Food for exercise (Read 108 times)

morphex

    Hello.

I was wondering if any of you have suggestions for food in periods where training is difficult - lack of energy, having the cold etc.

I've found that strength exercise with a lot longer pauses work when I have a cold.

Is there a point in having a snickers before or during an exercise session? Strength and/or running/cycling/swimming.

I had a snickers and some chocolate just before exercising today, with a cold and with longer pauses, and found I felt strong and was able to do fewer exercises with more sets and reps.

I am addicted to the Jelly Belly Sport Beans with the caffeine in them. They are so much better than GU or other gels because I feel like I'm eating candy. If I am not starving before my morning runs at 5am, I just eat a pack of the jelly beans with a large glass of orange juice.

Sometimes a couple pieces of toast with jelly works if I am hungry but I have to take alka-seltzer or Tums proactively to make sure my stomach doesn't start churning up while running. I don't have to worry about food in my stomach churning if I am only lifting weights at the gym but it is rare for me to not do at least some cardio at the gym after I lift.

You take the tums right before your run?

hmm..looking into jelly belly sport beans...

I used to use the sport jelly beans during marathons.  Kept them loose in a side pocket so they were easy to get to.  Eat one whenever I felt like it.  Well not 'eat', just pop it in my mouth till it was gone. It felt comforting to have one in my mouth and you got a little continuos boost from the caffeine/sugar. Probably more of a mental boost than anything else but I sure liked em!

Some glucose is absorbed through the mouth:

On the trip that kind of sparked my interest in triathlons, I rode a bike with a wagon on the way home, hauling about 150 kilos in total, for 70 kilometres.

That day I ate a solid breakfast, and drank a couple of litres of fluid, and some coffee

Total for that day I drank 7-8 litres of orange juice, apple juice and mineral water, and I think I peed a little once during the trip.

Juice is easy and fast to digest, and contains some carbohydrates, and the mineral water has 5 important minerals.

That's interesting. As a point of reference, i checked a hydration chart and it recommends for a 140 pound runner (would probably include the load you are hauling) in 70 degree Farenheit heat, should drink 4.6 ounces of fluids per mile.

                          That is... a lot.

I, a 140 pound runner, in no way need 30+ ounces of fluid for a 7 mile run in 70 degree heat. That's about an hour of running for me, and 10-20 ounces max. More than that and my stomach hurts. If I tried to keep up 4.6 ounces/mile in a longer ultra, I'd maybe get hyponatremia.

There is always a point in having a snickers...even if you aren’t exercising or lacking in energy.

                            Why? Because they are delish.

It goes along with that story that it was one of the hottest days of the year, 35 degrees celsius (95 F).
