Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2019 (Read 641 times)

Keen I need to see a picture of you with the ski goggles and headlamp on!  I can't imagine trying to run with that on.

I love the hand warmers though I have never used them while running they are great for all other outdoor activities when there is less than ideal conditions.

Jmac, Flavio- Yeah, you're probably right, I should be more focused on just getting healthy enough to finish, I have no idea where I will be aerobically and how my body will handle the buildup again.

Brent- Sub 2:45 was my initial goal for Boston. I figured that with a solid block of training, I would be capable of setting a massive PR, but alas... For this marathon block I was planning on running mostly Lydiard, but was injured in the base phase. I think I will continue to use it once I am healthy because it really emphasizes running based on feel as opposed to pace, and it has led to so much success in the past. I haven't run Boston before, my first marathon was last June at Grandma's. You got strava?

I had my first PT appointment today and it sounds like I should be all set to start running again! I ran 2 miles today and I've been recommended to take it very slow at 2-3 miles every couple days. I'm hoping to complement my running with some more biking (because I haven't had enough of that lately) and LOTS of stretching. Turns out my hips are pretty tight and my ankle mobility is crap. But hey, I'm running!

      PR's: 800 - 2:01.9, 1600 - 4:34.4, 3 mile - 16:00, Full Marathon - 2:54:49

Matt Good to hear you are able to start running again even if it is limited to just a few miles.  I know you are happy.  Take it slow though.

        RIP Milkman

Matt - I think you'll find most runners have terrible hips. Probably the first thing I started working on when I went to a PT the first time at 23. It's something I keep as part of my regimine now when doing leg strengthening as injury prevention. One of the good things about PTs is you learn a bunch of exercises you can that do at home so you know what to do when your next injury comes up. Invest in some therabands, i just bought these to refresh my old set and they're perfect as they have different strength levels. All I do now is ankle work for my PTT and general hip strengthening, so we're in the same boat. Regarding where you are aerobically: you're probably great. That's never the issues: it's always tendons/ligaments/muscles that have the problems. I came back from 12 days completely off and on my first run felt like I hadn't taken any time off and was hitting the same easy pace I was hitting before the time. However, the next day I woke up and felt like I ran a marathon. It took me a good 10 days to feel normal again.

Piwi - I think your joke about manual labor went way over my head.

Mark - Awesome on the high mileage month! Looking forward to seeing what happens during the race this weekend.

JMac - Maybe you should contact the guy who ran Arrowhead over the weekend and see what he did for gloves/mittens?
I really noticed the extra soreness when coming back to running this month. I'd finish an 8 miler and feel it and wonder how I used to do 10 every day and not feel sore or tight at all.

CFarr - I'm sure I looked quite odd, but the important thing was that I was warm and my eyes weren't dried out! It wasn't uncomfortable at all, believe it or not. The headlamp was sitting a bit higher than normal so my muscle memory for reaching to the brightness switch was a bit off, but that was the only "problem".

Matt - Glad to hear you're cleared for running. Hip tightness is something I've been working on a lot as well.

keen - has the vortex come all the way down to you guys? Left the apartment this morning and it was 3F. Can't remember the last time I saw that number. Too bad I didn't run this morning otherwise I would have gotten the "run more miles than degrees" award that's floating around on the other thread. Should be about 13 degrees later when I do run and I'm only doing 10, so I'm going to miss out.

JMac - We're just past the edge of the mass of cold air by about 100 miles or so. We got down to about 20 again this morning, but without yesterday's wind. We're actually supposed to warm up to 60's-70 over the weekend before getting down to highs in the 30's mid next week.
3F would be pretty crazy around here. I can only remember a few times in the last couple years when we've been that cold.

Sorry for interrupting the interesting discussion on the weather (here this morning I could not go out the door and it was just -5 celsius... I have no idea how you can survive...). I wanted to give a quick update with the mileage at the end of the month...

261 miles (that is 420 Km!!!!!!) this is over 50 miles more than I have ever run in 1 month (of course it helps that January has 31 days Wink )

I am very proud of my legs Smile At the moment they are feeling tired but strong. I ope I can keep it up for the next 90 days (until the Belfast marathon). But for now, I hope they will stand up tomorrow, especially considering that tonight I went with the running club to the track (bad idea...) after a 7 miles run (other bad idea), I got warm up and drills (nice running form exercise, but also squats and so on...) and then interval :

                        200mt (40') ., 300 mt (65'), 400 mt. (87'') 500 mt, (1'51'') 600 mt. (2'04'') 500 mt. (1'51'') 400 mt (71'') 300 mt (62'') 200 mt. (40'' relaxed) with 1:30 recovery

I think I am going to just collapse on the sofa now Wink

                        good night Smile

Marco nice workout and Excellent month overall!

                            Watson nice month as well.

I came in at 171 miles for the month just coming in under my target of 175.

January was interesting as I started off very well hitting some good workouts in prep for my 5k, which ultimately got postponed.

Then suffered a bit of an issue with my lower abdomen which after a week and a half of easy running is feeling better but has left me

debating my race plans and goals for the near future.

Although I got in a decent # of miles I don't think I am sharp enough or have done enough of the speed work necessary to break my PR let alone break 20 in my 5k re-planned for next weekend.  I was also planning on doing a HM on Feb 23 which is fast approaching but I don't feel I am going to be ready for that either which is unfortunate because it is a fast course and was looking forward to making a PR attempt.

I I have another possibility in May for another fast HM course as an option. I guess I will just let it roll and see how I feel in the coming weeks.

RE: winter running - we need that UndersleptDad dude here for that advice. He's the Canadian that would often run in -30s, -40s. As for gloves, I agree with the mitten style, along with the hand warmers that were mentioned. That way it's easier to bunch your fingers up and clinch the hand warmer. Regular gloves don't do the trick for me for that reason - fingers still get cold.

Well I'm pretty much down and out. Took two days off of work, and finally went in for treatment - got the dreaded strep that's been going around. It's absolutely hell for the throat and chest. Not to mention the nausea and dizziness. On antibiotics now, so hopefully that will straighten me out soon. Yes I'm foolishly still trying to run with strep - but just 3-4 miles per day on the TM. No chance I'm battling the vortex in these health conditions.

I think a couple of days off will really help the throat.

Underslept was jaw dropping in some of the conditions he trained in.
