Have discovered that yes,I can run my first ultra with bugger all training.

Finished the 66km in 7:22. Didn't really hit the black demons until a bit of nasty gravel road at 50km so pretty happy.

Bit sore now though, can only get worse tomorrow.

Pukekura - Just WOW. Insert emoticons here. You're making my 3 miler today look pretty wimpy. 10 miles tomorrow.

Emurphy - hello from Canada! I'm looking forward to reading about your training.

Puke - That's just an awesome performance given your training!  Way to go.

              Emurph - Welcome aboard.

I had a breakthrough run this morning.  As you all know I've been doing my long runs on my bike recently to limit the stress on my recovering knees.  Today I decided I needed to start doing some real long runs if I have any hope of completing my marathon in 2 months.  I decided on a 13 miler for my first test (my recent long run is 7).  It was not what I would call speedy but I completed it with absolutely no problems and I felt strong the whole way!

Three cheers for Puke and an awesome run!

Same goes for Jeff - quite a large jump in LR distance with an excellent outcome - very happy for you!

Hi Ayola, EM, PerfesserR, drphibes, and any other lurkers...the bunny awaits

This morning I ran my last 14-mile LR before the half in two weeks. I also switched over to a new pair of shoes a couple days ago. The old ones had around 700 miles on them and suddenly last week the bottom of the left shoe started peeling off in one spot and I wore though into the white at the heel - no wonder that achilles has been feeling a little tight - NO cushion left in the shoe! I'd been thinking they might be nearing retirement age; I guess I just needed confirmation - hah!

                  Imminent Catastrophe

Over 20 miles last week, the first one of those since May. Yay! That included an 8-miler and a local 5k on 9/11 which was a lot of fun and because it was a very small race I got 2nd in age group. But the best thing is that so far the ankle is holding up. I might catch that bunny yet.

Happy--700 miles on your shoes? Bad Happy! Bad Happy!

Yeah, I might just agree with you at this point, although it's not unusual for my shoes to get there.  Anyhooo, after tonight's run...well you can read my notes in my log rather than listen to me cry here. Could be from wearing shoes too long, could be from mileage increase coupled with tempo runs, whatevah! crashin and burnin too close to the race date. I'm just going to reel it in, figure out a new plan for the next week and a half and hope to feel strong and rarin' to go on 9/25.

Hey, great to hear about your high mileage week! especially including an 8-miler! and a 5K race with hardware!! That is truly the way to stage a comeback.

                      Imminent Catastrophe

And now for some unsolicited advice...

You're 10 days out from a half marathon and showing signs of overtraining. You have two choices:

                        1) Stick with your training plan.

                        2) Take it easy, forget the tempo runs and just do easy maintenance.

What's the worst that could happen?

                        1) Injury. Disappointment. Crash and burn. Be out for weeks or months. (For details, check my log).

                        2) Maybe lose a minute or two, but probably not. You will not lose any fitness in 10 days and tempo runs so close to the race will really not do you any good at all.

"reel it in" sounds like a great plan!

OK, my latest setback was not the result of overtraining, it was my first run after a long layoff, but I've been guilty of overtraining plenty of times and your last log entry sounds pretty familiar. OTOH, some of my best runs have been after taking a week or two off.

Thanks for the "unsolicited advice Russ. I could just cry reading it (which just proves the point about overtraining). At this point, I would love to just "2) Take it easy, forget the tempo runs and just do easy maintenance" - and will do. That's what my gut feeling is telling me to do. I've spent the past year trying to "run by feel" as the book says, going by how my body is responding to the demands I'm giving it - this would be the worst time to ignore that. Thanks for the moral support - I appreciate it.

Jeff and Perfesser - glad you're getting back into it!

Happy - 700 miles on one pair - OY! Anyhoo, you are well trained and I second the Perfesser's opinion that some easy running is in order before the race. You will be bursting at the seams on race day, and that's probably good.

Ten miler last saturday was great. I did set the Garmin to beep if I went faster than 10:30m/m (which I tend to do coming down a long hill) and I managed to run slow n steady yet still get slightly faster on each mile, instead of the usual crash and burn at the last hill/ mile. I'm going to use the same technique for my tempo run tomorrow. Working on even pacing.

                            Happy wednesday, A

Yoga night for me - no running today.

                              Have a good one, everyone!

10 1/2 miles done on a truly spectacular day in St. Paul, my longest since May. We're not downwind of those fires and the sky was so blue with a chilly breeze, a truly memorable run and the ankle felt fine. You know that T-shirt "Running is my Prozac"? I haven't ever taken Prozac but after the last few months' problems this run left me with a real buzz all day. Happy, I expect that by race day you'll be feeling great and rarin' to go!

                                Bunny, you are dead meat!
