear on the technical grounds.

                          My current PRs are 1600 - 5:23, 5K - 19:33, 10k - 45:24, Half - 1:38:57, 3:37:17

My favorite races are short trail races (< half distance -- my current favorite is Living History Farms in Des Moines every November) though I do very few of them. I plan to change that this year. I also love the mile and plan to focus the early year on breaking 5:00 though I'm as of yet, nowhere close to it.  I'll also take a crack at the half when the weather gets a little cooler in the fall.

I'm starting off the year with a 10 mile trail race in Kansas called Psycho Wyco in late February then the Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines in April. There's a local half in May I'll probably run as well but that's up in the air at this point.

My recent training has been a lot of miles for me (~60/week the last 3 weeks) with 20 minute tempos, longer moderate-effort tempos and the occasional fartlek to maintain some speed. I'm probably going to roll into the new year on a cutback week as this is pushing things and I have a sinus infection right now and it really showed in my Thursday mod-effort 12 miler.

                          1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

My usual week lately, except I was able to run the scenic waterfront or trail routes instead of the tedious suburban routes I usually have to, since I was on the first week of a two week vacation from work. (I live in NW Portland but work out in the 'burbs, and usually do my daily runs at lunchtime.)
