Mark & Flavio - Good luck!

JMac - Please add to the first page Soldier Half, November 16, goal 1:29:59.  Also, please note in the comments that my March 2 half was a PR by 1:39. Thanks.

My legs took longer than I had expected to recover from last week’s 10K - hope it was the downhill course & not my new racing shoes - so I didn’t do any speed work or long runs, just two moderately long runs and a trail run.  My right hamstring gradually improved and was ok by the end of the week. My right quad was quite sore during runs in the middle of the week, but not too bad by Saturday. On Friday I tried out a newly opened easy (by mountain biking standards) mountain bike trail.  It was a nice break in my routine, but it was strange too - felt like I was on my toes the whole time getting ready for the small but constant dips, rises, & turns, and I could rarely see ahead for more than 20 yards. It reminded me of a video game where the screen changes quickly and constantly, and it was definitely more mentally tiring than an easy run.  My legs were tired on Saturday, but none of the niggles seemed serious.

      Sun - off

Mon - 9.3 miles easy, hamstring still sore but better

Tues - 6.2 easy, hamstring not as bad

      Weds - 32 minutes swimming

Thurs - 9.3 slow & easy, but I thought summer was over!  Got a late start because of a morning meeting, and the TDP was 156 at the start & 160 at the end.

      Fri - 6.1(?) trail run

      Sat - 6.2 slow & tired

      Total - 37.1 Miles

      12-week average - 29 mpw

      Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

        Mark - good luck tomorrow!

Me - I've so far survived taper week. I'm feeling lighter when walking around, but there are still some sore spots on the piriformis, high hamstrings and calves/soleus that I hope won't be issues during the race tomorrow.

See you guys on the other side!

Flavio - sounds like every taper I’ve ever had. It all seems to come together race day, even if you’re a bit sore in weird spots. Good luck!

On that note, I did something weird to my lower back in the shower this morning. It’s barely noticeable now, but just as I thought I’d got through race week without going slightly crazy for once... nope.

Since it’s National Champs, the races are all being live-streamed on the Athletics NZ Facebook page. If you tune in now you’re probably just going to see walkers (so weird), our race isn’t until 12:36pm NZ time.

Stream is great, I think Mark has just come into 3rd place at the 8km mark?  Good 30 second discussion about Mark from the commentators, sounds like one of them may have coached Mark.

Hopefully it is saved so o can watch later. Going to hit the treadmill tonight as it is already late and I don't want to run with a head lamp.

Going to try 16 miles with last 4 at 6 min pace (10 mile race pace)

                      Thoughts and prayers welcome. Lol.

Hi guys, had a really good run. 33:15 official, reasonable but not perfect conditions. Paced it nice and evenly and managed to run down 4th place on lap 3 and 3rd place (Brian) on lap 4.

I think Brad Luiten was commentating on the live stream for a bit - have run with / against him a lot so explains why he knows a bit! Will have to watch later.

I did 12 miles at 7:08 per mile and only made it 3 miles at 6:00. Left knee (which has had a few injuries) started to get sore and I called it early. With my last race in 3 weeks want to stay health and 2 workouts a week starts Tuesday.
