Watson - I think you're right... I arguably race a bit too often, but there's definitely something to be said for always having a race not too far over the horizon to keep you focused

Me - well the mid-morning suckage has been interesting because it's been pretty humid this week too.  Yesterday's track session had a TDP of close to 150 and I was feeling it.  Funnily, I remember thinking "I haven't run in conditions this shitty since the Orewa Half Marathon 2018".  This was validated when Smashrun told me it was my hottest run in a year and yep - the Orewa Half was February 2018.  Having said that, I'm kind of embracing it because there's still the chance of humid or warm conditions for Maraetai Half in 3 weeks and it's good for resilience.

JMac - I have no idea why he seems to despise those shoes. From what he wears and typically recommends he likes maximal cushioned shoes and/or supportive ones. He doesn't at all like shoes that are "floppy" or flexible like Kinvaras or my beloved Escalantes. Maybe he's stuck in the post "Born to Run" backlash against barefoot running and minimalist shoes.

Mark - Funny stuff with that McD's promotion.

Piwi certainly needs to make some appearance around here. Is it possible to log fishing on Strava?

What I missed Piwi's retirement... Sad story, he is a good guy. But a marathon is a beast and he doesnt train just to finish.

I am sure he will be back online as soon as the marathon he had signed up for is over Smile probably just a mental thing for now.

Me: got myself a nasty cold during my ski holiday and have been caughing my guts out. It will hopefully help with my V02max later, as my lungs must be twice as strong now, with all the caughing. Its been close to 10 days now off the trails and I hate it because global warming is sending us first signs of an awesome spring.

Hi guys firstly I'd like to apologize for cutting you off like a discarded girlfriend.

I feel a bit embarrassed and ashamed to have just given up my training and as some of you know I have done this before.

I burnt out again with a combination of stressful work weeks where physically and mentally I couldn't face the high mileage at 5am each day and then drag myself off to work. My job is semi physical and perhaps if I had a desk job I may have stuck at running longer.

Mentally I haven't really had a decent desire to race since about 2015 and I doubt that will change.

I appreciate the kind words and been missed is humbling.

Mikkey sorry to let you down I hope you still run hard at Brighton. I will contact you and still get that jog in as I will still be visiting Brighton.

I feel like a huge weight is off my shoulders now and I'm surfing alot and jogging some 6 to 8 km runs. My 13yr old drags me out for a 2 km run after dinner and my 21yr old drags me out for 3 to 5kms so I'm doing doubles and triples some days that amount to 11kms 😁

Anyway so how are you fullas 😉

Did my last full workout pre-half on Monday, 5x1200.  It went pretty well, though my initial speed is still lacking. Tapered the rest of the week, & yesterday I did a 2.5-mile tempo a couple of seconds/mile slower than the same run at the same point before my previous half.  Am feeling occasional tightness in my lungs & sinuses, which I assume is an allergy issue.  The allergist my son saw Friday said Albany has different allergens than our hometown, so maybe that’ll help.  Race is Saturday, March 2.

James - your intervals state sub 90.  How often and what is your tempo training?  I wondering if you're lacking this, to improve stamina.  Maybe look into this next cycle?

Piwi - hi.  Having a physical job plus marathon training plus being 50+ would be rather hard.

Piwi - he's back!! I do get it... having a physical job on top of running would be hard.  I'm kinda lucky that I have an office job and can sit on my bum much of the day.  Main thing is that you're having fun and it's great to see you back here.

Me - had my biggest week in a while, not intentional as I snuck in a run on Friday in case I couldn't get a babysitter on Saturday while wifey is away.  Did 2 workouts in pretty humid mid-morning conditions which were definitely tough, all good for the resilience though and I just need to survive one more week until wifey is home - this one should be easier with temps predicted to ease off a bit.

                  Mark - nice week.

My week was good.  On Thursday, after I had started my tempo, I was thinking "maybe this was meant to be intervals, I cannot remember".  Anyhow I carried on with the tempo - vaguely considered switching to long intervals but decided against.  Turns out it should have been intervals.

Seriously though no worries about the race and it’s great that you’re still coming over and will look forward to that!  I’m not sure yet whether I’ll race or jog Brighton as I picked up a niggle (piriformis syndrome) a couple of weeks ago and have had to cut back. I’ve been using a tennis ball to hit the trigger points which has helped, but haven’t been able to shake it off completely so will just be playing it by ear and see how things pan out.

Watson - Nice, I doubt I'll be running it and certainly not racing it but you never know.  I get back from 3 weeks in Cuba/Florida/Texas the Tuesday before the race.  If I'm not running I will try to get myself there to cheer on everyone I know doing it, inside and outside this thread...it is my favourite race though so might be hard to turn up as a spectator.

piwi - Physical work plus running would be very tough.  Sounds like you're having more fun and less frustration now which can't be a bad thing.

                        My week:

                        Monday         70 mins incl. 2x(2,4) intervals.  15.84km @ 4:39mins/km.  Interval pace:  3:47-4:01

                        Tuesday        Weights

                        Wednesday   70 mins incl. 1x10 mins, 1x5 mins HMP.  15.12km @ 4:43mins/km.  HMP: 4:06-4:09

                        Friday            Weights

                        Saturday        22km incl. 4km HMP.  22.1km @ 4:43mins/km.  HMP: 4:10, 4:14, 4:05, 4:07

                        Sunday          Weights

Monday was meant to be 3x(2,4)+2 but I hit the wall.  Wednesday was meant to be 2x10 mins but again hit the wall.  This hasn't really happened before even with the heat so it's a bit of a worry and blew my confidence.  Saturday was good to build it back up a bit, and it was a bit cooler.  It's very cold for February today so if my interval session tonight doesn't go well I will be very concerned.  I want to do 3x(2,2,4) which is a significant jump from 12 to 24 mins effort so perhaps I'll drop the last 4 mins and do 20.  I'm way behind where I've been speed wise this close to a race before.  I'm ahead with the base though.  I'm considering adjusting my goal for the race in 7 weeks - I don't want to attempt a potentially unrealistic pace and die in a ditch.  Given what happened last year at this race, I'm scarred enough to be very cautious.  I really don't want to experience something like that again.

Watson- nice week, we'll have to arrange a meet-up down there.

Steve- it might be tough, but try not to overthink it.  It almost sounds to me like you're psyching yourself out of it a bit and putting limits on yourself.  Start with the planned effort tonight with an open mind and just see how it goes.  You've put the work into building the platform, and there's still plenty of time to get the speed there.  If you're feeling good, just run it as planned.  If you're feeling a bit flat, then dial it back a little.

Mark - you're right, it is too early to be giving up on the original goal.  I do need to turn it round soon though so I'll truck through and hope the cooler weather helps.  I am very keen to have a good experience up there this year though and for that to happen it isn't A goal or bust.

Maybe we could all catch up on the Saturday afternoon before Christchurch, when there's no time constraints like post-race and no focus required like pre-race.  You guys can watch me have a beer...

Steve - don't worry about race pace just yet, you can think about that one week before the race. Your training results will dictate the pace.

DJ - nice one on that 5k!

Rune - hang in there! At least you’ll become a beastly swimmer. I know I can’t cross the swimming pool before depleting all my energy.

Jmac/Keen - PTs that diagnose things are also very rare around here. We are all lucky if we find a good one.

Piwi - hey there. good to see you. Could you please check my Strava feed, yesterday's run? Me and MickJogger need your expert advice...

me - lackluster week as I can't hit the desired paces even at the current low volume. My immune system seems to be down as I have a sore throat again. I'm seeing a throat doctor to figure out why I have these issues so often

Piwi, good to hear from you again. At least you are still running some. I can totally understand the lack of motivation, especially if you are busy and work is physical.

I got some good advice in the 3:20 thread about my injury, so the last few days I've been using a heat pad to promote blood flow in my upper hamstring/lower butt. I think it feels better. And my swimming is improving, although a video I took yesterday shows I'm doing all kinds of weird stuff in my stroke.
