Mother of Cats
dwave Do you think ANY of the overall feel could be from diet or even last years injuries? Even mental state can affect running pace. Trust me...I'm the WORST at letting the mental state determine pace. Could "Feel" also change on an actual race day vs training LIKE a race day? 70 miles...NICE week. As always, you seem to have it all figured out as far as back up races. Have you ever run Myrtle beach? I know you've run Grandmas and had good things to say about it.
So....if the question is: "have you lost some fitness from last year's injuries and nutritional problems" - the answer is unquestionably yes . I also think my reduced overall volume due to limited pool hours, plus the fact that I've had to change my leg strength work since I'm not going to the gym right now, are all coming into play. I used to do 2 hour pool-runs on most of my non-running days - 50 minutes isn't quite the same load. And I'm not doing heavy barbell work since I don't have access to a power cage at home.
If the question is: "are you subconsciously protecting yourself and being too cautious in your effort" - I'd say the answer is no. Looking at heart rate (how I double check my perceived effort) - my HR was at the top end for where I wanted it to be for this workout. And yesterday was not an easy run. I think that if I had run any harder yesterday I would have dug a hole.
Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.
And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.
JHudak Man...those are some IMPRESSIVE 2020, and overall, PRs. Sub 19 5K!!! what happened with the 3:36 marathon? I guess on paper I'd expect you to have run a sub 3 already, or at least something faster than a 3:36. Are you going to increase the mileage for the half marathon, or have you started training and 30 miles is where you'll want to be?
RP: Thanks. The 3:36 marathon was in March last year and I had a bunch of really inconsistent training leading up to it. Everything else was off of really solid training. I'm just getting back into training, hopefully my mileage will be around 60-70 MPW leading up to the half.
DW: My long run yesterday morning was at Hains as well. We may have ran right by each other. I saw you mentioned you might be running the Myrtle Beach marathon. I ran the full there last year, I thought it was a really good race, but there were two things I'd note if you end up running the race. You've probably heard this, but the wind between the large hotels on the beach front segment was particularly brutal. Once you get out of the downtown area it isn't nearly as bad because there are not hotels to create the "wind tunnel" effect. Second, in the area where the half turns off, the full, half and 5k all share the same route for about a block. A friend of mine was briefly stuck behind a group of 5k participants walking side by side and taking up much of the road. He was 1:29 at the half, to give you an idea of approximately when the congestion occurs. Your best bet would probably be to stay as far a possible to the right side of the road.
DW: as usual your training is looking great!
JT: welcome back to marathon training Solid looking tempo!
JHudak: welcome back!
Ian: sounds like a tough week. You'll be back soon enough!
RP: Nice consistent looking week for you!
My week: Don't think I posted last week, but I did get back up to around 78 miles with 2Q days to include a speed (6x1K) and a nice 1600m repeat session of 7x1600. This week I finally got back over 80 for the first time since late last fall before my last HM and capped it off with a new 5K PR on Saturday running a 16:13.6 based on the net clock time. Went out hard in the first mile in 5:06 (even too fast with mid 4:50's for the first 800 meters lol), then faded slightly in the 2nd with a 5:11 and then held on for dear life in mile 3 with another 5:11 before my final kick. Unfortunately, had no one to run with from the gun but that is how it goes in these smaller local races right now. Also a friend told me that he saw me not running the tangents very well around gentle bends as he could tell I was running more of the curves than necessary - had 3.16 versus 3.13 or so for many others! I think I'm getting somewhat close to be in sub 16 shape so those kind of small race deviations are going to matter quite a bit! Also kind of weird (for me) is that I haven't really run longer than 13.1 miles in about two months now as most of my mileage has been coming from 10-12 mile days. Figure if I find a half later this spring then the LR's will make a return eventually For now just kind of enjoying running very easy on most days and then trying to hammer 1-2 days per week.

DWave - That LR - even if you aren't completely happy with it - wow.
I'm also WAY far onto the introvert side of the spectrum. The next group workout is tomorrow, and we'll see how it goes. It is a bit nice (and out of character for me) to actually be around other people who share a common interest.
RP - Solid week. Get those miles while you can!
Weather - Nice couple of weeks.
I'm really liking where my training is settling in right now. My wife has started running with some other women a couple times per week (one of which lives right down the road) so I'm hitting the treadmill a time or two per week now so I can start my run andbe home with the kiddos if she isn't back from her run.

Hey all...just been running basic easy miles a few long runs since the beginning of the year.
So far in 2021:
My car was shot up in the cross fire of a car jacking gone wrong in front of my house (we were in bed it was of a neighbor's nephew who had a conceal carry and got into gun fight...luckily no deaths) and was considered totaled amd written off by my insurance.
My mentor, confirmation sponsor in thr Catholic Church and guy who lead me down a path to working in homeless services for over a decade passed away.
We have scheduled appointments to find out if my daughter will need heart surgery (she is 7 months).
And I have not had more than 2 hours of sleep in a row yet....
And my Packers lost. So.....ugh
So....I'll be here once training ramps up in March but things are just basic base miles for now. Our jobs are safe and we will get through this...but...it's been a year 25 days in.
Nice to see people are getting in miles. See you all more soon.

Thanks for the tips on Myrtle Beach - sounds very much like Shamrock, which has a similar windy section on the boardwalk. For some reason Flybys is not showing our mutual runs, but I'm guessing based on the timing that we did indeed pass at some point. I was the short woman wearing a black jacket and black tights, and probably completely unimpressive or memorable
Weatherboy - 80 miles a week without a long run is some impressive mileage. I agree that for what you are focusing on, and at that mileage, you really don't need a long run right now.
CK - good week for you. I laughed at the comment about kids sitting in cars for 20 minutes.
DPS - I am sorry - that is a LOT to handle. I hope you get good news on your daughter.

Flybys got turned off because of a privacy setting change. You can re-enable it but you both need to.
Dan -- Good luck, that's an awful year (except for the Packers). Praying for your daughter.

Thanks - yes, I've enabled mine. (double checked this morning). And when I look at JHudak's Strava report for his run, I see "fly bys" as a viewing option, so he has it enabled. And yet we don't sync.
My hunch is that it's because I'm not a paying subscriber of Strava.

RIP Milkman
Just got the email about Boston on October 11. That is about 10 degrees warmer on average than the dates in April, with temps in general in the low 60s (unless they're starting very early). Think that's a pass for me. Plus, Mikkey is running London and Cal has disappeared, so the incentive was gone anyway!

Honestly, I think the weather is an equal crapshoot to April. With the advantage that you'll have trained through the summer instead of the winter.
I don't care about the weather, I'm just ready to run my first Boston. Hopefully it happens. I qualified November of 2018, so it's been a while.

Just to be a bit of a weather nerd here (Weatherboy, correct me where wrong). I think we are hit with a bit of a recency bias with Boston that the last few races were crap. This past year, when it wasn't run, was absolutely perfect. If you look at historical data from Boston, the difference in extremes are about the same in October vs. April. Even daily chance of rain is pretty similar.
For those who haven't run it, agreed with Ace, who cares, just go run it. This was more for those of us contemplating a full slate of marathons that have run Boston in the past.

Problem Child
Honestly, I don't think it will happen for me. Either my time won't be good enough with their reduced field, or COVID 19 is going to be too big of a concern to allow 20,000 people to travel to Boston for a parade. I'm going to guess it's 50% of normal capacity and that's a prayer. 25,000 people just show up to Boston for the weekend to breath heavy through 7 or 8 towns and encourage locals to stand within six feet of people for more than 15 minutes just doesn't even seem possible until the EPA FULLY approves a vaccine and not just emergency where you have to sit around for 15 minutes to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction.
I also expect a LOT of people who didn't run 2020 and qualified for it to just decide they want to apply and see what happens. So for the 25,000 spots open they'll probably have 100,000 apply and the cutoff will be a BQ-7:30.
Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Meanwhile...the weather for Fall/Winter marathons in California is uncharacteristically biased towards marathon PR success. Probably because the West Coast is better than the East Coast.
