I have a coach now and he's trying to kill me.

Is your coach an ultrarunner too?

Use your momentum...keep going.  You know you can make it.

    Imminent Catastrophe

Yes, he's Sean Meissner, a fellow Maniac and top-level ultra runner, he's won some big races (Tahoe) and is up there among the top finishers when he races.

For a long time I thought it was self-indulgent for a mid-packer to hire a coach but I'm devoting so much time and energy to this hobby and thought I could do better--train smarter, not harder (although I'm doing both now) and maybe run a little faster without getting all obsessive and ruining the enjoyment of it.

So now I'm doing real workouts instead of "junk miles" and actually enjoying it more than before because most runs have a purpose. He seems to push me just enough so I still have fun but get a good workout and based on my 50k last Sunday it's helping. We'll see how I do at Mountain Mist and Tarawera.

Sorry guys, I was out of it because of my monthly bad headaches...

Jeff: so sorry about your wife. Hope she gets thru it without being too sick all the time. Did the doc give a prognosis? Or shouldn't I ask.. don't answer that if you don't want to.

Ayola: Yikes on the job. How's the job market in Halifax? I've had some changes in my job over the last few months that I really don't like, but at least I have a job.

Got my first 5 kilometer of the year in... first one since September actually. On the TM, but I still feel pretty pleased with myself.

We go to see the specialist tomorrow and we will find out much more then.  She will be going straight to a bone marrow transplant this time by the sounds of it but we don't know the specifics just yet.  She has Hodgkins Lymphoma which traditionally has a very favorable prognosis and we seem to have caught it fairly early.

Jeff: I'm so glad there's an immediate plan of action!

Dutchie: I just did 30 minutes on the treadmill - I've forgotten how boring it is (for me) I'm going to need new music and better sports highlights on the TV. Same day run and weight training tired me right out, and its my new Thursday plan - how do you do it?

Perfesser: the coaching thing is interesting - looking forward to reading more about it. I think I learned alot from my trainer. It would be interesting to try again with someone who was more running focused the next time budget and schedule allows.

              Good luck Jeff and ayola.

I agree, the treadmill is excruciating for more than 30 minutes. I got in an 8-mile tempo yesterday because of thunderstorms and never would have done that if it weren't assigned by my coach. And watched episode 2 of "Prohibition" so I learned something as well!

I just wanted to say Good Luck to Jeff, his wife, and Ayola for tomorrow. I'll be thinking of all of you.

Dutchie, on the TM or on the road - it's still Running. Good progress!

I'm going to try running tomorrow, I think. My foot is better each day, but I don't want to risk reinjury.

Hard to believe I haven't run since last Saturday! I'm afraid to look at the Bunny Chart!

Use your momentum...keep going.  You know you can make it.

Not much to report from the doctor visit today.  The bone marrow biopsy came back positive so that wasn't the best news and the doctor still hasn't made up his mind about the course of action yet.  We are stuck between a self donated bone marrow transplant and a donor transplant.  The specialist doctor wants to see the slides of the biopsies before he makes up his mind.  They also want to test my wife's sister for a donor match to help make up their mind.  It's going to be about a week before we know the plan better.

Thanks for all the well wishes everybody.  I guess we will just be trying to keep things normal for as long as we can.  I'll be starting with a nice long run tomorrow.  I'm considering splitting my 20 miler into two 10 milers just to try something different.  Any input on whether this changes the impact of the training effect?

I don't know, but I'm sure the answer is somewhere on this site! Do you mean two 10's the same day, as in a "double"? There is supposed to be a benefit to that, but it may not be the same benefit as doing it all in one go...depends on what you're after I suppose.

Thanks for the update too. We'll keep you and your family in our thoughts.

Easy 5 miles this morning, unusually warm (3*C), the foot of snow that fell yesterday is gone...

Happy: I was cleaning up old e-mail and was reminded about Yamuna body rolling (google brings it right up). When I lived in Maine my yoga instructor taught it. What happens is the students roll around on hard inflated balls to loosen up muscles - its pretty hilarious looking - I had to keep my eyes closed in class most of the time, but very relaxing. Also there's a foot stretching technique that goes along with it. I wonder if this is something that's offered in your area? Maybe it could be helpful...

                      Happy saturday, A

Thanks for the tip, Ayola. I will look into that. It sounds like something I would really benefit from right about now. After not running for a week, I'm having more muscle/tendon pains and tightness like IT band, pyriformis, low back, and lower leg tendons - just about everything hurts - and I haven't even been running. Grrr.  This "not running" thing is not for sissies!

I ran 3 miles on the TM last night as a test of my left arch healing. It went alright and didn't make it worse as of this morning. So I'll give it another go today.

We're a bit chilly here today. The temp is in the low 30's, 18F with the windchill factored in. We are supposed to get some snow down to 200 feet elevation. We'll see. So far this has been "the winter that wasn't."

ETA:  How did your interview go, Ayola?

Ran 6 miles on the TM just now....slow and flat...went okay...I'll be sticking with that for now I think.

                        Imminent Catastrophe

Jeff, ayola, and Happy, I sure hope all the issues turn out OK!

I had a first today--I won a race! The 12 Hours of Hostelity, a 12-hour trail run on a 1k loop trail. It was much harder than I expected, very hilly and very slippery with mud, my slowest ultra ever but I ended up with 46.15 miles and won by 10k. OK, it was a very small race, 13 runners, but still, I got a plaque and won a pair of Solomon Trail shoes. I SO wanted to quit after 50k, then 40 miles, but the RD told me I was in the lead and #2 was 3k behind and gaining. It would have been really lame to quit when I'm in first place so I had to keep going although I was a Dead Man Walking at that point. That's the first, and undoubtedly the last, time I will ever win anything. It was one of the hardest things I've done, to keep going when I was so exhausted.

I know that 71 laps on a 1k loop sounds dreadful but it wasn't as bad as it seems, you're never more than 1 km from an aid station, the terrain was constantly varying, and I got a few hours running at night with a headlamp which was good experience.

MTA: It's a DUMASS plaque (Dahlonega UltraMarathon ASSociation)!

Congratulations on your Win, Russ! You obviously had to work hard for it; and so did your competitors. I think it's an amazing accomplishment, especially so soon after running 34 miles last weekend.  I hope the shoes you won were in your size.Clown

Russ - Great job, I don't care how many people were in the race, that's just awesome.  You don't suppose the name on the plaque has any significance do you?

I watched the (TV production of) the US Olympic marathon trials on Saturday - I have to look up this guy who I missed in previous Olympics Abdi Abdi- his enthusiasm was great although he almost got caught by Ritzenhein. I was inspired to finish up week one of my new plan even though it was -12*C run on Sunday - I think that's my low temp limit - yowzah.

I had a pretty good interview yesterday and hopefully another later this week.

Perfesser: You are a winner! I'm having a hard time imaging running or moving for 12 hours... wow
