Running on a cruise ship? (Read 1234 times)

Consistently Slow

I wouldn't even do it for free.  I'd rather stay home.  I don't like crowds, cheezy entertainment, traveling on a strict schedule, cramped living spaces, viral hell that spreads easily on ships (they don't call the Noro virus "the cruise ship virus" for nothing), or the fact that they dump trash at sea.  Cruise ships really sound kinda like a level of Hell, to me.  To each his/her own.

      Thanks for the advice everyone.

I ended up not getting in the miles I would have liked, but still got some in and had a ton of other stuff going on so hopefully I didn't get too far off track.

We went through tropical storm Debby leaving port, so they had the open decks closed off so didn't get to run until a couple days into the cruise, and then we had other things going on that made it hard to work in any longer runs so I ended up just getting in a couple miles here and a couple miles there.

Did all my running on Deck 10 which was the open deck at the top of the ship.  It was right at a 1/4 mile around so pretty easy to keep track of the miles.  Very warm and humid, especially when I was trying to get the ports logged on my GPS after our shore excursions.

Here's the maps of jogs at each of the ports.

      Cozumel - http://www.runningahead.com/logs/17b912e64ad246e9bbe4a270366a97f6/workouts/ce8ea6ed870447fa82141a132d1b5fa2/map

(We tendered there so you have to zoom out quite a bit to see land)

      Roatan, Honduras - http://www.runningahead.com/logs/17b912e64ad246e9bbe4a270366a97f6/workouts/67813815e9714b1ca7c08d409fb71baf/map

(The ship started leaving as I was finishing that run)

      Grand Cayman - http://www.runningahead.com/logs/17b912e64ad246e9bbe4a270366a97f6/workouts/237bc78a2d5743b8b3df4bf22d646107/map

(Another place where we tendered, but we were alot closer to shore that time)

I only got in 2 runs when the ship was full blown moving and I just ended up entering them manually since the GPS track was all messed up from the ship moving.  I think I ended up with a 3:00 avg pace per mile on one of them.

Wasn't sure what to expect on my first cruise, my wife was the one that really wanted to go, but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit.  Now I have 5 more pounds to lose though!

I can't see your maps.  Could you make the cruise stop runs public?  Thanks!   Congrats on getting some runs in and I'm glad you enjoyed the cruise.

Whoops, sorry about that.  I think I fixed them now.

The sattelite views are the coolest I think.  I even ended up running on top of another cruise ship on the Cozumel sattelite view! Smile

I was on the Disney Magic Cruise in January.  I wanted to use my Garmin so that I could get a funky map while the ship was underway but the running track was on a deck with overhanging lifeboats and I couldn't get a signal.  I ran 10km before I quit due to boredom.

Best bet is to try running on the islands.

By the way, Disney's Castaway Key is always a fun place to run.

Yeah, you can tell from my maps that the GPS wasn't perfect going round and round the ship.  A few blips in there.  At the bow of the ship they had a deck above the one I was running on so it sometimes got a little off track going around the front.

My GPS watch had a harder time than my iPhone keeping up though, it varied over a 1/4 mile on a 2 mile jog and my iPhone was less than a 1/10th difference.
