well, pukekura, I'm headed your way in March. Just registered for the Tarwera 100k! What the hell was I thinking?

What the hell was I thinking?
Sweet.
You were thinking how the hell am I going to sell this to my wife as an anniversary present
Was going to go over to Rotorua and run some of the course today, but opted for Maungatautari mountain 10 minutes down the road.
Did 10km in 2 hours, it was really really tough going up hill, but great downhill. Very muddy and slippery.

I am biased, but it is very difficult not to enjoy yourself in NZ
Imminent Catastrophe
Sweet. You were thinking how the hell am I going to sell this to my wife as an anniversary present
Wow, you're like a mind-reader!
8+ miles on the tough Gahuti today at a blazing pace of almost 15 minutes/mile. That won't cut it at Tarawera but the Gahuti is a very technical trail. Anyway it was a good hard run.

I will have to look that race up in NZ. My sister lives near Nelson and I am always looking for an excuse (besides visiting my sister) to get to NZ from Alaska. Very expensive!
Tomorrow am running a "Mile in her Shoes" Race and am thinking of wearing my red Danskos for the mile. Benefit for our local womens shelter. Sad we have to have one of those!
I only managed 18 of my intended 22 today. Bonked hard after that. Not sure what caused it. It was warmer today than it has been and I was trying a bit of a new fueling/hydration plan. Might have been the combination. I had to revise my fueling plan that was working well based off studying the marathon course and where my wife could hand me a bottle. I had planned to not carry my bottle belt on this marathon attempt but I am seriously reconsidering.
That's rough Jeff - especially because it's hard to puzzle out sometimes the Why of things. Could be not enough fuel or hydration soon enough; could be not enough sleep, or not enough carb loading...so hard to know sometimes...and I'm speaking of course from No Experience at marathon training, but still...I was reading an article recently about this ...which leads me to conclude: hard to puzzle out sometimes.
For me personally, I wouldn't go without my own water belt (with electrolyte drink) even for a 12K.
I would for a 10K, but not anything over an hour.
MTA: The article is in Running Times Nov issue and is called "Strong to the Finish" The article is not available online; so if you want me to mail it to you, Jeff, just PM me your address.I'd be glad to send it along.
Don't make excuses for why you can't get it done.
Focus on all the reasons why you must make it happen.
A little RR -2:23 for the PEI half marathon. My second best time.
I'm pretty happy with that considering how undertrained I am. Charlottetown is a great small town with lovely brick buildings and good pubs - gotta go back without a race the next day! Husband was rewarded for doing all of the driving by bumping into an old college friend - we had a great chat about old and new times the night before the race which really was relaxing. I can get quite anxious before a race.
The course can definitely be divided into 2.
0-15K: Gorgeous flat to slightly uphill run by the waterfront, through suburbs, and on a groomed trail (not so sore this morning). Consistent mile pace - feeling great!
15-21K: Three sharp steep downhills/ uphills - I was warned by the local running store guy. Ran up the first hill, walked up two and three and lost 3 minutes. Also, running close to traffic along University Avenue was unappealing - although we were well protected by local military volunteers. Along the wide boulevard we were unprotected from the wind which was brutal. Once we were back downtown in the shelter of buildings I could resume pace (for the last mile) pretty easily.
Lessons learned: I gave up alot of mileage this year to get in shape - weight training on my own and with a trainer. I feel more stronger, and more healthy than last year, but this does not translate into a faster me. More miles makes for a better runner. I also started practicing the tempo run (at HM pace) which helped, as I tend to start out too fast and then blow up. I'm going to add more of that along with some 10K pace running.
Challenges for next year: more hill running! more consistent mileage! Realize every run in Nova Scotia will be windy. Perhaps there's a local wind tunnel I could train in.
I'm feeling good this morning, going for a waddle down to the park and a leisurely coffee - I took the morning off from the office. Packing up the Garmin until next year. Still looking for 2:20 and maybe 2:15...
Welcome back Trey and happy Monday all, A
Recalculating...
Congratulations on an excellent finish time for your HM, Ayola! I think you did terrific, considering the hills and wind in the second half of the race. You finished strong, so that's a confidence builder too.
Thanks Happy! I'm taking it easy this week - in-laws are in town. Making a plan for november and december...

Good hard 6-miler today with Daisy. It's the first time this fall it was cool enough to take her on a long run. She's very happy!
In other dog news, Taz is the cover boy for the Atlanta Doberman Pinscher Rescue calendar!
He's GORGEOUS!!!

Thanks all. Yes, I'm on the upswing. I had a conference late last week through yesterday...just played a lot of golf. I'm chalking that up to cross training...back to running today, feeling strong. This time I will not, will not, will not ignore core and cross training. Anyway - yes, I just moved a few months ago. Still adjusting to some degree but feeling more like home everyday.

Russ - yes, I am actually thinking about Burning River. I mean, it's right here so why not. Ill try and tackle Green Jewel 50K in March first. I think Burning River has a 50 mile option. If so, I'm in for sure. You?
Modified - the hardest part of my split was leaving Hobbes and Daisy (other dog, Hobbes is the profile pic) behind. I'm still heart broken about that.
San Francisco - 7/29/12
Warrior Dash Ohio II - 8/26/12
Chicago - 10/7/12
Trey, Burning River is a possibility although heat and humidity are not my buddies. I still have unfinished business at Tahoe Rim Trail in July so I'll have to think about it.
Sorry about Hobbes and Daisy, that must be very difficult.

Oh. I forgot about Tahoe Rim. So many places to run....I still have to tackle that triple!
Daisy is a beauty! Cover girl material for sure. We sure do love our dogs and when Nitro has embedded into my life totally, I may change my profile picture from Rusty and neighbor dog Chester (who just passed away last week)
Ran 5 today with Nitro pulling me all the way. Good core work out.
Tahoe trail sounds great! Have a great Friday
