RIP Milkman

Watson - I guess my week wasn't good?  anyway nice week good to see you back out there after some down weeks. I went back in the thread a few days ago and saw you had said you've had decreasing miles for 3 years straight, would be good to see that trend reverse.

Piwi - so happy for you! Seriously amazing. It definitely counts. By Kiwi standards of course measurements, a 10K on GPS is a long course

    5K: 16:37 (11/20)  |  10K: 34:49 (10/19)  |  HM: 1:14:57 (5/22)  |  FM: 2:36:31 (12/19)

    Marky_Mark_17

Kipchoge / 1:59 - awesome achievement, no doubt about that, and it shows it can be done.  It will be even more exceptional if someone can run a sub-2 in an actual race without all the controlled conditions to assist though.

edit: JMac I agree this was badly needed in light of the Salazar sh!t show.  Rupp is seriously tarnished from that, particularly his Olympic double a few years back.  Big vindication for Kara Goucher and Steve Magness.  A running friend put it quite well the other day when he said 'there's no legit reason for a running coach to be that tight with an endocrinologist'.  It's a shame it will totally overshadow Chicago this year regardless of the result (but particularly if Farah or Rupp win).

      James - nice week.

JMac - another good week in the bag.  I googled the course for your race.  It'll be a tricky one to pace as it looks like there is a bit of climbing in the last 5km or so.  This means you will need to have a bit of gas saved up, or you'll need to be ahead of pace by the 10 mile mark.  If I was you, I'd be trying to bank some fast km's in the first 5km or so.  That part of the course looks like it's downhill, so it's not the same thing as 'going out too fast' haha.

Piwi - nice week and good job on the 10km TT (especially with a cold).

Watson - nice week, especially that hilly run today.

Me - well the week was going well until I got a cold on Thursday.  I didn't miss any days, but kept the efforts steady rather than hard on the track yesterday.  7pm bedtime last night and I'm feeling better today, so hopefully back to normal tomorrow.  Sucks having a cold but I'm grateful that it wasn't around a race.  Also ticked over the 2k miles mark this morning.

Jmac i make it easy by running dead flat straight courses on coolish mornings with no wind . It certainly gives me a lift though and hopefully I can push on from this. Oh and my age graded time is 34.19 but I know that doesnt matter

JMac - It will be a bittersweet moment for the person who does eventually run a legit Sub 2 marathon. What Kipchoge did is obviously an amazing achievement, but forgive me for not getting over excited about it!  Let’s have a Kipchoge/Bekele showdown....winner takes all. 😁

MickJogger - Thanks for being part of this group so I’m not last haha.

At least you’ve got an injury as an excuse.

Also no issue with eating Swiss junk food, I bet that means grass fed high quality burgers with baked potatoes and a green juice.

And then you top it all with high grade Swiss chocolate.

James - I’ll confess I’m a bit skeptical of any extra benefits from training in the heat. Unless you race in colder weather, in which case you will off course race much faster than you trained.

It’s been happening to me for 7 years now.

I wonder if your average will increase to 45mpw next year. You’re on a roll recently.

                  Jmac - you’re on a roll too!!!

Piwi - awesome job on sub 39. It’s great to have someone on the board just slightly faster than me so I have someone to chase.

Kipchoge - I’ve watched just the last 15 minutes. I knew the first 1h45 would be boring as hell.

Watson - I would hope Bekele can keep his good boy routine until April so he can arrive healthy to the London marathon. A true showdown between him and Kipchoge would be awesome. It’s a pity so far Kipchoge has swept the floor with him in the marathon.

Bekele is the GOAT. He truly looks like a leopard chasing a prey when he unleashes his kick.

me - an interesting week, mileage is slowly increasing, 45km this week, a bit more planned for the next one.

What the hell is going onnnnnn!!!!! They're breaking records left and right, those shoes must have rocket engines.

Brigid Kosgei has just beaten the women's marathon world record.

They said beforehand that she would go for the race record of 2h17, but when I saw the 2 male pacemakers I knew she was going for Paula's record. They took her out too fast, but somehow she found a way to find a pace and stick to it until the end.

I had to sit through the HORRENDOUS broadcasting, with no time splits, 2 minutes of race broadcasting and then 10 minutes of the most idiotic, completely unrelated interviews.

The men making their moves and Brigid running below WR pace and all they could think of was a 10 minute block of interviews, including interviewing 2nd and 3rd place in the wheelchair race.

By the way, the pacemakers dropped out before 40k. What a day.

Also, a bad day for NOP runners (and ex NOP runner Sir Mo).

Another incredible performance... but it was already clear in London that she could have gone for it Smile

I believe she was 23rd or 24th overall...

my week is slightly under the planned mileage, but I have a bad infection on my toe (something came up on Tuesday and i ignored it during my travel to Germany but cannot ignore it anymore... it got painful.. I'll see a doctor tomorrow. anyway:

Flavio wow on that women's world record. No one has come close it looked impossible. I need to watch a replay and the top men looked like it was almost a tie.

I would love to have your 5k and down pace.

Bekele has come back into the spotlight after that amazing marathon. He always seemed to keep dropping out of races in recent years. I think he was battling injury. He looked very trim for that latest race and was in great shape. Let's hope there's some more top races.

Auckland Half Marathon is this coming Sunday:

                          • I have run it every year since 2015 (except 2017, when I did the full marathon)
                          • It is not a goal race this year (the goal race is Kerikeri HM in just over a month)
                          • The last 3 weeks have been pretty big mileage (101km / 91km (incl. 10k race) / 100km) - in fact this is my biggest 3 week stretch ever
                          • My cold slowly seems to be disappearing and should be 100% in a day or two
                          • It is a relatively slow course with quite a few hills in the first half (total elevation gain ~160m / 520 ft)
                          • This week was going to be a cutback week anyway

The question is, given I'm entered, should I cruise it (my original plan) or go hard and race it?

If I race it, it certainly won't be a PB (given lack of taper and slow course) but I'd probably be gunning for a course PB (currently 1:16:29).

I'm not sure that you'd gain much by racing it.  It's not a goal race, you almost certainly won't get a PB, and you've had some great races very recently, so it's not like it'd be a big highlight even if you raced it well.  You're coming off your biggest 3-week mileage ever, so racing it might be an unnecessary risk.  If I were you, I'd stick to the original plan and cruise it.

Mark - I don’t know how to not race all out so that is what I would do.  I do like the idea of cruising it in your current situation.

I had had a decent week.  52.4 miles (about 2200 for the year).

Saturday - 11 roads with some faster bits.  Was supposed to run a 10K but it was canceled due to air quality concerns due to fires
