Good luck, Mark, Watson, & Flavio!

I had a good workout last Sunday but, as I mentioned, the rest of the week was less good.  Did 5x800 again, this time with 1:45 rest (300m jog) rather than 2:45 (100m walk/300m jog) two weeks ago.  Averaged only 3 seconds slower per rep with less rest, and only faded a little in the last two reps.  My right upper hamstring & glute, which had been a little sore the previous week, hurt too much when I started out on Monday, so I took Monday off, swam Tuesday, and took Wednesday off.  Thursday and Friday I ran 7+ miles slowly.  The hamstring & glute were sore, and I didn’t feel like it would be safe to go any faster, but I also felt like I wasn’t aggravating anything at that pace.  When I had this issue in 2018, I eventually came back by doing only easy miles and running through mild, steady soreness, which gradually went away.  It hasn’t hurt as badly this time, so I hope I can get over it reasonably soon. The local January half was cancelled, so it’s not like I have any goal races to think about until March.

    Sun - 5.8 track miles including 5x800 w 1:45 jog rest (300m) @~3:04/rep, faded a little

Mon - tried to run, but upper hamstring & glute hurt too much - off day

Tues - 43 minutes swimming, felt stronger

Weds - off taking son to look at a university

Thurs - 7.7 very easy, hamstring sore but not getting worse

Fri - 7.6 very easy in rain, hamstring about the same

    Sat - 49 minutes swimming

Total - 21.1 miles, lowest week of the year

    12/26/52-week averages - 38/41/39 mpw

    Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

Good job on the 800s James. That jog recovery looks about right. I usually do 400m or about 2 mins but that's just a carry over from when I do 1000s.

I managed to almost hit my 80km week target.

A sluggish longrun today due to vo2max workout yesterday.

I averaged 3.32/km for the 5 x 1km but had some tailwind for about 3 of them.

2:41:41 official. Overall pretty happy even though I was

slightly off the moose mug. A 16 minute PB is still great!

Faded into the wind the last few km, turning into it at the 35km mark for the last 7km home is exactly what you don’t want but got it done. Nice running and a fun course. I’ll do an RR probably tomorrow or Tuesday, time to hang with the family now!

Thanks. Doing well. I'm on paternity leave (using my earned vacation time) so I have the two kids all day and I'm up with my baby girl at night for her feedings. So I get about 5-6 hours of sleep and running 80-90 a week so I'm to toasted for thr forums. I usually try to read a bit but while I'm feeding her a bottle at 1 or 4 am.  I figured my log is open if anyone wants to check out if I'm running. ;-)

Watson/Mark sounds like a tough finish. I wondered if that wind would get up.

Watson nice job you are easy sub 1.30 on a nicer day and course.

Mark are you still running Mt. Maunganui half in November?

Steve can you add a race for me November 1st

              Tauranga city to surf 11km.

Great job Mark and Watson. It looked like a horrendous last 7km, a literal uphill battle.

Mark - make sure to celebrate even though perhaps it's not what you hoped. You never know what the future holds.

Watson - that was a great race and puts you on the right track. It's what matter, with your consistency in training you'll be looking at a PR in just a few months. But overall I hope you enjoyed being out there.

Flávio - it was an uphill and upwind battle!

That’s marathon retirement for me though. Maybe I’ll have another crack at that moose mug in 7 or 8 years. But I haven’t enjoyed the training and I sure as hell didn’t enjoy the race - although I’ll take the result. Enjoying running is too important to me; I figured three years ago I was more suited to 10km’s and HM’s and today has probably confirmed that. Plus they’re a lot lower risk in the COVID world right now.

(and before anyone says ‘don’t make that decision now, I made it 3 weeks ago!)

Are you running Mount Maunganui still ?

Yeah she looked strong at the finish.

Definitely running Mt Maunganui (assuming I haven’t broken anything today). Weird to think it’ll be my first HM of the year given how many I’ve run in the past.

Congrats to the racers. Looking forward to the reports! Thanks for the pictures Mark, those were great. You didnt really look spent crossing the finish; did you leave some in the tank? And...who took the pic of your hairy legs in those pink shoes, without the upper body?

From what I can see, it looks like the marathon was won by Steve Gawn though, the 50 year old who came in 7th. On an age on-leveled basis he was faster than the kid who came in first (and Mark too). Piwi pointed out the girl but I think Steve's performance is even more remarkable.

Good to finally see some racing again, which means we are on a good track back to normalcy.
