Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2019 (Read 641 times)

Mark yeah I was hoping no one would be desperate enough to take just one shoe.

We tease the Americans about how fat they are but the rest of the worlds countries that aren't poor are getting fatter.

NZ is right up there in fatness

And yes 100 years ago we would all be working manual jobs and eating basic foods.

Jmac I think I read a while back that the average elite marathoner Male was about 5'7.

There are exceptions especially with the European runners. Rupp, The Robertsons,  etc although they will still be around that 60 kg mark.

When you look at good runners 2.20 to 2.40 marathoners there is quite a variety of frames on them.

Sprinters vary too with Bolt 6ft5 and Shelly Anne Fraser Price at 5.0ft.

Piwi - it's funny you mention that, I ran a good part of the Christchurch half marathon (before the half and full courses split) with a group of runners who all ended up around the 2:30 mark for the full.  There was a real mix - tall guys, short guys, skinny guys and one guy who was pretty muscular.

Mark yeah I often notice in watching marathons on tv, the men running with the elite women are of all shapes and styles of running.

Just got back from a jog round my local Papamoa waterways. Saw a guy on a bike chucking a chilli bin and all his booze bottles into the waterways. I yelled out at him and he told me to eff off. I was with my son so we ran back to the nearest bridge and crossed over to where he was. Meanwhile he had taken off. We got the chilli bin out at least. What a loser.

        RIP Milkman

Kiwi - I’m 5’9” and 140 pounds (how many kiwi birds is that? I think that’s how you guys measure weight.) I’m definitely thin, but if I was even going to be sub-elite, I’d probably have to weigh 130 pounds. I don’t think I’d ever want to be that thin, nor do I think I could get below 135 without starving myself and seeing significant performance issues.

On your littering issue - man, I HATE littering. My biggest issue in NYC is that people will run in the park and just throw their Gu packs on the ground during training. This isn’t a race, and worst off, I sometimes find these Gu packs within 100 meters (you’re welcome for the conversion) of a trash can. If I ever saw someone throwing a gu pack on the ground while I was running, I’ve actually thought that I would pick it up and hand it back to them and say “excuse me, you dropped this.” It’s just so lazy.

Random guy who threw his time in here - please post more often! We love having new folks and we’re a welcoming group. Please join us.

ETA - 800s to me seem like no man’s land. They’re not short enough for strength work, which 200s/400s accomplish, and not long enough for V02 max, which are more 1K or 1200 repeats. I know Flavio said long rest, but even that, still not sure. Often we run half our goal distance at goal pace, but those are often HMP or MP, which are about learning how hard our goal pace. Maybe 800s accomplish that for mile pace, but I feel you can get the same training at 400 meter pace and be able to get in many more reps. Often you do half distance at longer race distance (eg 13.1 at MP), but that’s because MP requires you to understand what it means to run that long at a pace that feels fast but controlled. I’m not sure 800 at mile pace ever feels like that. Just a thought.

So my chip time in the 5k was 18:15 and my gun time was 18:17. Got sucked in to a 5:20 first mile so the last mile was pretty rough.  Talked with the guys on the team and the average distance was 3.18 on Garmin's....so the course was long. Guessing 3.15 at best. It was a non USATF certified course.  It was 84 degrees out but not too humid which was nice.  Was hoping realistically for 18:20 so I was pleased. Looks good for future races, ...the long jog home in flats suuuuuuuucked...so my knees are wrapped in ice at the moment.  I headed put before the te results...so I'll find out tomorrow. We had 5  guys under 16 min which was good. 14:34 won by a guy from another team.  Going to bed. Night all!

I should also mention that I have a small race on Saturday.  It's 3.2-3.3km in a relay.  It's just our club relay, it's handicapped times and a mix of kids and adults in each team.  Teams run 0.9km (younger kids), plus 2.5km (older kids) and 3.2-3.3km (adults).  The course is not the quickest, but would like sub 13.

Schumacher congrats that's really fast and on a long course and hot day. 14.34 crikey that's decent in a local race.

Jmac yeah I was feeling pretty angered and I had my 21 year old with me so a bit braver than normal. Unfortunately did not have my phone. There's always a risk confronting low lifes like these, but not many people carry guns here which is slightly reassuring

Watson good luck on Saturday. At first I read that as 3.2 miles and you wanted sub 13

Littering - At first I read JMac's post about Gu wrappers and people running the 100m.  Then I realized I read that horribly wrong.  But sucks when people take nice places and turn them into hell holes.  It's really not that hard.  I run on the side of the road quite often and just amazing to see the amount of soda cans out there. Not sure who's first thought is to throw their can out the window when you're done with it...

Workout yesterday was 16 x 200m (200m jog)  with a VDOT goal of 40's and I couldn't have asked for a better result.  All splits were between 37-40 (mostly 39 or 40) and the 200m jog were consistently around 62 sec. so wasn't overdoing the recovery.  Got a mile WU and a mile CD.  CD was much slower when my 9 year old son joined in but never a better training partner and always good Minecraft conversation.

On the second round of 800 mg Ibuprofen today...it is barely noon...so tonight's run should be fun.

Muscles are tired, but the good kind of tired like after a nice workout.  My knees are still pretty rough.  I think I would have been fine if I hadn't run home in the asics hyperspeeds and had trainers with me.  But getting to the race late, I didn't have time to drop off my shoes before running the point to point so I just hopped out the car (my wife dropped me off and then took my son home to bed...race started at 7:30pm and my 2 y.o.'s bedtime is 7) with my flats on.

One of the guys certified to measure courses I know took his calibrated bike to measure the course.  He did it both directions twice taking the shortest possible path and averaged 3.147 miles.  So on a legit course I would have been around 18:00, but no credit til I have the clock to back it up.

Piwi they are pretty minimal. Other issue was the run home was all rolling hills so a decent amount of downhills were I land a bit harder on the heal and my knees took the pounding to absorb my weight. If I wasn't as tired I would have had better form and not have beat them up so much. There is no swelling or anything...I can just feel stiffness and soreness inside the knee. they'll be fine tomorrow I'm sure.  After the 2nd round of ibuprofen they fell much better now.

It's good to hear you guys have a healthy approach to body weight. Elites are 50 to 60kgs. Only Jmac is close to that build I think on this thread.

I'm 6 feet and 130lbs/59kg, give or take a kg depending on fitness.  That's probably skinnier than a 5'6" 120 lb. elite.  I think I'm the current thread outlier, but someone who posted on the thread a few times soon after we moved from RW claimed to be 6'3" and 125 lbs.  I believe he was English and in his 20s and running in the mid-1:20s.
