Mark - Sounds like a sensitive approach - even without the extreme lack of racing, I think a mid-January race calls for a conservative approach.

I do think it's important to be sensitive when you are dealing with advanded half marathon training.

Dammit.  Brain was thinking sensible and conservative and the message got confused on the way to the keyboard.

arunnerd yeah I'm slowing building back up hopefully enough to run a few half this spring.

Keen nice week looks like you are getting your weekly mileage back up

          Thanks for the encouragement Steve

Zabano hope you get to feeling better soon

Flavio hope to see you getting bat to 30 again

Fred running with my son was absolutely the best, I started running again, when he joined XC team in middle school.  He is half way around the world now so no chance of talking him in to a run anymore.

Good luck with your race Mark

Got some snow and freezing rain in the forecast for Sunday not particularly looking forward to it, lows in the 20's I hate the cold...

My week is going well so far have about 15 miles in will try and hit my long run on Saturday and just a few to hit on Sunday in the snow and cold to keep at 30 for the week.

I need to actually make a weekly training plan and sign up for these races to give me a bit more motivation.

Good luck Mark, hopefully you find another strong runner who is willing to work together. Have you tried convincing the organizers to reverse the course so you can start out into the wind and finish with it at your back?

            Wind is not my friend.

Cfarr - Same weather expected here with more snow than freezing rain but both showing up.  Gotta do my LR on Saturday but it's supposed to be very cold so either way, it won't be comfortable.

Mark - Good luck with the race!

Z - Agreed the hill running can definitely be a skill.  I've always been awesome at uphills but downhills, I guess I'm too passive or scared of falling.  I think both are important and separate skills.  I also had never heard of that book before so let us know what you think?  Interesting concept but not interested enough to buy on my own yet.

Got some running in yesterday after a rough under the weather day on Wednesday.  25 WU, 6 x Hills (about 200 meters), 20 CD.  Good, strong, and relatively easy workout and a little longer than on the schedule due to the cut-short run the day before.

Mark - good luck with the race.

Zebano - Here's the elevation profile of a half I ran last year.  In the first few years of the race, before a runner took over as race director, the course was run in the opposite direction (right to left).  Your comment to Mark about changing direction made me think of this.

As to hill running being a skill, that's certainly true, but it's also an element of fitness.  You may know how to run hills, but if there's been no training on hills it's still harder than when you regularly run on them.

I ran 5 easy today with temps in the mid-40's.  We're supposed to be in the single digits both mornings this weekend (before the snow/ice/rain storm rolls in).  Maybe I'll try to renew my membership in the more-miles-than-degrees club.  I last did it by running 7 miles when it was 6º (or -14ºC, which is why the club doesn't work as well - or at least isn't as difficult - in metric measurements).

                5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 39:24 (11/21); 10k 50:32 (10/21); Half 1:50:46 (4/22)

Fred, that's an amazing oversight by the RD, or they just love watching people struggle up a hill at the end of a race like every single Ultra-race-director I've ever met (seriously, they're bad bad people ).

DW I like the way you think. I'm pretty sure I joined that club a couple of times this year.

cc4life07  you're the opposite of me, I love bombing downhills, I struggle on uphills, especially since I haven't been running them much lately as they aggravate my plantar fasciitis.

Caitlin - I think the worst we can expect in NZ is tide surges, so hopefully people stay out of the water.  We've had an awful summer for drownings and we don't need any more.  I feel for the people of Tonga, some amazing and terrifying footage.

I'm on the east coast of the north island in NZ which is a clear path to Tonga. I don't think we will get much impact as a volcanic eruption doesn't displace as much water as an underground earthquake. We have huge surf here today anyway from a cyclone far out to sea.
