      RIP Milkman

Thanks everyone for the kind words and tracking! That was the best executed race of my life. Had to see how the first 5K went, but when I hit 5:50 in mile 3 and felt like it was easy, I knew it was time to go for sub 6:00 for the whole thing. And I didn’t sandbag! I said if everything went right, I could go for that sub 2:37. It all did go right (weather turned out okay, although humid, rain held out, stomach held up better than it has in any marathon in the past).

Full race report coming later in the week (work event for the next few days), but I think mark pointed out exactly what led to the success - a drama free cycle where I missed exactly one 11 mile run over 15 weeks, and that was it.

Particularly for this forum, I pointed out my progression from struggling for years to break 6:00 in a 5K (I think I ran between 18:45 and 19:00 for 4 straight races) to nabbing a sub 6:00 in the marathon by the skin of my teeth. So for everyone that feels like they’re stuck, there’s definitely a way to break through if you can get lucky with injuries and stay consistent!

          Well done CIM runners.

I ran my HM today and it did not go quite as planned.  I thought I could run around 1:25 but wound up at 1:28:40.  I attribute the time to three factors.  1) Conditions were not ideal (60F, near 100% RH, modest head wind, light rain at times); 2) Training hasn't been great.  I've been struggling to train consistently since AC 100.  I have LA Marathon in 13 weeks, so hopefully can turn things around.  3) I'm maybe 4-5 pounds above my ideal racing weight.

Here is Strava link to the race.

          Quick summary:

I did my usual ~2 mile warmup for this race (and most races).  Legs felt a little heavy during the warmup.  I got in position at the start about 12 minutes before the gun.

This race is a flat point-to-point with a couple overpasses being the only hills.  I started out at what felt like a comfortable pace, but within the first two miles realized it was too hard and dialed it back a bit. (6:17, 6:25, 6:28 first three).

After the first three I hoped I could keep it around 6:30 and finish around 1:26.  Somewhere around this point a light drizzle started.  The pace continued to feel too hard and I slowed a bit more.  Next three were 6:39, 6:37, 6:40.

At his point some doubt about sub-1:30 is creeping in.  I continue to run by effort, and just hope I can keep it 6:50 and under for the rest of the race.  There is more wind at this point as well.  I manage to do that just barely for the next three.  (6:52, 6:45, 6:49).

I really want it to be over now, but manage to somewhat hold the pace.  In the last few miles I get passed by two runners who appear to be in my AG and there is nothing I an do.  About 1.5 miles from the finish the lead woman passes me as well (I'm somewhat surprised that the lead woman isn't faster.  This race used to offer prize money and winning times were quite a bit faster.)  I finish it out in 6:48, 6:56, 7:01, 7:02 and 6:22 pace for last 0.2 on the Garmin).  I wound up 4th AG after winning my AG last two times I've done this race (my time would have won last year).

One benefit of 4th AG is that I can leave immediately and don't need to stick around for an AG prize ($25 running store gift card last year).

Mark nice week, it's gotta feel good not to have to get up and go on a 4 am run.

Kimba nice week sorry to hear about your back issue hope you get over it soon.

Watson, DP, James, Flavio  nice week

For me I'm continuing to build up weekly miles hit a total of 45.6 this week thanks to a day off on Monday and getting 2 runs in.

            Mon  6.0+ 6.6

            Tue off

            Wed 5.3

            Thur off

            Fri 4.3

            Sat 16.1

            Sun  7.1

I've averaged 40.4 over the last 5 weeks I'm putting in some strides and a little bit of M pace work here and there, so far no issue with my lower abdomen fingers cross it won't pop up.

I have 2 days off this week so I'm hoping to put in about the same amount of miles this week and then take a cut back the following week.

Paul-  Way to keep it under 1:30.  That'll happen some days.  With the rain did you keep everything smooth, or did you get some chaffing...that tends to be my issue on light rain races....

OK just catching up on the weeklies that got a bit buried with the excitement of JMac's tracking/result.

Corey - promising that you're getting the mileage built back up with no signs of any residual injury issues.

Kimba - nice week, hope that pain fades as quickly as it appeared.

Watson - nice week and good luck for the 5k race.  Is that the same series that you've run in the past?  It's good the weather has died down, they were actually forced to cancel some of the NZ Secondary Schools track events on the weekend, it was that bad.

Corey / Watson: thanks, I think I might still sneak in one or two 4am efforts next year though, just for old times sake... I think the theme for this year for me has been about getting it done despite life challenges and sometimes it's good to remind yourself of the strength that can come from adversity.  Also it will probably get an entertaining reaction on Strava.

Paul - some days it's just not your day!  That humidity would've been a factor, and dealing with a headwind on a point to point course is a tough ask (physically and mentally).  Those factors were easily a few minutes worth.  Well done getting it done despite all of that.

DPS - all about the work! Another big week.  Your commitment is awesome.

Forgot to mention our club prizegiving was on Saturday, I got a couple of awards for being the fastest old bloke.  Miss 2.5 promptly grabbed one of the trophies and said 'I win! I win!' (she's now claimed it as hers at home and carries it around too).  She got very excited about running on the grass track too, good to see the competitive spirit is strong there!

Got to feel for the people doing the Kepler Challenge over the weekend.  Looked absolutely horrific with waist deep water in places.  Hard to believe the south island is cut off only 200km south of where I am - it was a bit windy here over the weekend but apart from that, no hint of what was happening not that far away.  Christchurch not actually impacted by natural disasters is a nice change.  And man made for that matter.

Last weeks 5k race was cancelled due to the wind. I've ran this quite a few times, the course is very slightly different now.

There was a 5k Pop Up Park run on Sunday that got cancelled due to lightning.  They also cancelled the Crazy Man which is a kayak + bike + run race.

Thanks.  Back seemed fine when I ran today.  Still a little tugging when I twist a certain way, but I think I "unstuck" whatever was stuck with some stretching and mobility drills.

Question:  I'm in the market for some good winter running tights.  What do you guys like for when it's really cold, like 20-30 degrees (F)?  I have one pair of thick tights from Sugoi, which I like, but I need an additional pair since I'll be doing much more outdoor running this winter than I have in the past several winters.

JMac - Smashed it! Probably the best looking marathon splits I've ever seen. That's certainly one to hang your hat on.

Paul - Did you get in? For now, at least, you're the only ultrarunner in the group. I have some ambitions, though.

                                Mark - Good looking week.

Kimba - Nice consistency. The back thing seems a bit weird to me - what causes that? At least if it only happens once a year you should be in the clear for a while!
Strides every 2-3 days would probably be good - maybe 4-ish to start and build up to maybe 8. I like to sprinkle those in across the last mile or two of my runs, some like to do them afterwards. I don't know that it makes a difference either way.
Also, I really like the 2XU Thermal compression tights. Great quality, but they're a bit pricey without a sale, though.

                                DPS - Big week!

Flavio - Feeling better yet? Also, quite the algebra workouts!

CFarr - Nice job on the consistency as well.

I'm about over this taper business, but am very glad that the antibiotics are out of my system! My LR on Saturday was 12 miles, and I was able to do the entire thing without even contemplating taking a break. Prior to that it was difficult to go 7 miles without wanting a bit of a break, even at easy pace.
Forecast is looking good for Dallas. 55 miles last week. Just a 3x 1T (perhaps with double rest) coming up tomorrow, then probably some strides on Friday for quality this week.
