DPS- that is a helluva marathon goal time to be aiming for!!  I knocked my dad's times off quite early on but they were only around 1:35 for the half and 3:30 for the marathon.

Me - weather is looking reasonable for Sunday.  Light northerly breeze and a few potential showers but otherwise OK.  Vast improvement on the horrendous wind on that course last time, so hopefully things will fall into place for sub-34.

The field is not looking very deep this year, probably because everyone hates the course at Bruce Pulman Park (on account of it being long and exposed to the wind).  In the M35-49 it will be a two horse race in the teams competition between Auckland and Wellington, probably advantage Wellington because they seem to have an absurd number of good Masters runners, their team is not as strong as last year on the face of it but neither is ours.

I will be a shot at a medal in the M35-39 age group, mostly because all the good Wellington runners are a bit over 40.

I'm still considering my race strategy.  The crazy option would be to go out with the lead group which will probably include Brian Garmonsway, Jonny McKee and Nick Moore who are all a minute or so quicker than me.  I'll likely die a bit on the last lap if I try that though so it's more likely I'll just try and hit a nice even pace as that tends to deliver my best results, if I can push it on the last lap that's a bonus.  Going to wear the VF Next %'s again after they delivered the goods in Dunedin, it's my last shot at a 10km PB for a little while and it's National Champs so may as well go for it.

I think it will be really tough but I figure I got about 4-5 years to really hammer down. Who knows. Planning on Grandma's and twin cities marathon (both in Minnesota) next year. He did it at Grandma's.  Ig I am not getting close I may eventually look at Chicago or CIM.

DP - That 28:16 is something, it's a shame your dad didn't get to run a marathon when he was younger, he easily would have went sub 2:20. As mentioned, you have genetics on your side which will help a lot. Keep the mileage up with no injuries and you have a great shot at going sub 2:40.

He went right into law school, then married, my brother at 27 and me at 29...and this was all long before any options for going pro. He was one year younger and frequently raced Pre.  Since he missed out on the trials, he didn't see much point in running through.  He returned to running like I did. When he decided he was too heavy.

The Wellington 35-49 team is not super strong.  There's only one of the top 5 guys there (Brian Garmonsway).  Brian will do 32-33 minutes.  The others will be around 35 minutes.

              PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

              40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

              2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

I guess you never know then.  Nick Moore will be low-33's.  I'll be hopefully just under 34 (or maybe just over haha).  Then we've got a few guys in the 35's.  Could be a real teams race in the sense that it'll come down to what the 3rd and 4th fastest guys in each team can put up in terms of relative placing.  If Wellington brought their actual top 5 there would be daylight between them and 2nd place.

                RIP Milkman

Mark - your recent half indicates more like low 33, so I think you should be safely under 34. No talk of slightly over 34, don’t make me go to the first page.

DPS - probably a good life long decision to be a lawyer. Even today, you don’t make much money as a pro unless you are top 10.

Me - Signed up for Boston today but only 50/50 on running it. If the damn hotels and travel weren’t so expensive/difficult, I would just do it, but paying that much to run a marathon just 4 months after my previous one is not very appealing at the moment. It’s more of a backup if CIM goes poorly.

Speaking of which, I’m going to write out my full plan over in Sub 3, but I’m really looking to get the mileage up this cycle. Based on my plan (ha, I know, me running my plan with zero injuries has never happened), I will start at 70MPW and ramp up to the low 80s, averaging around 75 MPW for the 12 weeks prior to taper. This will be by far the most I’ve trained for a marathon, as Boston was 60 mpw and NYC was 59 mpw. Luckily, I think I put in a good enough base over the summer (plus my new found very easy running) that I feel good going into this cycle. Maybe I won’t get to that 75 MPW, but I certainly should have my best mileage over a 6 month span heading into it.

I'm still a little scarred from battling the wind on that course 3 weeks ago (ran 34:15).  That plus Pulman Park's notoriety for being slow and/or long.  The goal is 100% sub-34.  That was also the goal last time before the weather intervened!

DPS - I’ve looked at your posts and you are obviously still in the honeymoon period of your comeback and probably making good gains every week...so I wouldn’t worry too much about the “fast” easy runs. I think you’ve got the right attitude and know that the Sub 2:37 marathon goal will take a few years of consistent and hopefully injury free running. I would advise getting a watch with HR and collect all the data. If you do hire a coach then the more info you have the better. 👍

This is all pretty true. As I am sure you saw, I've maybe run a 12-15 actual workouts excluding races.  Mostly I'm running a slow mile or two and settling into cruise mode and an occasional push the last few miles.  Next spring I'll actually be running true workouts as I move toward the Marathon (and 8k, 10k, 5k, and 1 half on the way)...that will force me to take true slow shorter recovery runs. My monthly average pace came down a lot in July when I started actually doing some quicker work and my body went back to 7 min daily grind mode.

I have a garmin 630 with HR strap, I just don't use the strap much cause I often end up with skin irritation if I wear it 3-4 days in a row. So usually just check HR once a week or so to make sure it is not crazy high as a forewarning of injury.

I am meeting next week with schneidr who is on this site too who will be doing the coaching.  I'm expecting most of nov, dec, jan to be 10-16/day base building with a few wrinkles to fend of insanity.

Ah the easy run debate again...
