Fred - nice half. Was the plan to run it together?

Flavio - are the deadlifts aggravating the back at all? If so, maybe an alternate lift for a while? If not, then being conservative is fine.

Darkwave - how's the bank balance with all these specialists? Or is it mainly covered through insurance?

    CCOakley - nice week.

Mark - great news that you'll race at Red.

    Zebano - nice week.

Rune - why such small distances in your small week? Small weeks normally involve most days off.

    Keen - nice big week.

Steve - I cannot see Christchurch happening in April, sorry.

    PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

    40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

    2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

    2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

RP there are alot of deer here too but mainly out in the hills. Hunting is big over here.

I only have a Hero 3 but I'm a basic user. I also take it on my kayak so if I catch a big fish I have evidence before I release it. I probably wouldn't surf if I didn't live by the beach.

Steve I think we have another year of getting Omicron through the population and then we can go back to more normal living where covid will be considered just as another cold bug.

I'm in Christchurch next Thursday to Sunday.

Yay I ran a sub 20 in my run today 🙃

piwi - I could do my Sunday recovery at Hagley if that suits?  I think you're right, it could take a year more before our "leaders" adopt a sensible approach.  But I wouldn't count on it happening that soon....

Edit:  Damn, I just remembered I'm going to Stewart Island for Waitangi weekend.  I'm doing a 32km on Saturday but I'll have to do that from home as I need to get to the airport soon after.  Other option is the easy 12km on Friday but again I'll be doing that at home so I'm finished in time for the morning meeting.  I'm guessing you don't want to head out to Prebbleton at about 8am Friday?

Zebano - Wow, that's a super-generic, "hit all the possible search terms possible" product name if I've ever seen one. Too bad I can't actually check those out.

RP - Somehow I keep forgetting that your AO is much drier than mine - the humidity here is a major driver for the suckier conditions here.
Something fleece like that would likely be too warm. At this point I don't even know that temps will get that low again this winter.

Piwi - Nicely done on that sub-20 during the workout.

Kiwis - It sucks for you guys that you still have all of these restrictions. While I (unfortunately) doubt it'll happen, I do hope things ease up for all of you soon.

Keen https://www.hoorag.com/hoorag-clearance/sub-zero-colorado-flag-hoo-rag/ The whole thing isn't fleece. Just 8" so about a face full. Plus they don't expire in 3-900 days.

piwi oh man, the Hero 8 I have is cool. I can actually use the phone to see what the camera is pointing at and zoom. It's cool. Plus the image stability is awesome.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Piwi sub20 in a workout already? That time off didn't hurt you one bit! Congrat.

Yup, someone read about SEO and went to town. I've ordered 8 pairs of gloves over the past 3 winters and these are only 1 of 2 pair worth a darn. The other isn't nearly as warm but is nice down to ~25F and then under some mittens.

              Mother of Cats

                Wow i missed a LOT.

Darkwave how did the KT tape on the stomach go? Good idea as a reminder to keep the back straight. Sometimes the simplest things make the best results. The Chair of Death sounds hard because I did weight lifting so squatting always bent the back a certain amount. I literally came back to get an update on the medical issues. Bunch of circles. Today I Learned the definition of a Physiatrist. I actually had to read the word a few times to say it correctly and NOT say a combination of Physicitian and Physicist. Although, may seeing a Physicist would help. Doesn’t the epidural wear off, and become less effective at the same dose over time thus not solving the problem and being a band aid until the next “well lets try this”? The only experience I have with them is my wife having one during delivery.

Wow, that was a hell of a catch-up post.

                In response to questions:

                a) tape is helpful as a reminder to hold my core correctly.

                b) confirmed that I am allowed to drive to and/from the injection - I'm guessing it's a very small dose of corticosteroid (Betamethasone) and also guessing that they use much larger doses for child-birth epidurals.

                c) cost - most of my appointments have been covered by insurance, which means a $0 to $30 co-pay (payment) each time, with insurance covering the rest.    I have a $250 co-pay for each MRI, so that sucks.  And the ART guy is not covered by insurance, so I pay him out of pocket ($100-200 per visit).  So...I'm saving $ by not racing, but spending it all on healthcare stuff instead.

Treadmill quick change buttons - my treadmill has two programmable buttons on handles that extend out from the dashboard - really nice for interval runs - I've programmed the left for my recovery pace/incline and the right for my speed pace/incline - goes with the brakes being on the left and the gas pedal on the right.

Those handles each also have little dials that you can move with your thumb to adjust pace/incline - it's a little different from the standard treadmill set up of up/down butttons, but you get used to it really quick, and then you are hooked (or at least I am).

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Zeb/Keen thanks. I was planning on tempo at around 4.10/km but was hitting 4 min kms so decided to keep up some effort and get the sub 20.

Steve we fly out early Sunday anyway. The Friday could work well. Will confirm later next week.

                    That's a cracking tempo!

On Friday I do my weights/strength training from about 6:30am - 7:30am then eat and get ready to run which is why I won't be ready until so late...then I have a morning meeting at 9:15am to dial in to.  If you're able to work around my schedule that would be cool (you could even fix our alarm while you're here ).  If a gentle 12km at that time works for you that would be good.  Friday is the day I am extra careful about my "easy" pace when I have a 20 miler the next day.

Everyone - Been crazy busy getting my Mum's house ready to sell around work and running in the last (and next) few weeks so sorry for the drop ins of my weeks and now to whinge about another disrupted marathon training cycle, rather than participating properly.  I'm hoping to get back to normal at some point...

On that note, I have another backup plan.  If Christchurch is moved to June then I won't do Southern Lakes, but I will look at doing the Christchurch Motorway Half on February 27.  I'll probably only know 3 weeks before that so I doubt I can get into shape for a half PR attempt, but I will have a pretty big base to go for a low 1:30s time.  High chance of a hot day too.

The company I ran with actually have series that hit all states - yes I imagine the travel time is much longer in the western parts of the US.  I haven't looked into that yet - though I do plan to do another series with them in the future (not this year or next, but maybe 2024?)

Jeff 7 half marathons in 7 days in 7 states? SHEESH! Those must be some of the small East Coast states because the traveling logistics on the West Coast would be killer.

RP - That hoorag design is a bit different than I had envisioned, and might work quite well. Especially for that price. And Colorado is better than California. Too bad they don't have a similar one for Oklahoma.

DWave - I always appreciate treadmill discussions, even when mis-posted. Eventually I'll upgrade to one with such fancy controls, but that will likely be after my current one gives up the ghost and there are no remaining parts for repair.

Good that you can drive to/from the procedure. That has to make logistics much easier. Here's hoping it results in some positive results.

Keen Yeah they're not much more than a thin piece of fabric. It is what I wear for all my runs. They hold a fair amount of sweat and since they claim to be SPF 30 I don't seem to get skin cancer on my forehead.

dwave this place moves fast, and being "less than motivated" to participate in society has drawbacks. Even when the society is online.

Fred - nice half. Was the plan to run it together?

Thanks.  As we hadn't agreed on a pace beforehand, I can't say we had a plan but as my RP waited for me a couple of times it only seemed polite to do the same for him.  I wasn't going all out on this one or looking for a PR as my target races are in March and April.

Zebano - Thanks, I hope I'll get there (sub-1:50) in the fall.  My March race is a bit hilly for a PR, but you never know.  The April race will be flat, but on the shore where adverse winds are always a risk.  Whatever happens will happen.  I do feel lucky to be able to run with my younger son these days.

SteveChCh - Thanks for your confidence.

Keen - Sounds like a trail would be a good place to run your oldest if she likes jumping around during runs.

It is quite busy here.  I do my best to keep up and read it all, but I don't comment on things when I have nothing to add (such as the travails about races being held - or not held - halfway around the globe from me, though it's interesting to read about).

I met up with my RP for 9 miles in 13º, including 6 at HM pace.  The run went pretty well, which is nice coming 4 days after the half.  We're expecting a snowstorm here, 4" - 6" where I live, so I may have to juggle my schedule a bit to get my miles in.

Steve - ah, the contingency planning continues, I know the feeling.  Hope everything is under control with the house.

Piwi - lol with the sneaky sub-20!

Rune - I like the cold but... that's just nuts.

Fred - yeah it is pretty busy on here, I can't keep up that well either!  But just participate as much as you like.  It's good to have some new faces on here.

Had my booster yesterday and felt pretty crap this morning.  Seems to be improving pretty quickly though.  Glad I timed it to line up with my rest day.  TBH I'm pretty sure we need a better plan though, it's not sustainable to expect people to get boosters every 4-6 months.  Maybe it'll become like the flu vaccine ultimately... where there's one each year covering the prevalent strains which you can choose to get (or not).
