RIP Milkman

keen - I actually laughed when I read your comment about long runs because I had the same experience last week. I was consistently doing 10-11 mile easy runs without water pretty easily, but my long runs I feel cooked by mile 8. Makes no sense. And no...when I retire from running, it'll be for good. The number one thing I like about running is the competitive aspect. Once I can't PR anymore, I see myself moving to a "healthier" version of exercising, because I can't imagine running 70+ MPW is exactly the healthiest way to be doing this stuff. Probably follow more of the kiwi path, with just some light jogging while doing other stuff to maintain (actually build?) strength.

JMac - It's nice to know I'm not the only one with that issue. I literally sat on the side of the road for a bit at one point trying to figure out how in the same conditions I can feel so good running so much faster and without water, but then be cooked halfway through a LR with plenty of access to water.
So only absolute PRs for you? No chasing age-graded ones?

Keen - impressive week and I would certainly not claim to be challenging you for the thread mileage crown.  I think what makes it even more impressive is that you're almost 10% ahead of JMac and I - and I'm pretty sure that included some pretty low weeks around the start of the year too!

Me - the old dilemma of a new shoe model.  I balked initially when I saw the Saucony Freedom ISO 2 was almost 8% (!!) heavier than the Freedom ISO which has been my staple easy/long run shoe for a couple of years now.  Anyway I tried them out this morning and the extra weight isn't noticeable at all.  They still have that awesome super-bouncy feel straight out of the box, and the upper feels a lot more stable which was one of the few shortcomings of the original Freedom's.

I need to stock up soon and I was tossing up whether to hunt down end-of-line Freedom 1's or opt for 2's if I can get them at a decent price - suspect it'll be the latter.

Keen - I imagine I would go after that stuff but after a big break, maybe when I'm 40+.

Mark - I'm surprised weight matters for you on easy/long runs. I don't even consider that stuff for non-racing shoes. If anything, I'd be worried if they were too light since they provide less support/cushion.

Normally it doesn't but I had one bad experience with the Mizuno Wave Inspire (when the model changed from 11 -> 12) where they went from perfectly good to 'oh my god what are these bricks on my feet'.  I'm not worried about weight for easy/long run shoes unless they're clunky / feel heavy if that makes sense.

                Hey all-

I was just getting back in shape after not running for 3 years.  Was planning on not running anything longer until next year but i just signed up for a 1/2 marathon in August near the family cabin since I'll be up there that weekend anyway.

                  800 - 2:40 - 3:20 pace -> mile pace

Mark - I had a similar issue with the Altra Ones getting progressively narrower after every new version. As they try to squeeze more customers from the market, they squeeze me out

me - A season best in the 1500m today with 5:16. One second faster than the time trial at the beginning of the training block. I'll take it.

I had some heavy legs from strength training yesterday, so I'm very happy with the result.

dp - welcome aboard, can you give a bit more of your running history? Please see the first couple of pages for an idea.

Flavio - I think you have a sub 5:00 in you for the 1500.

Me - SI ligament/joint pain is stable, which is good, but definitely is not 100%. It was completely fine after the race, but it seemed to flare up after my easy run Sunday. Will monitor it. Keeping it easy through today just to make sure.

                      5 months til Masters

A little bit more about me: My name is Dan.

I played multiple sports year round until college.  I just ran XC and Track for a small DIII University in northern MN (St. John's University, Collegeville, MN) 2003-07 and was OK but not great in terms of actual runners.

I have run a 2:53ish marathon before spraining my knee badly after dodging a car on the road in 2013.  I couldn't run for a few months, and got out of running on the whole as i was working 2 jobs and about 70 hours a week.  I've started running a few time since then, but then work and life got busy and would fall away again.  3 years ago we bought a house in Minneapolis, and then had our son a year later.  I got up to 235 lbs and decided if i want to see my son (now 2) graduate from High School at the rate i was putting on weight i needed to get running again. (Cause God knows i wasn't going to stop inhaling food).  I am down to 170-175 lbs range and have been running daily since Jan 1st.  I am running with my local track club made up of fellow SJU alumni.  There is a local team road racing circuit that we participate in, so I'm getting a race in every 5 weeks or so, but mostly i run at about 85% and taking them as a workout.  I'm mostly focusing on getting in shape and not getting injured or sick.  I run at nights after we get our son to sleep so i'm out the door usually about 8 and home between 9 and 10 pm.  I have a vizsla (think Clifford the big red dog, but really only 40 lbs) who runs with me.  I think i can likely run an 18 minute 5k right now, but if i did i would fall over exhausted and likely need to limp around for 4 days after.  So signed up for the 1/2 in august because it is at my cabin and it is the route i run every time i'm up there (once around the lake) to keep me getting my mileage up.  My real race is the Twin Cities 10 mile (part of the Medtronic Twin Cities marathon) in October as part of the team circuit where I hope to get close to 60 min.  I'm training through races right now and not really tapering before any but i'll need to start getting more distance and speed workouts in now that I have a few months of running in.

Next year i plan on running Grandma's and Twin Cities marathons and hope to be around 2:40 which is all to say 2019 is mostly about laying a solid base to i can get up to some 90-100 mile weeks without injury.

I'm 35. I work at a county gov't running the homeless and low income housing programs which is the field i have been in for the last decade more or less.

DP - Thanks for the info. Hopefully you stick around!  We've had at least 5 people "join" this year to only disappear again for good. You'll find if you stick around, you will get a lot of support in this group. As for the Vizla, that is a great running dog to have, perhaps one of the best! My dog likes running for about a mile, and then wants to be off her leash and explore at her own pace, so it's frustrating.

I'll stick around as now I have time to run. Side note on vizsla....mine is 5 y.o. and she is an extreme velcro dog. She never goes more than 5 yards from us (especially our son) so we locked out that once I get on to the river path in Minneapolis I can let her go free and she'll run right with me.  Down side....she will get excited and bark for about 4 miles of a 10 mile run which can be a bit....much.
