Paul - great effort, those warm days are so frustrating. I agree age group prize giving is cumbersome (though nice the first time you get it).

Corey - Very nice week, keep that consistency!

Kimba - I have similar niggles from strength training around the spine erector and the scapula base. But they’re nowhere near as strong as what you had.

Mine sometimes make it hard to breathe normally though.

Keen - I was feeling okay-ish this morning but now feeling worse this afternoon. I’ve scheduled a doctor for tomorrow morning.

This has been going for a week already.

Ran 20:09/20:10 this afternoon.  Slightly warm, slightly windy, but much better than my Half a few weeks ago.  Pacer was a little slow, left him at 3km. Splits were 4:06, 4:10, 4:08, 3:54, 3:50, 0:02.  Probably should have left him at 2km.

      PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

      2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

Flavio - Any improvement overnight? What'd the doc say?

Watson - Good job on the 5k. Pacers in a 5k? Interesting.

I've been feeling progressively better since Saturday, but it now really seems like the effects of the antibiotics are completely gone. My endurance felt like it was back Saturday, and my HR was finally back down to where it should be as of this morning. Had a good 3x 1T this morning, though with extra rest between the T miles. Felt like I nailed the effort, though the pace for the first was WAY fast thanks to a substantially downhill last half or so. Sunday needs to get here soon.

All - Thanks for the comments on my race.

Keen - No, I did not get into Western States.  I only had two tickets, so it was expected (2.5% chance).  I did get in in 2018 with two tickets.  Maybe next year, realistically, not for another 3-4 years.

Keen - it is a weekly 5k series over daylight savings time.  Each week there are pacers, the pacers aim times are different by week.  This week they were 20, 22:30, 25 and 30 minutes.

Watson - that's inexcusably bad by the pacer for a 5km!  I get why you might go a little easy for the first km but no excuse to be even slower the 2nd km.

Keen - great news that you've bounced back after those antibiotics!

I did my run pre-work due to an xmas party this afternoon - it's okay dragging yourself out of bed at 5:30am when it's perfect running weather like today but doing your runs consistently at 4:30am Mark is very impressive.  Even more impressive being awake enough to do a solid workout.

I did see that unusual morning run from you on Strava this morning!  It also got me thinking... you normally train late morning or early evening (at least from what I recall seeing on Strava).  Is it worth throwing the odd early morning one in there more often so it's not a shock to the system when it gets to race day?  I think even Christchurch is still an 8am start despite being only a few weeks off the shortest day.

Disclaimer: for me it was only the Sunday long runs that required a 4am start and they were always just long cruises.  But most days I am up at around 5am and running by 5:30-6am.

Watson - Pathetic effort by the pacer, perhaps it was too close to their limit.

You should’ve left him after the first K. Summer 5Ks are for the brave hearts!

Keen - no improvements unfortunately. The doc says it's just a very strong allergic reaction, maybe a virus factored in.

Thankfully I won’t need antibiotics, just anti allergy pills  + keep my current routine of nasal spray + stomach anti acid reflux pill.

I shouldn’t complain too much though, a lot of people out there with real sickness.

Anyway, I'll take 2 days completely off (including from work) and see what happens.

I’m so glad to hear you’re on the mend, with the race approaching I’m sure it was causing some apprehension on you. It's funny you're always super conservative with your pacing during races but in the marathon it will serve you just right!

Early mornings - I’m waking up earlier and earlier as I age. I remember how annoying it was that mom would want us out of bed by 8am on the weekends when I was a teenager.

These days I’m waking up around 5:30 am, though it’s certainly easier now during summer as it’s already sunny out there by that time.

Mark - Yep, good point.  I do try and replicate race morning as much as possible in the weeks leading up to the race.  8am in May/June is certainly very different to 8am in December/January - there is something to be said for finishing a run while it's still dark and most people are still asleep though.

Flavio - I think it's age and summer for me - I used to be able to sleep late even in summer but now when it's light I have no chance.  Rather than lie in bed from 5am I may start using this time over summer.  It's dark until about 7:30am in mid-winter and I mostly sleep all the way to my alarm.

                      RIP Milkman

Sorry for being a bit MIA, not fully caught up but just a few thoughts.

Paul: sounds like a tough half. I do like the solace you took out of not having to stick around. I did a few small races this year, most notably for my half, where the awards ceremony was at 11 am for a race that started at 8 am. No way I was sticking around for another 1.5 hours just for them to give me a 2nd place trophy. I know they like to wait until everyone is done especially for AG awards, but 3 hours is not acceptable.

Keen: GO GET IT THIS WEEKEND! Really looking forward to your race. Same advice I gave to Brew: lock into 6:45-6:50 on the GPS for the first half and never let any mile get ahead of 6:45. You've run a few marathons so not a lot of other advice, but one thing I kept reminding myself which is very important in a full unlike any other race: you will hit a rough patch somewhere early in the race where you question the whole thing. For me, it's usually somewhere between mile 8-12. At CIM, it was my hip flexors starting to feel sore. I've also had quad soreness set in early on. Don't let it get to you, because it WILL pass. And if you get to mile 20 and don't feel like the wheels are about to come off, you're golden. Just keep up the effort and one mile 24 hits, you know it's just a simple TLT run where you just gotta finish the last effort and be done.

Steve - I wouldn't worry too much about morning running. As you've noticed, I'm a late night runner, with most of my runs starting around 6:30 PM and plenty of runs where my quality doesn't start until after 8 PM. The thing about race day is that you're often awake for 3 hours before the gun goes off, so it's not exactly the same as a morning runner who just throws on their shoes and heads out the door. You'll be okay.

Flavio - I would have killed my mom if she wanted me up at 8 am. When I was a teenager, it was rare that I was up before noon. Things are obviously different now, but as I just stated to Steve, I'm still not a morning person and will often sleep until 10 am on weekends if my body doesn't force myself up earlier. The beauty of no children I guess. No idea how Mark does it.

Me - usual post race soreness where it is hard to walk, but nothing out of the ordinary. Particular for this forum, having just run a 2:36, I think that HM PR needs to come down soon

One issue with the pacer was GPS.  He had 3:58 for the first km, I had 4:06, mine was right.  I am not too worried.

Also a good point - for an 8am race I'll be up at 5am so I can have a reasonably big breakfast and drink lots of water (although most of it is drunk the previous day) and have it digested by race start time.  I always find the 5-6am hour goes slowly and I wonder why I'm up then suddenly time disappears like lightning and I find myself rushing.  Not sure how I'd cope with a New York or even an Auckland start which requires a lot more travelling or planning than most local races.

I think my performance in the half helped clear out some of the anxieties that would otherwise be plaguing me right now. Though there is a nagging thought in the back of my mind that since I've cut out so much mileage I'm getting fat to the point that if I ever make it to the high point of the marathon (hill ~mi 20) I'll be able to just roll downhill to the finish.

This sucks, but DW is sick. I do hope she gets better soon, but is it bad form to avoid one's wife for a race???
