Keen - glad to hear things are turning around. Weird sock thing did help for the first week. I forgot to wear it one night and noticed my foot was the same in the morning, so I think I'm past the "I cant walk when I get out of bed" phase, which is a good sign!

NB shoes - does look like that shoe is being discontinued, couldn't find it on their site. Oh well, sounded perfect.

I'm glad someone else asked about the jelly tip. Sounds like something Kiwi men use as a pickup line.

My point with the whole HR thing is just that what gives out on us may indicate what our best distance is.   I think that if you are breathing totally normally at the end of a marathon but limited by your legs, it's an indication that either something went wrong or the distance is not your specialty.   The breathing normally but my legs have died thing has only happened to me in my bad marathons.   My best marathons have felt like 5Ks at the end.

This makes a lot of sense to me.  The HM and 10k races I've nailed, pretty much everything hurt at the end - I knew I'd pushed everything to the limit.

Herding cats, in a house with stairs, while on crutches, is its own special joy.

Oh boy, that sounds like some kind of fun.

Jmac have a look at Beacon 3s 6mm drop light and minimal with adequate cushion for daily runs.

My feeling at the end of a 5k is very different to a marathon. My lungs are bursting out of my chest. This is the same but on slightly lesser levels as I step up through 10k to half marathon. Marathons were just a total fatiguing of my legs.

I never monitored heart rate back then so not sure what that would have read.

I'm probably more suited like Mark to 5k to half. I like running 80km per week but struggle 100kms up

Steve - Never give em just the tip.

I ordered the Evare's even though I couldn't find much in the way of reviews, I like other fresh foam products and the price is right so I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

The Beacons have always got crazy good reviews, I should grab a pair soon, especially if I can find some V2s on the cheap.

Now that I have extra shoes on my rack, I've successfully run on trails the 3 of the last 4 days lol. I actually retired a pair of trail shoes last year so I'm shopping for replacements if anyone has a suggestions. I don't need a rock plate as mostly I deal with tree roots, crabapples and elevation changes more than rocky terrain. I really like my NB Nitrel V3s but I've found that trail shoes tend to expire on me around 350 miles so I have to be more proactive in getting that replacement pair.

          1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 45:24 (2017), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Mary - 3:37:17 (2018)

Zebano I've never used trail shoes but just use old road shoes. Most trails I run are not too bad anyway.

What are the Nike Wildhorse like ?

I was upgrading a guys security system today and noticed a lot of old marathon race singlets hanging up in the garage.

They were the old cotton ones from the 1980s.

Had a good talk to him about marathons and running.

Piwi the older guys at my club have a bunch of news clippings and pictures of events and runners from the 60s and 70s.  Some of the nostalgia stuff is really cool.  It's amazing the times that some of those runners threw down with very little of the science and technology available to us now in relation to nutrition, biometrics and carbon fibre plates!

With my upper hamstring & glute still sore, I took it easy again this week.  Spent the first two days in the hospital with my son after his appendectomy (he’s at home now & recovering), then did four easy runs & a good swim.  The amount of soreness was about the same on each run, but my pace got closer to normal each time.  Today would’ve been a great day for a long run - temperatures in the high 60s, low humidity, enough of a breeze to make it cool in the shade but enough sun to make it pleasantly warm otherwise.  Watching a lot of baseball this week, as Atlanta has advanced farther than they have in my son's lifetime.

Sun/Mon - off, in hospital with son

Tues - 7.6 miles easy & very, very slow

                            Weds - 7.6 easy & very slow

                            Thurs - 7.7 easy & slow

                            Fri - 49 minutes swimming

                            Sat - 7.7 easy

                            Total - 30.6 miles

                            12/26/52-week averages - 37/41/39 mpw

                            Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (April '20)

Revised 2020 Goals:  40+ mpw (getting there), 5K<19:30 (not yet); Mile<5:40 (done), no injuries

James - hope your son is doing well. I had my appendix taken out by accident a few years ago... it actually turned out to be campylobacter that they misdiagnosed as appendicitis, on the bright side I never have to worry about getting appendicitis.

Me - lightest week since March 2018, but hey that's what marathon recovery weeks are for!!  Body gradually improved over the week, just going to run on feel a bit next week, hopefully some workouts later in the week.
