Running in Extreme Weather (Read 371 times)

sugnim

What's the most extreme weather you've ever run in?  The coldest, the hottest, the wettest, the windiest, etc.

For me, I've run in 0 degrees, but never below 0.  I've run in 92 degrees, and it was way worse than 0.  I've run in 2 blizzards, and have ran in freezing fog that frosted my hair white.

I know you guys have run in some crazy weather.  Let's hear about it!

    Thats rad

coldest was 25F at 4 in the morning. Not to cold compared to what you guys up north run in but hey, its coastal NC. The hottest was 101. heat index was a couple degrees higher.

Wow. I'm from the south so I haven't really experienced this, but great job!

Coldest: about -30F. (Lots of time in the 0 to -20F range)

Hottest: just above 80F. (70F is considered "hot" up here)

Windiest - probably "70mph stronger by the river" (I was by the river) (I do indoor workouts on those days anymore. Big ol' cottonwoods were really swaying in the breeze, but more importantly the wind was buffeting my body so it was hard to control legs and direction.) (30-40mph winds aren't that big a deal.)

Wettest: rain, sometimes heavy for most of 6-8+hrs, probably (don't remember exactly where it started or when it stopped, but I wore my bombproof raingear from about 5 hrs in until I reached the trailhead in about 13hrs. It had only been a light drizzle before then. It was forecast to be nasty, but the start was dry.

I don't have a lot of experience yet, but the coldest was today at -8F.  Last weekend we had 25mph winds.  That's the windiest for me.  The hottest was around 90F this past summer.  I have to agree that the bitter cold is way easier to tolerate while running than the heat.

There's some personal preference involved. I've run an ultra in about 97-100F, and I prefer that to cold.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

              Prince of Fatness

Coldest was somewhere between 0 and 5 degrees but luckily it was sunny with almost no wind.  This week has been worse than that, mid teens with sub zero windchills and no sun (I run late afternoon).

Hottest was around 103 just a couple of summers ago.

I am sure that I have run in winds 40 - 50 mph.

Rain, snow, you name it.  Snow is actually very enjoyable to run in.

                Not at it at all.

Last June 30 I did almost 5 miles on the afternoon of the hottest day ever in Athens, GA. The official high for the day was 109 degrees; my car thermometer said 107.

Why? I was curious to see what it would feel like. And I'm an idiot. But it wasn't that bad as long as I ran in the shade.

MTA: Coldest? Who knows. Not very cold. If it drops below freezing I call a whambulance and head for the treadmill.

                  Walk-Jogger

I went walking and standing around out in the woods outside of Duluth once when it was -46F to watch my sis-in-law mushing her sled dogs. That's the coldest temp I've ever been in. But I don't have much experience running in temperature extremes, as we don't get much really extreme weather in either direction. I will say that I have spent time running on the track here when it was 92 degrees, and found that by running shorter intervals it was very pleasant, but I tend to like warmer weather. I think I ran 800's that day and enjoyed it a lot. BUT, the humidity was down in the single digits too, so that makes a huge difference in comfort.

As far as wind goes, I went running uphill on a tree-lined rural road once when it was very windy, wind-speed unknown, and a large ponderosa pine tree blew down across the road a few seconds ahead of me smashing the guardrail. I haven't been so fond of running on really windy days since then. I was running out and back in the Snake River Canyon here once and a particularly big gust of headwind brought me to a complete standstill - I could not move forward into it. Probably 50-60 MPH, but that's just a guess. No trees down there, but the rocks start blowing around at those windspeeds...

Last summer the hottest I ran in was 93°F and high humidity, last weekend it was -3°F and windchill of -25°F.  Not sure which one was worse!

I'm in the Fargo ND area.

I haven't done much cold weather running...fuck that.

I have run well above 100° though.  I can tolerate that much better than, say 30°.  There's a reason your body takes on the "danger" response of goose bumps, hair standing up, and shivering.  Your body is saying something is not right.  Cold is just not right lol.

Coldest I've logged is -13F, with a "feels like" of -29F. Hottest was 98F, with heat index over 110F.

105 & 85%humidity once this summer. Actually, the whole damn week was above 100 degrees with high humidity but then who cares really? Was hot. I don't mind the heat, just go slow and take water.

-7 in the dark with 25mph north winds and snow. Mentally, getting out there in the cold is harder for me. I hate being cold and like sleep and running in the dark is getting old.

Tonight/morning is supposed to be worse than my coldest run so far. Yippie!

                              S Army Kettle run...

Did a 5K race one Saturday at -7F ...  Anything over 80deg and I turn into a major whiner.

The mental thing....definitely agree.  Right now it's ... 10deg with a 20mph wind outside.... not terrible, but this couch and blanket has a mighty grip on me.  .
