Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2019 (Read 641 times)

Mark I had a look at their facebook page and saw the comments. Good on you for sticking up for them. Wrong decision but a decision had to be made.

Watson that's a shame on that Christchurch marathon.

There will be alot of runners claiming faster times than they should. We are probably the minority that take it so seriously. Alot of Marshalls are volunteers or paid groups that have absolutely no interest or knowledge of running.

So many running events too that quality of organising gets watered down.

Watson - yeah I did see that go up not long after the event. At least they have fronted up for it. Don’t tell JMac.

Piwi - For sure, if the race director thought there was a risk of further thunderstorms, then it was the right call to can the marathon given the off road parts of the course, the fact the race starts in the dark, and also having a marshall holding an umbrella at the top of North Head is not a good thing if there’s lightning around. It just turned out that the weather had cleared by race start so the organisers looked a bit silly. In the end they gave everyone free entry to next year’s marathon. They made the call for exactly the right reasons.

          quick post on my Week

got in a few more miles than anticipated due to taking advantage of an extra run on the holiday, so I ended up with a bit more than 27miles

          for the week.

I also got in a short ride on my "new to me bike" on Monday as well.

So I'm a week behind in my log...so here are two week summary...

Monday morning run  (2 days after 1/2 marathon): 9.75 @ 7:23  Legs felt really dead.  It's not the day after....it's the day after the day after

Tuesday morning run: 11.18 @7:02 surprisingly quick and legs felt really good.  Fell into some sub 7 min miles unintentionally and didn't realize until I saw my mile times.

Wednesday night run: 8.18 @6:55 running with my track club.  Tried to keep slowing down but got sucked into keeping up.

            Thursday morning run: 11.2 @7:02

Friday morning: 9 miles pretty quick @6:55, then went to the state fair for 6 hours....then found out my parents reserved the moving truck for Friday instead of Saturday by accident and was moving them out of their house until 3:30 in the morning

Sat: Got up Saturday morning and then moved furniture within their new place for 8 hours....6 miles @ 7:28.....and I felt horrible.

            Total 61 miles and change

            THIS WEEK

Monday: Labor day race. 1.8 warm up...Raced in a 36:29...4 mile cool down.  Again ended up much faster than expecting.  Setting a goal of 60:00 down from 65:00 for the Twin Cities 10 mile race.

            Tuesday: 9.1 recovery run

Wednesday:  Decided to go long on a whim and was clipping a bunch of miles @ 6:45.  We got talked into running a 3 mile loop at the start which was through briers, sand, and a million fallen trees and ran it at 8:30 to 9 min pace...never again.  Slowed at the end as the guy I was running with (who is much much faster) was having stomach issues so there where a few....ahem...pit stops.

Thursday:  Ran 8.3 @ 7:08 and was feeling the fast long run from Wed.

            Friday: Ran a 14 mile progression...pushed the last 5k with 6:33, 6:33, 6:13 the last 3 miles

Saturday: Ran a basic 12 mile at 7:03 pace

Sunday:  Had to finish moving my parents out of their house so I ran early in the morning, then helped them move, then went to work at my 2nd job.  So did 7 this morning and will to another 7 tonight af totter work.

total 83.5 miles after my run tonight

Have the 10 mile race in the beginning of October, so going to try to hammer some more miles and then afterwards we are going on vacation to Florida (10 year anniversary).  Then I go full on marathon training for Grandma's marathon 2020 (Late june)

DPS - nice week(s).  I'm considering another marathon in June next year so it could be cool if someone else on here is doing one at the same time.

Corey- nice job winding the mileage back up.

In other news, Nick Willis takes out an incredible photo finish to win his fifth 5th Ave Mile: https://youtu.be/_qjwttNkEvg

As always a brilliant race tactician - the slow pace early on probably suited him but watch how he sits in the middle of the pack and then times his finish to perfection.

                    Great week DPS!

I am a bit behind in my online life Wink This weekend it was the 12th anniversary, so I had to move around a bit my running schedule Wink

After the 10 K last I was worried I didn't have in me much for the HM in 15 days... but my week went well: 50 miles, with a couple of 7 miles including 3 miles at HM pace (6'50) and 18 miles on Saturday with the last 4 at 6'50 . I also included a couple of hilly sessions in there.

today I had an easy 4 miles and tomorrow I'll try my last interval training (5X1200) before the HM.

                        RIP Milkman

DPS - I'll start our favorite conversation: easy pace. Take this as you will, but your easy pace seems too fast for your fitness level. My best guess is that you are somewhere around 2:50 marathon shape, which means you're doing easy run at MP+35. Even on the fast end, I think you would be around 7:30 pace. I think Mark runs the fastest easy runs on here, but he uses an HRM to back up why he runs so fast (plus it seems like his PRs have caught up and his easy runs are a touch slower than they used to be as he has gone to 60+ MPW, but even still, my calc would say 6:45 easy pace is his equivalent of your 7:30).

If you want some good inspiration, check out Nimmals over on sub3. He just ran an age-graded mile of 93% (4:25), and yet all of his easy runs are 8:30+. Granted, he runs 100 MPW, but even if he was running more like 70MPW, I don't think he'd ever crack 8:00. Also feel free to just ignore all of this but it's something you should seriously consider if you want to get to top shape, which I think you have the potential to do. Maybe you wont' be running 8:00+ because you run relatively few workouts, but I don't think every run at 7:00 is ideal.

Mark - that was a crazy finish! Also, I'll say it again: NZ is a joke with course distance. Seriously, contact race directors and tell them how unacceptable this is. You are surprisingly tolerant of incompetence. I guess that's because you're a Kiwi and you guys are all much nicer than us
