Walk on your heels around the house--it helped me.
I'd also recommend the shorter stride..I fought shin splints when I first started running until I took a Good Form Running Class and really focused on that 180 footfalls a minute. The shin splints for me were a result of heel striking. I am sure some of it is just a result of being a new runner.
