Getting back in to running atter 30yrs - Support and Training Plans needed. (Read 900 times)

I started running at the age of 56, other than kicking a soccer ball around in the back yard with my son when he was small I had really not done much in at least 30 years.

I read a lot of advice from more experienced runners, followed some of it, and took a 10k running clinic offered by a local running store, ran the race and really enjoyed it.

A few pointers based on my experience and mistakes I made:

    1) Don't time your runs- it leads to trying to go faster each time- bad idea.

    2) Do try to very gradually extend the distance, not increase the pace.

    3) Do give yourself a good rest if (when?) you get shin splints. The problem will gradually clear up.

Finally, don't take it too seriously at first, be patient, running is all about deferred gratification. The rewards of fitness, health and self esteem are great, being fitter than people 25 years younger feels good.

    PBs since age 60:  5k- 24:36, 10k - 47:17. Half Marathon- 1:42:41.

                                        10 miles (unofficial) 1:16:44.
