Mark/Flavio thanks and I'm still searching for birthday shoe bargains.

Steve $4500 for the cat.....I would probably draw the line before that, does that make me mean

Hashiritai - are you running the Vic Uni x-country relays?  Which oddly are a very, very long way from Vic Uni.  I'm not sure whether I'll race it yet.

Mark, Steve, Fred and Flavio - good luck for your races.

Steve - I really don't think Southern Lakes can count as a PR.  But given you're $4500 worse off, I'll allow it.

      Darkwave - nice race.

      PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

      40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

      2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

      2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

Well, Mum is worse off but she just sold a house so...

I think the Southern Lakes PR discussion has been done to death...for me it would a PR as in my fastest time but not a PB as in my best race.  Let's just hope I don't get it after having Covid so the arguments can be avoided

Oh boy the discussion has started already and the race hasn't even happened!  This ought to be amusing.

In all seriousness though, I still find it weird that some on these boards get so obsessed with other people's PRs.  None of the runners I know locally from my club or other clubs carry on like that at all.

Personally I'd really like to see Steve run a kickass race!  He can do what he likes with it after that.

Corey I thought you were racing a 5k on vacation? Am I crazy? Anyway glad it went well.

That was probably me - I ran the Invest In Yourself 5K on Sunday while in Omaha (Nebraska, not New Zealand) for the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting.  Just got back and will have a RR up in a day or two, but I finished in 20:04, much better than expected.  And for those of you complaining about wind, well, let's just say that the forecast for the day or two before the race included the words "possible tornado."

            Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

It's an interesting question, and for me it kind of works a different way.  I'm in no danger of ever winning a race and I run events over a wide geographical area so I never know whom I'm competing against in my AG, so other than my PR, what do I use to judge my performance?  Certainly, placement in AG is a benchmark, but during the race I don't know whether a runner just ahead of me is in my AG or not, so I can't really make strategic decisions during the race (other than how hard to chase my son ).  That said, the PR can't always be a benchmark either as the nature of the course and the conditions on the day of the race have a big impact.  I suppose when I settle down and start running the same races year after year I'll have better performance standards for myself.  The other standard is just how well I feel I did based on subjective criteria about how I think the race went for me and what my level of effort was relative to my time run.

Over time, I can judge my results/rate of improvement by looking at where I'm placing in races relative to the field, my gender, and my AG.  When I started racing, it was rare for me to get into the top half of finishers, then I started being in the middle third, and now I'm starting to finish in the top quarter every so often.  I suppose those are good benchmarks too, but they're not as quick and easy to communicate online as PRs.  I'm not arguing against what you're saying, Mark, but trying to put out another perspective.

Speaking of conditions, the forecast for Sunday looks decent in terms of temperature, staying in a narrow range between 48º and 52º (9-11C) during the race thanks to some cloudiness, but the wind could be up to 15mph (25kph) by the end.  The humidity could be an issue for me as I've not yet had time to acclimate to the more humid weather we get here in NJ in the warmer months.

James that's an excellent time. I know you have had alot of injury niggles so this must feel good.

I pulled the trigger on some Adios 6 shoes.  I got 15% off courtesy of joining the online club .  Good tempo shoes apparently.

The Adios used to be the marathon racing shoe before super shoes.

My 2 marathons were run in Nike Lunaracers which nowadays would be considered just a training tempo shoe.

ahh yes I confused the two of you. 20:04, in windy conditions while not running for a few days before? That's pretty stellar. Also, please try to contain your tornados to Nebraska, we don't need any more of that nonsense here in Iowa.

Piwi - I would also not pay $4500 for the most evil of animals to live. I think DW loves the adios 6.

Zeb we have 4 cats  . One of ours returned in bad shape from a week away. We let the vet hydrate her but didn't take up their offers of dental work and ultrasounds.....she is still fine 6 months later.

Yeah my dream shoe is the Endorphin Speeds but couldn't find them cheap enough. Similar do anything shoe to the Adios.

Heh, I wouldn’t own a cat in the first place but would definitely pay $4500 if I had a sick dog. I figure cat lovers feel the same way and she’s a week away from getting a big chunk of cash in her bank account so it’s an easier decision.

Caitlin - I checked your Strava and I've noticed something. Your weeks are ups and downs, that could be part of the reason for injuries. Do you reckon you could settle for a middle ground and keep the weekly mileage roughly the same from week to week? I reckon that could help with preventing injuries in the long term.

Of course Mark is the baseline for this as the only time he ever got injured was when he dropped a weight on his foot and he never catches colds either (if you can run through it it does not count as a cold). But Mark is not human, so we can't use him as an example
