Running Problem

Problem Child

MY guess is people don't use them because they're too cool, or they think "I'm not going that fast." Maybe they think it will weigh them down and make running harder with the extra weight, or it will get in the way and they'll accidentally stop the treadmill.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Thank you JT.  I don't know if you have run Hartford before?  I have numerous friends that have and they all liked it.  I have never been able to as we have a XC invite not far from there on the same day or I would be tempted.

Otter: I didn't realize you were in the same area as me; maybe we will meet at a race at some point. I've run Hartford 5 times and I concur with your friend's assessment; it's a great race. I think my son probably ran in the XC meet you are talking about; the last time I ran Hartford in 2019 he had a meet the same day. We went straight to the course after the marathon to watch his race. It was a huge invitational.

Marby: 10 kg lost in 10 weeks is great progress!

OMR: Wind has finally subsided around here, so you probably have 30 mph winds this week

Keen: Nice week, you really churn out the mileage. I'm envious of all the owls you see. I only rarely see them around here but it's a real treat when it happens. The main animals on my runs are deer, turkeys, black bears and the occasional fox.

Pepperjack: Sorry about your friend, that's very sad news.

Weather: Nice week; that 16 x 400 workout looks brutal. Sorry to hear the half was cancelled. But focusing on 5k/10k sounds like a good plan. You should be able to get under 16 for 5k.

Laura: Nice week; you snuck in a lot of quality there. Good luck on the TT this weekend!  I am also debating about a 2 mile TT this weekend if the weather looks good. 30 hours of zoom?? That sounds much more painful than the 5k TT!  BTW, do you want the Syracuse half on the table?

        Running Problem And Mikey,

Yeah, the whole thing looked pretty bad but I was in my house fortunately.  It was funny.  The table and the lamp survived!  Edited to add: It's been a long time since I have looked cool.

JT, yeah , we go to Wickham every year.  It has to be the same one.  My girls team loves the hilly course and the view of Hartford from there.   We will be there next year for sure.  It used to be my state XC meet course when I grew up in Connecticut and I also proposed to my wife there.  I am in Rhode Island now.

My friend Matt has won Hartford a couple of times and I have a few other friends that have done very well there.  I really wish I could do it but it's always on the same Saturday in October.

Yeah, maybe. I have to get a lot faster to be motivated to race again!

        Laura

JT: yeahhh I think I'll be more sore physically from the zooming than the 5k! Kick ass on the TT if you do one, hopefully weather cooperates!  right now I'm looking at temps in mid 30s, wind kicked up a bit but we will see what it actually ends up being. Can't complain too bad since normally it would be a foot of snow on the track this time of year. 🤷‍♀️

And yes let's add the cuse half (technically called lake effect half if we wanna get specific) to the table. Will give me some more motivation /accountability in coming weeks

OMR: Wind has finally subsided around here, so you probably have 30 mph winds this week

Very true.  Rain/freezing rain Wednesday night, then snow and wind yesterday.  Parts of ND apparently had wind gusts up to 90mph; more like 40-50mph here.

JT - This is certainly the time of year that I see more owls than others. I'm not sure if it's the weather/temperature or a function of sunlight (or lack thereof) compared to summer months. I'm a big fan of raptors in general, but owls are my favorites.
I've only seen a couple wild foxes in my entire life - they're incredibly rare around here. And seeing black bears would certainly be a treat as well.

Folks, I am 55 years young today!  My wife’s very creative Zumba teacher baked me a lovely tasty birthday cake and I couldn’t resist posing with my 1st place Eastbourne Trackstar Marathon 2019 medal.  Why not???

Mikkey-That is a great cake,I done a track marathon once and strangely enjoyed it,despite most thinking it is crazy.

OMR-I hate running in the wind,it is so demoralising putting the effort in and barely moving.

Just trying to gently increase the mileage weekly,35m this week is my highest for 16 weeks, touch wood I seem to be over the worst of the PF now so hoping to slowly increase over the next few weeks.

Mikkey:  Happy birthday, and +1 on the awesomeness of that cake and how young you look (my hair started turning gray in my early 40s).

Ian:  Congrats on the mileage bump and lessening PF.  Totally agree on the wind.

                      My week:

                      S:  5.3M @ 8:29

M:  6M @ 8:31, plus an elliptical hill simulation workout

                      T:  7.2M @ 8:20

                      W:  7.4M @ 8:07

T:  Rest (rain, freezing rain, snow, lots of wind + a 13-hour work day)

                      F:  Elliptical Hill workout (20min w/u, 8 x 0:45 seconds hard with lots of resistance, 10min c/d)

                      S:  11.8M @ 8:28

Total:  37.7M + the elliptical workouts.  The elliptical workouts definitely seem to be a positive regarding leg strength, so I'm going to ask the coach about incorporating them into my marathon plan, which starts this week.

Mikkey: Happy Birthday! I agree with the others that you look much younger than 55! Enjoy the cake, it looks delicious.

Ian: Good to hear things are progressing well. Nice mileage.

OMR: I'd say you were justified in taking Thursday off. Sounds like a good idea to keep with the elliptical work since it is clicking for you. BTW, I spoke too soon about the wind abating around here; last night it started up again in force. On today's run it was a mix of being overheated when with the wind and freezing when against it.

My week: I attempted a 2 mile TT yesterday on the track. There had been rain all morning and wind, but late morning the rain turned to more of a mist and the wind died down so I went for it. Unfortunately the mental toughness was not there and I bailed at 5 laps/2000m. I would have had to run under 4:08 for the remaining 1219 meters and that just was not in the cards. I may give it another attempt during my marathon training; I almost feel like I'll have a better shot when my endurance is more at peak, even if the short speed component is not there. Today is 12 weeks out from my first marathon option so time to switch to "official" marathon training.

Good week for me.  Really feeling the difference with that chunk of weight off and seeing it in my easy pace and heart rate. parkrun events returned this week in my state after being cancelled since March. I decided to run it hard as a test of where I’m at and because it’s been such a long time since we’ve had any events. It was great to see friends, family and colleagues were also running and have the community back together. The course start is about 2k from home so able to jog there as a warmup. I ran the same hard in training about 5 weeks ago in 23:40. I knew I’d made good progress but not how much, thought maybe 22:30 shape but went out and ran 22:10. Legs felt strong, but lungs were screaming. Time to start doing something resembling a workout after all this easy running, 20 week plan is a go.
