By 10am on June 1 the rainfall to date in June was already higher than the monthly average so if it was today it may have rivalled the famous Taupo race but it's eased off now.  I just went out for a run and there is a lot of surface flooding so I expect it to be worse around Hagley Park and the river.

Just got my race pack.  Drive off Linwood Ave, onto the course along Avonside and Kilmore, today would have rivalled Taupo 2016.

Still can’t possibly be as wet as Taupo 2016 or Devonport 2016. Piwi will back me up on this.

It was snowing/sleeting during that race and the cold did a number on my leg muscles. 1st race I've run in a hat and gloves and left my thermals on underneath

Good luck guys. These races always provide memories good or bad....and a nice cold beer after will warm you up

Good luck lads, although you'll already be freezing at the start line.  It's very cold but not too windy and just the occasional shower.  About to head in, my first time ever as a supporter for this race...although the way I feel with my head cold today I'm okay with it!

1:14:25 official (10th overall), very pleased in really unhelpful conditions (cold, windy and wet with a lot of surface water in places). I had a good group to work with and wasn’t even really thinking about time until there was 2km to go and I realised a PB was on the cards and then I really knuckled down. I was so focused on pushing it to the max down the home straight I didn’t even see/hear Steve! Full RR to come (Piwi - the conditions were not far off Taupo 2016 levels of suckage).

As Steve said the finish of the half was a stunner with only 4 seconds between 1st and 2nd and they must’ve been giving it everything into the wind down the home straight (which is about 1km long!).

Great to catch up with Watson and Steve for a beer afterwards too!

My race did not go as well as Mark.  Unofficial 1:30:12.  Ran first 50% with the 1:30 pacer, then left them as they were a bit slow.

Thought I would go sub 1:30 with 5km to go.  But last 5km was into wind, and every one of those km's were 3-5 seconds too slow.

Conditions were tough.  Cold and quite windy.  From 40 minutes onwards there was some heavy consistent cold rain which saturated me.  Plus the later half had lots of puddles and detours into gravel stop bank due to flooding.

First time I have been cold straight after finishing the race.

Really impressed Mark managed to PR in those conditions.

It's hammering rain again right now.

Huge thanks to Mark for letting me us his air b'n'b shower.

Good to see Steve and Mark too.  It is a small world, as Steve was one year ahead of me at university post grad, and one of the people in Steve's year, Mark used to work with!

Watson great job and easy sub 1.30 on a nicer day.

Mark big gains to PB on a day like that and top 10 in a very competitive half is really good. Iain McDonald who finished 8th is a guy I run with alot. He and his twin are pretty quick sub 15 back in their 20s.

Steve nice support work with a cold

Edit - it was the 4km stretch that I was a little slow.  Ended up official 1:30:11 net.

Agree with Piwi re Mark, it was a really good time considering the conditions.  And the field is strong, so 10th is really good.

watson - somehow I missed you at the finish but was at the same spot I yelled at an oblivious Mark at when the clock hit 1:30.  Funny you mention the pacers being slow - they both came in at 1:31 and I was thinking "what the f**k"

Also should add that I agree with piwi that 1:30.11 in those conditions is worth 1:29 or better on a nice day.  So Mark getting a PB proves that he can still get to 1:13.xx (and beyond?)

The Pacers were good for the first 4km.  Then from 4.0-10.0km we were about 5s/km too slow, but the Pacers never seem to be worried.  My GPS at 10.55km was 45:0x, which meant 1:30 if GPS being exactly right.  That's when I left them as there was a fair chance that my GPS would end up 21.2-21.3km.
