Also - this scrolled across my facebook feed, and I thought of this group:

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

        That's hilarious - and I don't even watch Ozark.

We ARE a heartwarming holiday movie group, aren't we!

Congrats to our new Thread Overlord, may your reign be long lived (but capped at 12 months)!

My week was a bit light - curtailed slightly because of a family wedding in the weekend (and being a recovery week from last weekend's Half)

          2022 recap

          Current mileage: 4,076km / 2,532 miles

          Forecast mileage: ~4,175km / 2,594 miles

          Average run length: 13.5km / 8.4 miles (-0.6km vs. 2021)

          Average days run/week: 5.6 (equal to 2021)

          Time of day: 98% AM / 1% PM / 1% both

Kind of a weird year, this one.  Frustrating is probably the best word, although it certainly had some redeeming moments.  I was in really good form at the start of the year and at a couple of other points but lost a few weeks to sickness and got myself overtrained through August too, so for the most part I just couldn't quite line up form with goal races.  Won 2 decent size half marathons so that was cool, and a few 10k's as well although they were definitely more at the 'fun run' end of things.  Overall mileage will be down a touch on the last couple of years, due to no lockdowns (yay) and being sick (not yay).

          Goals:

          1. Have fun: mostly succeeded. DNS's aren't fun though.

          2. Don't get injured: didn't get injured, but did get sick a little too often

          3. Run at least one new race: done. Run Orewa 10k, Nelson HM.

          4. Beat my 10k road PB: fail. Done in by wind at National Road Champs but was probably overtrained for it anyways.

Highlight: winning the Omaha Half Marathon in a sprint finish.  Dude sat on my shoulder for 21km so I would've been furious if I hadn't won it

          Lowlight: getting sick too often

Looking ahead to 2023, I've got a few HMs to start the year and am then planning to tackle a trail run series through winter when there aren't that many other races on.  I've really enjoyed doing some LR's out in the forest and I'm looking forward to a different challenge.  2023 is likely to be a busy year on the work and family front so it'll just be a case of trying to get a good rhythm going training-wise and take the race opportunities when they arise.  The goals will probably end up being a lot more process-oriented than outcome-oriented, I think.

              Oh, thanks for asking!

It was warm - as it is every year! First race I've ever run in a hat, and I made sure to take a drink from a number of aid stations (not usually my habit). This is definitely NOT a PB event for me, the course and the time of year really just make it a fun time out.

This race is sponsored by Pak n Sav (discount supermarket) so the goody bags and usually packed with, well goodies. My 5-yr old was super stoked to find that even her 1.2km race got a number and a goody bag! (Seriously, that was real cool. I didn't think she'd even get a number, let alone a race pack. She was fizzing).

And yeah, it's a multi-laper. 2 for the Half and double that for the Full. Probably a good half dozen 180degree turns included in the course as well.

There's not a huge number of 'fast' runners, so the field spreads out pretty quickly and you end up running on your own a lot (I finished 8th with 1:32:56). I traded places a couple of times with the guy that finished 9th. In the second half of the second lap he was about 45secs ahead of me, but I slowly reeled him in. That was quite a satisfying moment

On a side note, Ms 5 ran the 1.2km. She ran without stopping, and only really looked back to look for me once. Afterwards she said that she had lots of energy left and could have run further! We definitely don't push her to run, but we do give her the option. My wife and I aren't sure weather she loves 'running' or just loves copying what her daddy does. Whichever way, it fills my heart to see her run

In the Marathon, Michael Voss (winner of Rotorua 2022) came down and smashed the course record with a 2:27:26. He would have been pretty much running on his lonesome.

Good old Michael Voss. He smashed out 55km at 4:16/km on trails in Rotorua yesterday... I don't know how he doesn't get broken!

That's awesome about your 5 year old (and huge win on the goody bags!!).  My daughter has been doing the 2k kids dash at a bunch of the events I run too.  Like yours I'm not sure she loves running or just enjoys doing events with me and the icecream afterwards but it's good fun all the same.  Had a proud moment back in March when she faceplanted on gravel halfway through the race and actually got upset when my wife suggested she walk for a bit - no, she was running the whole way to the finish.

Yeah, his work capacity is massive.  By day, he's a builder so it's not like he's sitting much outside his training.

2022 - my only aim was not be to injured, which I failed with a calf injury late April keeping me out for a few weeks.

I ran ZERO half marathons.  I had two lined up, one got Covid cancelled.  And the other got replaced with a different race due to road closures.

I had aimed for a 43km July ultra.  Which I didn't enter due to the calf injury.

I then switched to the Rotorua marathon which was a highlight (3:13).

Low light was the last 4 weeks with my cold / sore throat.  Although it probably came at a good time.

Mileage was pretty low at around 2100km / 1300 miles.

                    PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

                    40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

                    2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

                    2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

It's pretty crazy huh.  The running alone is a lot but combined with such a physical job as well.

                      That's a pretty long-running cold, I hope you're feeling better soon.

I set out in 2022 hoping to break 1:50 in a half marathon, targeting my fall races for that effort after using my spring halves to get closer (I ran a 1:50:47 in the spring, down from 1:52:38 the previous fall).  I managed to reach my goal with a 1:48:32 and along the way set new PRs at 5k, 4M, 5M, and 10k; and watched my son beat me (or my best times) at 1M, 5k, and 4M. I crossed 5 more races off the list of NJ halves to run; I've now done 25 and have 3 to go.  It looks like I'll fall 10 - 15 miles short of repeating last year's feat of going over 2,000 miles in a year, but that would just have been icing on the cake.  It's really been a great year of running for me.  Next year's focus will be half marathons on the spring and the New York City Marathon in the fall.

Back to now:  I've been so used to running in the cold that this morning's 55º (13C) humid weather actually felt like it was slowing me down on my 4-mile run.  The current forecast has our temp hitting 60º a bit later this morning, then plunging to 15º (-9C) - a drop of 45º (22C) in 10 hours.

                        5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
                        10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

Upcoming races: RunAPalooza (Asbury Park) HM, 4/6; Clinton Country Run 15k, 4/27

I ran 8 miles in just under 1:20:00 in weather that was 7º but felt like -9º with the wind (-14C/-23C).  That renews my membership in the more miles than degrees club.

                          5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
                          10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

My younger sister had some difficulty traveling yesterday.  She was flying LA to Baltimore, connecting through Las Vegas.  The Vegas-Baltimore flight ended up delayed about 4 hours - they had a plane, but no pilots.  But luckily she made it.

I was following the air traffic closely yesterday (to keep an eye on back-up options for her) - it was a mess out there.
