Torn Hip Labrum - advice, recovery and experiences (Read 1147 times)

@Madison - No, this was after the confirmation of a labral tear through MRI.

@Oski - My hip specialist said that from his standpoint, there was nothing else that he could do. I have an appointment with the sport medicine doctor who ordered my MRI in the first place, but I don't really know what else there is to tell him, as nothing really has changed since I last saw him (which was about a year ago).

I had two thoughts.   1 - if you've only had an x-ray of the low back, an MRI may be a good idea.  Many of the disc issues don't show up on an x-ray.  That way you can rule that out as a contributor.  Then 2-  see if your dr can recommend someone for a second opinion on the labrum causing your issue.    While I know that people can have asymptomatic labrum tears, given that you ARE having hip pain, it seems like that should be looked at closely as the cause.

Good luck, it really sucks to be left in limbo!

Can you join the facebook group Oski linked in the first post?  I'm pretty sure some people there have had successful surgeries without getting relief from injections.  There's a lot of different experiences in that group!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I honestly feel so much better when I can talk to other people who have been through similar situations, and I really appreciate the fast responses as well. I will definitely seek a second opinion and request some more tests. I will also check out the facebook group, thank you for mentioning that, Madison.

It's a bit tough here in Canada though, to find specialists in the hip field. In the city where I live, there is really only one "go to guy" for hip stuff, and he was the one conducting the diagnostic tests before. Regardless, I will seek more.

          Thanks again!

You're welcome!  I know there are others from Canada in the facebook group, so hopefully you can get some good information there.  I've heard that a lot of people end up having to wait a while for surgery in Canada, so maybe you can get yourself on a list now even if you don't wind up deciding to do it in the long run.

Be sure to stop back and let us know how you feel and what you end up deciding to do!

                Hi Everyone!!

I wanted to introduce myself to the forum because while I am not a successful scope story, I remember when I was first looking for information about FAI and labral tears I could not find much, so now that I am a veteran at this hip stuff, I always want to try and help people avoid a similar fate to mine.  You can read about my story here: http://sarahhipstory.blogspot.com/

I also have found this facebook group a life saver: https://www.facebook.com/groups/579136442138901/

If anyone has any questions please feel free to message me or talk here.  These surgeries can be so frustrating and difficult so I have found connecting with people who have the same issues the best medicine Smile  Good Luck everyone!!

I'm starting to get some annoying stiffness in the general hip area, especially when sitting for long periods (aka M-F).  It's sort of more like where I was a few weeks back when seeing my chiro despite not running at all now, and I didn't bike for the past several days.  More areas of the hip and glutes seem to just be tight.

I called my hip specialist, Dr. Kelly, to mention this and they've moved my appointment up from May 9 to April 30 (ug, still so far but that's the closest they could do to get me to see him).  At least it's a week less wait.  In the meantime, I'll keep hoping my rest is fixing the stress fracture.

I'm still hoping that will heal and all will be fine and the labrum will either not be a bad tear or become asymptomatic as they sometimes are.  Obviously I'd like to avoid surgery but still be able to run competitively.  It could be (and I'm not sure where I got this idea, from reading something somewhere?) that the labrum tear caused the stress fracture in the first place.  So, that would suck and would probably mean it needs to be addressed.

Guess I'll keep lifting weights and not doing any real cardio.  On the bright side, I can now bang out close to 100 pushups (could do 15 when I started) and I'm working on more and more pullups.  Overall shoulders/chest/back are becoming more defined lol.  Gotta look for a bright side.

It wouldn't surprise me if the labrum tear contributed to the sfx.   A labrum tear reduces the amount of impact resistance the hip joint has (loss of synovial fluid, I think?) so it would stand to reason that you'd be dealing with more of a stress to the joint.  But that's just a guess on my part!

Glad (well, not so glad, but you know what I mean) that we have some new folks to join us in our misery!

I've finally stopped being lazy and gotten around to typing up some parts of my recovery and stuff to my blog.  I'm going to try and chronicle everything, since I've found other people's blogs to be very helpful in comparing where I am and what I can expect in the future.  So far this is all I have, but I'll just keep updating until I get caught up to where I am now.

Stitched come out 4/16 and then back to the dr the week after. My schedule sucks trying to see him, so i have to see someone else to get the stitches removed.

I feel good and i still don't have any real pain. I haven't had meds since 4/3. My shoulders do hurt from being on crutches though. Driving hasn't been bad either.

i would really like to try and ride the stationary bike for a few minutes as it seems like some dr's say it can be used.

A stationary bike on no resistance is supposed to be a good idea after surgery.  Keeps the hip moving to prevent scar tissue build up, etc.

Nice, i was looking for any activity possible. I'll start with about 5 minutes and build slowly from there.

Remember that it's not for exercise, but only for your range of motion.  I started at 5 minutes and eventually was doing (3) 10 minute sessions a day.   It felt really good to get my legs moving, even if it wasn't very strenuous.  Be sure your seat is up high enough that you're not going past 90 degrees too.

I just got back from PT.  They really did a number on me today.  The lady clipped this belt (looked like a seat belt) around my leg and around her at the same time and did all sorts of weird pulling and pushing to try and increase my ROM.  I'm still having pain bringing my knee toward my chest when I am on my back, but apparently that's normal.  I'm now doing mini squats with a band around my knees and then walking sideways and forward.  I also got permission to walk a mile outside and then slowly increase to 30 minutes.
