Mark I see Hayden Wilde ran 28.58 at Governers Bay to Lyttelton 10k. Not bad for a triathlete

He's in crazy form right now.  Good chance of an Olympic qualifier I reckon.

...Compare that to my tempo run last week, same course, almost same temperature, which I ran in 44:09 for a 7:07/mile pace...

Jason - Many people here & elsewhere say that you should be able to race a half at the same pace that you run a 6-mile tempo in training.  (That seems valid for me; I've never run a 6-mile tempo, but the pace in my half PR was 4 sec/mile slower than my pace in a 5-mile tempo three weeks before the race.)  If you ran a 6.2-mile tempo at 7:07 pace while training, you probably were in shape to race (not necessarily time trial) around 1:33-1:34.  That's assuming you had enough mileage, enough tapering, and good weather.  That tempo sounds like a pretty hard effort, especially so close to your time trial.  Your trial was on Friday; how many days before was the tempo?

Me - I was disappointed but not surprised to find out that my last remaining option for a half this year, a small one outside of Atlanta, has gone virtual.  The organizers cited a lack of registrations rather than virus issues; I guess it was a chicken-and-egg thing, as I certainly wasn't going to register & pay without being somewhat sure the race would be run.  Now I guess I'll hope that weather is warmer than usual in January for our local free but usually competitive half, which I've never run.  (The local running club has held five somewhat-socially-distanced 5K-10K races since June without incident, so I'm pretty sure this one will take place.)  Before then, I'll plan to run a 5K in November and possibly a nighttime 5K on Halloween.

      Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

      '24 Goals: consistency, age-graded PRs, half < 1:32

Watson - have fun and good luck in Rotorua.  Unsurprisingly the weather forecast looks pretty good, since I am not racing.

          2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

James - sorry your race is cancelled.

American people - with all your official races being cancelled, could you improvise races?  Find local runners nearby of a similar speed and do a 5-10km race?  If you get 10 people y I u could probably have a good race.

            PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

            2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

I did that 7:07 pace 10K tempo two days before I ran the half-marathon.  I do wonder if that took a bit of time out of me but my legs felt good and that's why I ended up deciding to run the half while already 4 miles in.  I had originally only intended to run about 11 miles that day.

              Personal Records:

5K - 20:07 ran in September 2021 (The second half split during the 10K run listed below.)

              10K - 41:10 ran in September 2021

              8 miles - 56:15 ran in November 2021

Half Marathon - 1:39:06 ran in September 2020

I think a 10k tempo is only a good indicator if you are running at least 50 mpw.

Watson good luck, did you fly up to Rotorua?

Parkrun for me tomorrow. Good forecast light winds. Its warming up here but start is at 8am so should be ok.

2 days before!  I think it should be at least 10 days before.  Once you refine your training a bit (and have a taper), you have tons of improvement in you.  Wouldn't surprise me if you crack 90 mins within 6 months!

That sounds like fun, but at least in my case it's not really an option.  There are very few local people close enough to my speed for me to run with in races (there are some who are faster), and some of them are high schoolers who might run with me at one race and then be much faster the next time I see them in six months or a year.  Also, we've had five shorter races - three 5Ks, a 5-miler, and a 10K - since June.  It's just the halfs and fulls that have been cancelled everywhere within driving distance.  Even in halfs I often don't have anyone to run with; the long-term solution to that will be one of the two big races in Atlanta when they come back, but everything in downtown Atlanta is so hilly that I want to break 1:30 elsewhere first.

That's 4 races now that I would have raced (but for cancellations/postponements) where the weather has been perfect.

Odds looking good on the weather being crap for me in Masterton.  At least if it's windy, it's a loop course so it'll even out.
