The Waltons aka Advanced Half Marathon Training Thread - 2022 edition (Read 444 times)

Since today is a rest day, I've nothing better to do than check the weather forecast for Monday.  The course is PR-flat, but the summer weather is never conducive to a PR.  Below is a history of my performance at this race over the years.  Notice any correlations?  For 2022, I'm showing the currently forecast temperature.

By comparison, my 4-mile PR, set earlier this year, was on a course with a decent sized hill in mile 1 and an uphill finish, but the temperature that day was good for me.

Side note: TOTALLY redeemed myself this morning over my terrible workout from two weeks ago and I'm a bit psyched about it.

Yes, it will be.  The contrabassoon doesn't have quite the oomph/volume of a tuba, especially for an outdoor concert, but it's better than having no bass part at all.

Ah this brings back some memories.  I played trombone back in high school.  We had a decent enough jazz band and that was a lot of fun.

Keen that workout was amazing. You did 8 reps around 3.35/km with 2.30 rest. It would be great to see you get that sub 18 sometime.

I'm afraid I know nothing about chess or musical instruments. My brother in England owns 2 big saxophone shops. I never got the musical genes. I have him by an hour in the marathon though

I played chess competitively in high school but I haven't really kept up since then.  Bit like trombone actually.

Piwi - bit like me and my brother!! He is a lawyer in NYC and works on a lot of $100m+ lawsuits.  But I have him by probably 30 minutes in the half haha.

Keen - that looks almost like a linear correlation!

A number of people decided they liked it more here and for various reasons had no interest in the other thread.  As Darkwave suggested, we now have "The Waltons" (this thread) and "The Competitive Jerks" (the other thread).  This was a reference to an old RWOL thread split I think, not calling anyone names, but I think it works.

I think a few will post in both, as has always been the case.  Totally up to people where they want to hang out.

Yes, it's about 2.5km to 3km to the start line from where I live.  I don't know exactly where the course will be.

I know you're worried about the wind - Upper Hutt is roughly half as windy as Wellington city on average.  Not that I go into town that much these days, but I used to go in most work-days and it will often be noticeable getting on/off the train and the wind difference.

Zebano - I know what you mean about marathon training.  All that work and bad weather on race day can ruin months of training.  At least with half marathons, I regularly schedule a second target 3 to 4 weeks after the target race so if something goes wrong on target race day, I can try again.  That said, it looks like I'll be running my 4th marathon next year.

Mark, Keen - If I calculate a trend line for the four July 4 races I've run in the past, then a forecast of 75º suggests a race time of 35:36 (the chart plot of the times & temps is remarkably close to a straight line, though there's no adjustment for improvement over the years due to training).  Maybe I can use the calculated time as a goal - see whether I can improve on the trend line formula result.

                            Watson - Welcome back.

Piwi - I know a little about music and chess, and you have me by a lot in marathons and half marathons.

I met my RP for an HM pace run today.  6 miles with the middle 3 at HM pace.  My previous two pace runs didn't go well as I was struggling to maintain the more aggressive target I had set for myself.  Today was the opposite - I was too fast.  In one sense it wasn't a good workout because I wasn't it the target range and therefore not necessarily getting the benefit intended by the training plan for this workout. On the other hand, it was a very good workout because it helped push aside the doubts that had been accumulating from previous workouts.  I've proven to myself that the pace is not unattainable - merely that I need more time spent finding the groove and getting used to the pace/effort.  Sometimes the mental boost is more important than the physical benefit of a workout.

Got in an early 6 miles today then took my sons into the City for a visit to my new office and some sightseeing.  Saw some neat stuff (including escalators in Macy's that are so old the treads are made of wood), and still got back by 1:00 to avoid the hottest part of the day.

And speaking of heat, I may get a reprieve on Monday - the temp forecast hasn't changed, but the forecast dew point has dropped from mid-60's to the low-50's, which is very welcome.
