Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2019 (Read 641 times)

RIP Milkman

    Happy new year everybody!

As is tradition for the new thread leader, I must thank the previous thread leader, Mark. He did a great job not only running the thread, but also having a kick ass year in 2018. I am happy to take over the reigns from him. As stated in last year’s thread, I plan on being a very benevolant dictator leader.

For those of you that are lurking, now is the time to join! This group is very friendly with one another, and we always love having new people join. You will find that we quickly embrace newcomers if they are positive contributors to the thread. We had many new folks join up in the last year.

Here are the basic rules for the thread, mostly copied from last year:

    1. All welcome!! This thread is for anyone AIMING to run a sub-1:30 half marathon in 2019. It’s also for anyone racing other distances below marathon that are looking for a great community to be with. You might be a bit faster, you might be a bit slower, but if that's your goal, this is the thread for you.
    2. Start with an introduction... name, age, gender, location, running history and goals, favourite races, etc.
    3. We strongly encourage everyone to post their weekly training, it can lead to some very helpful discussions and insights.
    4. If you have an upcoming race, let me know and I will add it to the table below.  Note that we expect posters to post weekly mileage for 3 weeks before adding races (the regulars - you know who you are - are exempt), this is to encourage people to get involved in the discussion.
    5. We also highly encourage you to get involved with other people. If you only dump your weeklies and ask questions about yourself, you won’t get as much support. This is like give a penny, take a penny. Nobody likes people who only take a penny.
    6. Stick around - even if you're injured or your motivation is low. We all go through these spells (except super humans like Mark) and it’s good for people to know how you’re doing.
    7. Banter and bad jokes are required this year. Piwi and Flavio currently are our presidents of Clown University , but it’s time that they get dethroned. MJ has quickly ascended the ranks and probably is our Vice President.
    8. Do not sandbag your goals. 2019's theme is BOTT.
    9. You can post in KM if you'd like, or you can talk about New Zealand issues if you'd like, but you cannot do both. Choose wisely.

There is also a Strava club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/sub90HM

The link below can help outputting weekly summaries, if you use Strava. http://rwol-weekly.appspot.com/

    Memorable Quotes:

PiwiKiwi:  OK enough Piwi man love in here you are making my butt cheeks squeeze together which actually may help my running strength

JMac: When you're completely healthy, you feel like you're invincible and you'll never get injured again. When you're injured, you wonder if you'll ever be healthy again.

Mark: I initially read this as ‘massage on all my nipples’. Then the ROFLcopter crashed into the LOLcano.

Brent: I'm back from a two week hiatus in posting. I was on vacation for a week and a half and then had a half week of recovering from being on vacation.

Flavio: ah this board never disappoints, middle aged men sharing stories about what they dream and about sticking needles in their butts

Piwi: My wife makes me take copious amounts of vitamins c tablets when I get sick. I worry that I will take on an orange glow like Donald Trump

Mark, 37, from Auckland, New Zealand.  Married with one almost-2 year old daughter.  Let me be the first to welcome the reign of our new overlord.  The king is dead, long live the king!

Not quite as superhuman as JMac is talking me up to be but 2018 definitely saw an optimum combination of hard work and good luck for me on the running front, resulting in PRs at every distance except the full marathon (which I didn't run).  I don't run quite as much mileage as some, typically averaging ~80km/week, but for me consistency and quality have been the big things, with typically two workouts a week and occasionally three if I'm feeling good.

I'm a longtime lingerer on this thread in its various forms, and have got a lot of help here so I'm always keen to share ideas and help others out too.

        In 2019, I have 4 goals:

        1. Have fun
        2. Don't get injured
        3. Do some new races
        4. Beat my half marathon PB

The first three are the same goals I set every year, but (4) might be a bit trickier.  There are a few races on the cards for it, the first being Waterfront Half Marathon in April, albeit winter conditions generally suit me better.

        Mileage history:

2016: 2,686km (slightly understated due to some uncalibrated treadmill mileage)

        2017: 3,612km

        2018: 3,613km

Good luck to everyone in 2019!

JMac - thanks for the thread.  We need an intro about you too!

Keen and Mark - welcome back.

          Quick intro

          - 41 years old male.

          - married, two girls aged 7 and 11

          - I live in greater Wellington, New Zealand

          - First name is Chris

Been running since 2011. Been reasonably consistent apart from a few injuries, up to and including 2016.  2017 and 2018 have been rather inconsistent, mainly due to life commitments.

2015 and 2016 were very good training years. Lots of 60-60 mile weeks, with a few 70-79 mile weeks.

I've ran around a dozen halfs. My best time was 1:26:16, coming in September 2016. In June 2015, I went sub 1:30 for the first time after several 1:31 races.

Have ran two marathons, the first in June 2015. Paced poorly and ran 3:09, with a 1:30/1:39 split, Could have managed 3:06 that day with better pacing.

October 2017 I ran my second marathon. I'd had a moderately good 3 months training up to then, but had a left hip and left knee injury. I was originally aiming for sub 3, but I ditched that aim due to the injury (and not quite enough volume) and ran 3:16.

2017 and 2018 were very disrupted training years. Due to professional training and exams, selling a house, and also building a new house.  House build is complete - except decking, soil, grass etc., so 2019 is about consistency for me.I

I only raced three half's in 2018.  Being a March half (very short, more like 20km) in about 1:33 - very hot conditions, slow course and I'd drank quite a bit the day before.

The second was in June, at the Christchurch half.  I just went sub 90.  It was a well run race and was probably about as good as I could expect.

The final half was in August, Hutt 5 Bridges which is a deceptively slow course (probably 2 minutes slower than Christchurch).  I was aiming 1:25, whereas I should have aimed 1:27.  I had a bit of disaster, missing the start, which I then wrongly ran too fast at the start, which is always bad for me.  I went 1:30 with change - although as I started late, Strava has me as 1:29:something.  I was in my best shape of the year in August (based on good training paces) so this was a bit disappointing.

My volume over the last four years is:

          2018: 2350km / 1461 miles

          2017: 2720 km / 1690 miles

          2016: 3313 km / 2059 miles

          2015: 4022 miles / 2500 miles

So volume has been dropping since 2015! I only managed 16 weeks of 40+ miles.

          My 2019 aims are:

          - Have 40 weeks of 40+ miles.

          - The above weeks to include 2 runs of some quality.

          - To race far more regularly. 2017 I only raced two times, and 2018 I only raced 3 times.

I am planning to race a 5km next Tuesday.  Mainly to actually race more often, and to gauge where I'm at.  My first half of the year is likely to be June (either Christchurch or Wellington).  I'll likely run the 5 Bridges half again in August (I'll adjust my aim by 2 minutes for the slow course).  And I'll likely race the Pelorus Trust Half in November (where I got my half PR).  There'll be the odd other 5-10k race done too.

          PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

          40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

          2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

          2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

Jmac thanks for starting this kiwi only thread

            Mark, Watson gidday mate.

I'm Andrew 50 yrs married 4 kids living in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand.

Been running  since 2010. My first half was a 1.35 and I've run about 9 more between 1.20 and 1.27.

2 marathons 2.59 and 2.54. I haven't been consistent in my training since 2014 and have not done many races since then.

I have booked a marathon in Brighton UK in April and I'm madly trying to get back to previous form but my body is not happy with that so not sure where I can get too by April.

I am Fil aka MJ, m 38, I like running, ladies and bad jokes. I grew up in Germany, so firm "leadership" isnt something compeltely unknown to me Wink I live in Switzerland now, not because I am rich, but because I clean up after them. They havent thought of building a wall yet.

Runningwise, I started to run while studying for a work certificate in finance that was pretty tough - and it helped me to take a break and stay healthy during the tough times. That was from 2013-2016 and in 2017 I started to run with a JD HM plan and ran my first HM in 1:54h. I thought I could get really close to 90 minutes in 2018 but that didnt happen, due to two injuries that caused me to pause for roughly three months (Jan, Feb & June). And some pretty hefty stomach issues during my second half marathon breaking 100 attempt.

And then my former employer went bust and I had to start at a new firm in October, leaving very little time to running consistently (registered tm by mark).

I think I will be able to run sub 100 in  2019 - I am building a base at the moment and have a great running community at work. There are at least three pretty fast runners, with one being close to Jmac & Mark's level, and another pretty close to that. So I hope they will continue to let me run with them on their easy days and that should do the trick Smile

              My goals for 2019 are:

              • Breaking 100minutes
              • Stay healthy and
              • Run >2500km

Piwi - I'm glad to be here amongst the tidy Kiwis instead of those slackers the Brazilians.

MJ - Confess man, you're only in Switzerland for the women and the high salary in CHC (Swiss Cheese).

Jmac - we need to have your intro too. I want to learn all about dew points.

It's great to see that Watson, Mark and Keen have made over to the new thread.

I'm Flavio, 38, not married on paper but with my girlfriend for 13 years now, no kids by choice.

I live in Porto Alegre, in the South of Brazil. I have been raised in a strong community of Italian immigrants though and that's the stereotype I follow most closely. Meaning I like Polenta, cheesy 60's romantic songs and wine.

I've started running back in 2009 with a few years of very low training. Back in 2013 I found this forum (back in the RW's times) and then I started training a bit more seriously.

I have hit a good spot 3 years ago where I managed to lower my weight to 81kg and ran most of my PRs in those months between march 2015 and march 2016. After that I gained a lot of weight and now I don't run anymore, I just roll due to my round shape.

In 2018 I did a lot of functional training which helped me remain mostly injury free though the average mileage was only 50km/week.

                2019 objectives:

1 - lose weight - I'm currently a ball of fat at over 20% body fat percentage. I'm throwing the kitchen sink at this problem but a combination of bad genetics and a few times where I lose hope and simply go rogue for a week diet wise mean that I've been gaining about 1kg per month even though I've been spending an average of 600 calories per day with running.

2 - hire a running coach - I've learned most of what I know by doing the wrong thing. I hope that a coach can help me modularize my training so that I can actually find some progress and avoid injuries.

Hi, glad to be here since the beginning this year. Thanks JMac for taking up the role of benevolent dictator leader.

I am the actual Italian here, although I have been for the last 10 years in Northern Ireland, a place in the world that Flavio had the luck of visiting and didn't like much (at least for running...) and I cannot say anything against it. It is dump and cold for most part of the year, and it is currently dark and grey most of the time, but the landscape is beautiful and life is good, so we decided to stay.

Quick intro: I am Marco, 35 years old, male, married, two kids, a boy and a girl, both aged 7 (twins!!!).

I used to be a proper runner in my teens. My favourite races were the 800 mt. (PR at 2'06'' in 2003) and the 1,500 (PR at 4'22'' in 2003). When I started university I realised that running would not give me a salary, and that I really needed to focus on my future if I wanted to change my life around. So I stopped running, got a couple of university degrees in Italy and a PhD in Northern Ireland. I have been an academic for a while and then moved into consultancy 2/3 years ago. I started running again in 2013 after about 10 years of stop and I decided to run long distances. My first HM was not very well prepared and I finished in 1h 52'. Last year I managed to run a bit more consistently and train with some quality and achieved 1h30' (09'   ... I know... ) in the HM and 40' 16'' (again I know!!!) in the 10K.

Unfortunately, running is not all I do. I have a family which I love and I'd like to enjoy my young kids as much as i can (and my wife does not like running) and a fairly demanding job which gets me on a plane at least once a month and often across the Atlantic. Don't get me wrong I love my job and it gives me enough to live well, but consistency is a very difficult thing to achieve with this type of job...

                  Since 2013 I ran 8 HM, 4 full marathons and 1 10 K.

                  My 2019 aims are:

                  - Have 40 weeks of 40+ miles (I am going to still this from Watson, I hope you don't mind... if you do, I will change it to 41 miles).

                  - Have fun and stay as much injure free as I can

                  - Run a full marathon (I have run 4, but never finished well, I always had problems that got me walking/running for 2 to 6 miles)

                  - Possibly run the FM in less than 3h 30'

                  - Actually get under 40' and under 90' in 10 K and HM respectively.

I am looking into hire a running coach, but I have no idea were to start and how much would it cost

Good luck to everyone in 2019!

                  PRs since re-started in 2013:

HM: 1:30:09 (Belfast city Half Marathon, September-18) | FM: 3:25:05 (official chip time Belfast city Marathon, May-19, marathon was 0.3/4 longer, original time 3:27:20 for 26.5/6...)

                    Cobra Commander Keen

Kyle, 34, Oklahoma, USA. Married, 3 daughters (1, 4, 7). Adult onset runner, started in July 2015. Returning Mileage King, who will suffer no pretenders to the crown.

2018 was largely a banner year for me, particularly from a training perspective. Zero injuries, lots more volume than before, and my first seasons following actual training plans. PRs in all the distances, including a big one in the marathon (fine, so I hadn't raced one in 1.5 years and was due...). The only blight upon the year was my motivation tanking after the marathon, then getting sick multiple times just as that was coming back. The last bug has turned into a bronchial/sinus infection, so I'm not running until it and the antibiotics are out of my system. On the plus side, being sick for three weeks and having little/no appetite has left me 2-3 pounds lighter than before! That's one way to beat that holiday weight gain.

All the down time after my last marathon leaves my initial (performance based) plans for the spring in limbo, so I'll probably end up just trying to work my way back and see where my fitness ends up. I have two marathons planned for spring (Chisholm Trail and OKC Memorial), which may both end up mostly being for fun, rather than for speed. Maybe one of my running buddies could use a pacer.

Summer/fall are way too far off to really plan for, but the one certainty there is that I want to run the Wurst Race HM again - I've run it (and finished in second place!) all three years of the race so far, so I'd like to continue the run streak and finally win the blasted thing.

Goals for 2019? At this point it's going to be to run more miles than before while staying healthy - no time goals yet.

                      RIP Milkman

Great job on the bios everyone. I have to say, even though I know most of you, it's always good to get a refresher of where we all came from (along with some good jokes in there from many of you).

                        Here's my bio:

Male, aged 32, living in NYC with my wife. No kiddos yet, but we do have one doggo. Ran in high school with worse times than I have now, even at the 5K, so I wasn't very good. Tried training for one half marathon in 2013, which I ran a 1:43 in and proceeded to nearly pass out at the end of the race. I needed a volunteer to get me to a place to sit down.

After that terrible race, I took another year off but got back into things more seriously in 2014 when I decided I wanted to train for a marathon. This required me to run a bunch of smaller races as part of NYCM's 9+1 program, which guarantees entry into the race if you run 9 NYRR races the prior year.

I ran my first marathon in 3:12 in 2015. I told myself I would only run one of them because the training seemed so awful, but at the bar that night celebrating the race, I decided I was going to do another 9+1 qualification. After that, I was hooked to running in general.

Here is my mileage history, which I think is a good idea (thanks Watson).

                        2015(est.): 1500

                        2016: 1281

                        2017: 1975

                        2018: 2123

I've been setting new PRs each year (the beauty of slowly increasing your mileage I guess). This past year was another great year for me, setting new PRs in every single distance except the half marathon, which I didn't race at all. A bit ironic given that's what this forum is about, but I will focus more on it this year!

Unfortunately I'm starting up 2019 just like I did 2018: on the disabled list with a foot/ankle issue. Once I get over this, my main goals for 2019 are to stay healthy and hopefully set some new PRs across all distances!

Re kids and training - kids do effect time for training.  My kids getting bigger has meant more activities which eats into training time.

Flavio and Piwi - you both need to consider how much volume and intensity you can manage that's optimal.  It has been a while since you've both hit 60+ miles.

Keen - you have a good chance of dropping your half time to 1:25 or better this year.

                          PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

                          40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

                          2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

                          2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

                          RIP Milkman

I'm in a weird spot with my PTT. It's definitely not pain free, but the swelling is all gone and it's much less tender. I hate being in this place where I can't tell if I should start up running again. I know that if I go out, there will be pain for at least the beginning of the run. I also know that if I waited until I have exactly zero pain to start the run, I may be on the shelf for another 4 weeks. Of course, I've had some experience with other injuries that I was able to run through, like my metatarsalgia, which is giving me maybe false hope that I can run through this too given the level it has gotten to.

Any advice? Maybe Piwi with his calf recently? Did you wait until zero pain while running? I'm usually good with this stuff of telling when I can run again, but I don't want to be so conservative here given it's time to really get going for Boston.

Watson - Thanks for the vote of confidence. I do think I'll have an honest shot at near 1:25 with a favorable course and weather. I think ~1:26 would have been in the cards last April had that race not been on one of the warmest days of the year to that point.

I echo the sentiment about kids cutting into training time. Most of the year I have to be back from a morning run in time to help get the older two ready for school, and DD1 plays soccer (DD2 may play this season) which has historically taken place on Saturday mornings - goodbye group long runs.

JMac - How's the metatarsalgia doing? Being off your feet a little dealing with the PTT could help with that as well, if needed.
Personally, I don't like running on something if there's pain. "Intense discomfort" is another thing entirely, though...

                              My mileage progression:

                              2015: 558 mi / 898 km (Started in July)
                              2016: 1,912 / 3,077
                              2017: 2,242 / 3,608
                              2018: 2,931 / 4,716

                              5k: 17:58 11/22 │ 10k: 37:55 9/21 │ HM: 1:23:22 4/22 │ M: 2:56:05 12/22

JMac - I was able to run through PTT (with some taping) but it was very mild.

Keen - I agree with Watson re your HM potential particularly if you can keep that mileage up. You’d have to think a sub-3 FM would be on the cards at some point too.
