Perhaps the extra heat generated by the extra metabolic activity necessary to move? The reason 50F is a bad temp to stand outside in shorts and a T-shirt but perfect for running a marathon in shorts and a singlet.

I've seen ambulant vs wheelchair used in the description of different paralympic type events. Heat would then probably be some kind of preliminary or qualifying race. Maybe. I dunno.
