Yay!!! I can't wait to see her at the games! BTW, where are the full results listed? I am not finding them anywhere. I want to see how my HS classmate fared...she didn't make it the last time she was in the trials.

It was pretty awesome. I was on Boylston Street for the beginning of the last lap and Magdalena Lewy Boulet still had a pretty big gap on Deena, who looked really comfortable when she went by in 2nd at that point. I talked to a friend who was at mile 24 as Deena was catching her and then when she came down the home stretch she was all alone, looking back to make sure there was nobody coming before she began her celebration. Lewey-Boulet was 2nd, Blake Russell was a comfortable 3rd. CLICK. Great atmosphere in town today. Getting psyched for tomorrow...

The atmosphere in and around Boston is AWESOME!!!! The trials today and THE MARATHON tomorrow!!!!! One of my daughters is working at Starbucks on Huntington Ave near Symphony Hall (and less near the Boston Marathon Expo) today. She has been seeing a *lot* of runners come through and the buzz is all about today's trials and tomorrow's race. Great time to be in and near Boston.

Zoomy, I know Wendi Ray (Zak). Actually competed in races with her several times. Did you go to Gibraltar High School up in Door County? This is where I am from. My folks live just a few miles from where Wendi grew up. My dad is a retired farmer and actually drove school bus for Gibraltar HS several years ago. I have been following Wendi also. The Green Bay Press Gazette had another article on her today. Did you see she was in this past months RUNNER'S WORLD magazine? Picture of her and hubby and little article. She qualified for trials with a 2:41 and change and her goal is/was to break 2:39. She felt she was trained to give it a shot today so obviously it wasn't her race today. But her plans are to go for it again in 2012. Small world!

Wow, it is a small world! I graduated with Wendi and Linden. Smile Wendi is and always has been such an inspiration to me...I don't have a fraction of her talent, but I'd like to think I have some of her determination. She's always worked so hard...and always been very kind and modest. Watching her run in HS was always such an amazing thing...she's a machine. When I saw how far down she was in the finishers I told my DH that she must have had a bad day--she was ranked 26 going in, right? I'm glad she's still going to go for the next one, though. I imagine in 4 years that she could get that much faster...definitely fun to follow her career. My mom was telling me Wendi was featured in RW--but I assume it's an issue that's not still on newstands? She just told me this a few days ago, unfortunately. I'll have to see if I can find a copy. Were you also a GHS grad? Looks like you would have been about 6 years ahead of me. Who is your dad...now that I see your last name it does ring a bell. Smile

My first two years of school were at Gibraltar and Sevastopol. My folks separated and I moved to Green Bay and graduated from Preble. They reconciled when I graduated HS. Nice! I worked at Greenwood many years through college and a bit after in mid/late 80s into 90s. My Dad's name is Eugene Charnetski and nicknamed Rooster when driving school bus (this was before your time). Live on corner of Hwy A and EE. BTW, my 1st cousin is Dennis Krishka who I am sure you know from him coaching BB. Curious of your maiden name. Do you get back home often? I do several races up there each year including a 10K in Jacksonport over Memorial Day.

Sure, I remember Mr. Krishka...for some reason I think he may have been a PE teacher when I was pretty little. My maiden name was Anderson...my dad is Bruce and my grandpa was Winfield. Just about everyone up that way seems to know where I fit in when I mention my grandpa. Smile I don't get home as often as I'd like--last was in DC last Summer with my son. Had considered doing the newish half-marathon in Pen. State Park in May, but since I'm doing the marathon in Milwaukee in Oct. that will be our trip to Cheeseland for '08. We're doing a road-trip to NC in Aug., so our travel budget is blown for much else. It really is a small world...I had seen that you were in GB from your profile and earlier posts, but never imagined that you were even more local than that. Speaking of, that new divided highway that's going all the way to Sturg. from GB is excellent--definitely makes that trip a bit speedier! Big grin

My maiden name was Anderson...my dad is Bruce and my grandpa was Winfield. Just about everyone up that way seems to know where I fit in when I mention my grandpa. Smile Doesn't ring a bell but I know some Andersons. I know John Anderson well and Debbie a bit when I was younger. I also worked with Tom Anderson (he is probably close to your age and graduated from Gibraltar) at Greenwood and played softball against him. I don't get home as often as I'd like--last was in DC last Summer with my son. Had considered doing the newish half-marathon in Pen. I run through the park regularly. We (my wifes family) own Larson Cottages in Ephraim so I am up there every weekend in summers helping out cleaning, yard work and the like. Takes away from my golf time. Sad It really is a small world...I had seen that you were in GB from your profile and earlier posts, but never imagined that you were even more local than that. I vaguely recall a Tom Anderson who was a few years older than me...I'm pretty sure he played baseball. I think he was maybe 3 years older than me, so he'd be about 38, maybe...? There was also a Tom Anderson 2 years younger than me--son of Ned Anderson, the retired Math teacher (Tom's older sister Rachel was a classmate of mine). The funny thing is that most of the Andersons up that way aren't related to most of the others. I had 3 Andersons in my class and none of us were related to each other. At one point there were something like 7 Andersons in the choir, which was maybe 50 kids. And I think at least 6 of us were in the show/jazz choir (a few siblings in that case), which was all of maybe 15-20 singers. We used to joke that we should rename the group "The Andersons." Big grin Neat little piece of trivia--I was the first person to receive a diploma on the stage of the auditorium at GHS--helps to have that A last name. Wendi was the last one in our class to be handed hers. Wink

I headed into Boston to watch the trials. The following is my recollection (which I think is accurate but feel free to correct it). I saw the field go by at about the one mile mark near the common. Magdalena had about a 20 - 30 second lead over the pack of about 100 runners, which was led by Okur at the time. I then drove to the Cambridge side at about the 4/5.5, 10/11.5, 16/17.5, and 22/23.5 mile mark and saw that Magdalena had extended the lead to about 2 minutes over the pack which was starting to break up at 4 and 5.5. Next time around at 10, magdalena still way out front but Deena had broken from the pack and Okur and Blake trying to stay with her, Okur was struggling. At 11.5, Blake holding 3rd, Okur fading and Zoile making a push. Next time around, no change in the front Zoile in 4th and Okur way back. (I work right near the Pru and I had briefly chatted with Coonts Friday morning while heading to work, so I was rooting for her but she didn't have it today.) Last time around, at 22, Deena is closing fast on Magdalena, someone had taken over 4th, Zoile in 5th. At 23.5, I watched Deena pass Magdalena who settled in behind her, Zoile still in 5th but she apparently she pushed on at the end and finished 4th. Besides the leaders, Joan Benoit received the most support. It was cool to watch.
