3650 Miles in the Hurtlocker

What if? There is only one way to know. (Read 36 times)

"I would not be able to bet, without any further proof to the contrary, that you would be able to take the training. Not everyone can. There is only one way to know. And a single trial is not proof. A gradual buildup, and many tries will be telling. I, for one, am not certain I can take it anymore. Yet, I will try. I will try. And break. A dozen times if need be. But what if you could? huh? What then? What if you could take the miles? Run the hills? Do a little speed, and so forth? Maybe you can. Even then, what would happen? You would improve, or break. And there are no guarantees for any of us that we have not already reached the absolute pinnacle of what we could achieve. We may not get any better than we already are. And what then? Is the answer, "Failure is possible, and therefore I will not strive."? No. The answer is, "Improvement is possible, and therefore I will strive." Injury is likely. Disappointment? A necessity. Satisfaction? Never. Complacency? Never heard of it. Comfort? be gone. Hunger? get used to it. Failure? the norm. And this we willingly accept, if we are to be anything more than what we are now. And even then, our paltry success will be utterly meaningless. There is no purpose, and no meaning. Yet, it is in the journey and the struggle that we live. That we are. That we increase ourselves and learn the meaning. The meaning."

Good stuff even after 4 years. My calf was injured for most of January, but I think it's healed.  I plan on finding out "What if?" this year.

    Feeling the growl again

Sounds eerily familiar, even though I don't recall reading that post.

Sounds like the reason my marathon PR sucks compared to what I went through for it, but it was one hell of a ride and though I have tried I cannot conjure regret.

though I can't run YET I plan on putting this to the test as far as rowing goes! It will be interesting to see how this years training works with next years racing!

I didn't see the original posting but glad you resurrected it. Very apt for us struggling with our running.

What I appreciate about the struggle is the continuation of the purposeful training in the face of countless failures. But when it falls together for that one great race, it all makes sense and the world is a right joyous place.

          Failure is not an option.
