Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2019 (Read 641 times)

Track and field is a hard sport to follow as a Brazilian. We have once in a lifetime athletes snatching gold.

There is no collegiate sports program and most of the pros here are living below the line of poverty, barely making ends meet by making instagram posts for local sponsors.

We've had Joaquim Cruz, way back in the 800's. Then Ronaldo da Costa held the world marathon record briefly in 1998. He came back home as a world record holder, with a bit of money on his account. He got involved with some dodgy characters and then suddenly had to lay low (literally disappear for a few months) as some guys were hunting him down. He was never the same after that and never returned to his glory days.

More recently, Vanderlei Cordeiro was leading the 2004 olympics marathon race before being tackled by an Irish nut job. He went on to win the Bronze medal.

Marilson won the New York marathon twice.

And Thiago Braz won gold in the Rio Olympics in a very suspect performance.

Watching Track and field usually involves seeing a bunch of Americans win gold, silver and bronze, I can understand why my fellow countrymen are not that interested.

My running role models are mostly regular folks who I've met on the forums or at races over the years who put in consistent solid training despite busy live with families and careers.

Looking at famous runners, my role models are mostly pro ultra runners.  I like Jeff Browning who at 48 is still winning 100 mile races and finishing top 10 at Western States.  I'm also a big fan of Ann Trason who has done things that will likely never be duplicated, partly due to her greatness, and partly due to things being different now.  I don't see anyone coming close to 14 Western States wins.  The Comrades/Western States wins in the same year could happen again, but it would take someone truly special (heck, not many people even finish both races in the same year).  Camille Heron may have a shot, but she struggles at WS.

Camille Buscomb is in the 5000m final. I know she's cousin or 2nd cousin to all you Kiwi guys, but wasn't she the one out sprinting one of you guys on a race last year?

I burst out laughing when I read this and now all my workmates think I am even crazier (it's easier to leave it that way than to try and explain the joke).

But yes, Flavio, Camille kicked my butt at the end of last year's Auckland Half Marathon - too fast over the last 1500m.  She has been in great form at World Champs, having run an Olympic Qualifier and PB in the 10,000m she's now gone and slashed 15 seconds off her 5000m PB in the heats (and ran an Olympic qualifier there too).  Easily the best performer of the Kiwi runners so far.

Sounds like she gave you a spanking Mark I bet you enjoyed that

Where are you guys watching the Doha stuff ? YouTube just has scraps. The stadiums are bloody empty. They are giving free tickets to migrant workers to boost attendance.

This is what happens when money rules over commonsense.

Flavio I was hoping Salazar wasn't Brazilian and luckily he wasn't

Speaking of weak inflexible ankles, mine are terrible. When I run offroad any little rut or tree root can make me hurt.

I don't have any confidence in my ankles when bounding down hill. Bouncy light shoes help for my workouts.

Decent 8k tempo today. Was comfortable at sub 4 min/km pace. Next time I will just carry on and get a sub 40 10k.

I haven't actually run one since turning 50 nearly 2 years ago.

              RIP Milkman

my dad (and it's signed)....not a big fan of his politics later in life but running legend

My screen cut off and I only saw DPS’s line written like this and thought: well that’s a shame him and his father don’t get along anymore.

I’ve never really looked up to any pro runners, or pro athletes in general for that matter. Yes, they work hard, but they were all born with a gift that none of us have. IF you let me run professionally, I would work just as hard as they do. Not sure why I should be looking up to people like that. I agree with Paul that I”m more impressed with you guys who get up at 4 am because you have a family and a job and still run so much.

Piwi - I have YoutubeTV, which gives me the Olympic Channel. Watching the women’s marathon now, what a DISASTER this is. Never mind the fan issue you talked about, this literally life and death they’re playing with.

Also, go get a 10K under 40 in a time trial. That would be crazy impressive and enough to say that 2019 was a success.

I see your point.  The reality is, pro athletes have a life that is designed to help them run the best times they can.  They have specifically designed training (and nutritional) regimes, physio, massage, all that sort of thing, and the advantage of being able to sleep heaps and have daytime naps and that sort of great stuff that the rest of us can only dream of.  The rest of us are trying to do the best we can around work, family, etc. and generally we don't have the luxury of even being able to have a regular daytime nap (oh my god that would be amazing).

I may occasionally nap on the couch in the afternoon sun...  but I don't do physio or coaches as of yet.

Jmac I will go watch that marathon now. Its quite scary watching marathoners getting heat stroke. Ok my goal is sub 40 on Strava. You have motivated me.

Mark - I was thinking maybe you'd call for a rematch given your recent development but it looks like she's improved much faster than you.

Many elites are unable to rest sufficiently due to sponsorship events, side businesses, family obligations, etc (see Paul Chelimo and his new born as an example).

But they are of course gifted, especially with the ability to train more and not get injured. I think that might be the single most important advantage elites have over us mere mortals.

Pelé was the greatest soccer player ever for that very reason. Kipchoge also never gets injured. Imagine if Kenenisa never got injured, he'd be running laps around Kipchoge by now.

Piwi - LOL at the spanking.

You can watch ALL the events in the youtube livestream on the official channel. They're a piece of shit though and have geo-locked it, so you will need to install the Opera browser and then activate the VPN on the top left. You might have to resign yourself to 480p though due to the VPN lag.

For other events such as diamond leagues and major marathons I usually find a link at watch athletics .

As for the ankles, I'd say work your glutes (candidate for the front page best quotes). The more your back and back of leg work the less your ankles have to work. It seems to have worked for me the past 2 years.

Piwi - haha yeah I was trying to be respectful, she is a good athlete.

Flavio - she is a 5,000 to 10,000m specialist but was just coming back from injury last year when I ran with her.  And on your point re elites, they have access to a lot more preventive treatment to stop them getting injured in the first place, and if they do, they have access to specialists who are experts and can help them sort the problem quickly.

Me - Well unfortunately 2 of our team of 7 are out injured for National Road Relays, including our fastest guy (Greg Darbyshire).  We have a couple of potential subs from another club, or else someone will have to run 2 legs.  This takes us from being probably middle of the pack in the Mens A Grade (14 teams) to being one of the weaker teams and potentially in danger of being pipped by some of the B Grade sides.  Not ideal but it's really just bad luck as both guys got injured in the last week.  This means my fun-looking 9.5km leg (some gravel road, then a nice downhill) has been switched for a slightly trickier looking 10.2km leg (a few rollers and a big hill), although it can't possibly suck as much as the leg I had on last year's course.

I packed my older Saucony flats rather than the Vaporflies thinking part of my allocated leg was on gravel road, now it's all on proper roads haha.  But in the circumstances I'm kind of just treating it as a hard tempo session anyway.

Mark yeah sorry you are right. Sometimes I write things without thinking...well quite often.

That's a bummer with your team. There's so many fast guys out there who don't belong to a club but could fit in.

Flavio thanks for the YouTube link. It says not available in your country. Is this where I have to change my VPN?

Glutes are such a pain in the arse  very hard to target.

                          Back to squats !
