GluteForce - IIRC you're also as tall as I am. If you watched the olympics you will notice how there's nobody our size running up front in the marathon, yet at lot of the guys in the 1500 are pretty close in size. Nick Willis is 1.83, Manangoi is 1.82, so is Tim Cheruyot.

If you go down to the track and do 4 laps you might surprise yourself that it does not suck as much, and it's still mostly aerobic so you don't need to squat 2x your own weight.

I wonder how fast Mark could go in the 1500, I truly believe that's likely his best distance.

I agree the olympics is full of silly sports and variations, afterwards they wonder why people stop following those sports and their athletes can't make a living

At least in the winter olympics you get to see the barbies foaming at the mouth while skiing uphill

Oh, and whenever I see a broadcast of Bobsled I remember Cool Runnings and them joking that whenever the Swiss would try to approach a girl they'd say "Eins, Zwei, Drei"

Mark-  When I saw them jogging clockwise around the track, I realized I probably shouldn't make any assumptions about their knowledge of track etiquette.  They did seem to be trying to stay out of the inside lane while jogging, but when they flopped down to exercise every hundred meters they spread out.

Mick-  It wasn't a 6-hour game, but a 3-hour game after 3 hours of pregame while my son got autographs and watched batting practice.  It's a little surprising to me that he's gotten into autographs at the same time as he's realized (at age 15) that a lot of the players, while very talented and hardworking, are in many ways just older kids.  At an offseason fan event we attended in January, he got to play a baseball video game with one of the minor league players, and the two of them seemed to be almost peers in terms of maturity.  For me, almost as big a deal as the game was that he drove in Atlanta highway traffic again without too much trouble.  He'll be driving on his own in six weeks, and that'll be a big step.

Mark - Killer job, mate! Congrats.

Watson - Bummer, man. I agree with Piwi that you should be able to comfortably go sub-90 with decent conditions. Sounds like you made the smart decision to leave the pacers.

Flavio - Best of luck on your 1500m goals! I look forward to seeing what that training is like.

James - Nice week. Any plans to get that hip checked out?

I'm happy that I've now gotten 3 solid weeks in a row, but found out that I might not be able to make one of the races I planned on this summer. That puts my next definite race all the way out in August, though on Friday I did find a neat nighttime trail 50k in the middle of July that looks interesting. Aside from the inevitable heat and humidity given the race location and timing, that is.

I went to the track today and I had the brilliant idea of trying out running with the Xero Prios. They've got 7mm of sole and zero drop. My calves are killing me now haha. I already got a different training, it looks like 1500m training is on. Faster stuff, longer recoveries.

I also have a 1500m time trial scheduled for next Thursday, that will be fun!

            Wind is not my friend.

Mark and Watson - Awesome races this past weekend.  Sounds like the race both of you put down in that weather was pretty amazing.

Flavio - Good luck with the 1500m training.  Enjoy those longer recoveries.  Haven't trained with the 1500m since college so I'm interested to see some of these workouts as well.

Starting a 20 week Daniels plan (self made though) this week so last week was just about getting in some miles.  School is ending so lots of ceremonies and mind-numbing requirements before the end of the year.

Flavio - Moving immediately to zero drop, especially minimalist as well, for speed work is certainly aggressive! I switched to zero drop (from 4mm) and had zero issues with my calves during a couple weeks of easy runs, so I thought I'd try a 5k in them. My calves were seriously sore for about 2 weeks afterwards, but I haven't had any issues since. The PR was worth it though!

Keen - nice week! I was talking to some runners on Saturday who do ultra's and one of them had done a 100k earlier this year.  One of the big challenges was getting the right nutrition throughout (chicken noodle soup was one popular solution).

Flavio/Keen - I remember how much my calves killed me after racing that 5000m in spikes, which have probably an effective negative drop given the spikes are all in the forefoot.  Most of my training is in 4mm drop shoes now.

                          CC4 - nice week.

JMac - welcome back!  Yeah we had some quality rain and wind complaining, so it was a different flavour to our usual hot weather complaining.

Steve - nice, you mentioned on Sun that you'd been eyeing that race again and it seemed to go pretty well for you last year even on slightly disrupted training.  There's a lot to be said for having a crack at smaller races, they just have a more relaxed vibe and you just don't get the crowds that you get at the bigger races.  Early August is a great time to race as long as the weather plays ball and I guess I'm always surprised there's not more races around that time of year.

JMac- OK it looks like we need to add some more races to the table, we've run out!!

I've got a few more coming up:

                            8/25, Auckland Road Race Champs (10k) - goal: 33:59

9/1, NZ Half Marathon Champs - goal TBC

9/15, NZ Road Race Champs (10k) - goal TBC

Assuming I qualify for the Auckland team, I'll set my NZ Road Race Champs goal after Auckland Champs (the course is the same for both this year as Auckland is hosting).

The half marathon goal is a bit trickier.  Sunday's race has definitely got me thinking about a) what my long-term HM goal should be and b) given I had no specific goal going into the race, whether having a time goal for a race even works for me (of my last 4 HM PB's, I actually only had a specific time goal for two).

I had a hockey coach who always used to talk about focusing on process, not outcome, which also seems pretty relevant given I focused hard on nailing the training over the past 7 weeks (and indeed all summer) - no doubt I trained like I was planning to run a PB.

                            3,000m: 9:07.7 (Nov-21) | 5,000m: 15:39 (Dec-19) | 10,000m: 32:34 (Mar-20)

Flavio nice week and congrats to your gf on a nice race even if it was not a PR good luck in the 1500 time trial.

I went to the PT today to be evaluated for my pulled groin/abdominal pain he gave me a few exercises and stretches to do and advised to hold off running until my follow up appointment in 3 weeks.  He did say I was ok to continue biking as long as it was not causing any pain.

It has now been since the first week in April that I have had a decent week of running that was follow by 7 weeks of minimal running (8-12 miles) complimented by some biking, and nothing at all last week and have decided to hold off this week as well.

Since the PT said it was ok to continue biking I will pick that up some next week again and focus mainly on the exercises and stretching.

I will spend some time over the next few weeks looking at my options for the fall and spring of next year.  Obviously I would like to run Boston 2020 if my qualifying time holds up and I can get in.  I think another BQ attempt for 2020 is out (I was thinking about a Sept. attempt to better my time).  I may end up just starting to build mileage slowly again and maybe run a HM at the end of the year.
