April 2015 Runs and Workouts (Read 14 times)

justrundan

Welcome to a new month friends!

Currently in Orlando visiting sister & other family for one more day, then over to Fort Myers to see old friends until returning to WI on Saturday.  I did get in a 10 miler here yesterday morning, today just went for a short walk with DW.  Weather is SO beautiful, sunny and in the 80's.  Yesterday we took sister and nephew on an air boat ride on one of the many very shallow lakes here, saw several gators and a bald eagle, numerous herons and a crane.  Fun was had by all.  And of course, the requisite overeating.

I did just manage to squeeze over the 100 mi mark for March with the long run yesterday.  4 weeks from this Saturday is the Door County HM, so I need to get serious here pretty soon.

Good to see you all getting the miles in, way to go!

Wednesday, 4/1... 5 mile easy recovery run on the railtrail for me today.   The footing was surprisingly good once I got a 1/2 mile into the run, the melting and re-freezing actually smoothed things out quite a bit.     145 running miles for me in March...

Dan... sounds like you're enjoying your time with family in Florida, especially the airboat ride...lol   Run when you can and enjoy the rest of your stay...

justrundan  Hope you have a good vacation. Would be fun on the boat.

NH Runner 10 min. miles is a nice pace for 12 miles outside in the spring.

I do pilates/yoga stretches on occasion, but am lazy about them, until I have some problem.

Art in AZ It must be hard to get in the runs when it is so hot early in the year. Not much time to get used to it warming up.

az2mntrail Sounds like you are having a good time!  Good luck on your race!

        9 miles on the track.

We had some rain last night,  then snow this morning, so it was quite slippery out.  Supposed to melt later, though.

Thursday, 4/2... 5 mile road run today, through the local covered bridge and back.    Very happy, today's quicker pace suggests I might actually be making progress... 9:26, 8:43, 8:42, 8:32 and 8:41.

Chantilly... thanks!    I'm just trying different approaches lately to see what works best for recovery, that's why the yoga link.     I tend to get tight in the lower back and some of the stretches in that link actually worked...lol    I'm with you though, I tend to be lazy about any of it 'til problems crop up...lol    Snow, then rain, don't you just love Spring...?    Nice run today!

Art... today's run in shorts and shirt is probably as close as I'll get to running Shangri La Ranch style...    Amazing how it goes, isn't it, now it's our turn to read about the heat out West from you and Ray...lol    Nice run yesterday!

          Chantilly75

NH Runner Nice run through the covered bridge. Is it still in use for cars or is it too narrow?

I took an arthritis pill this morning, so only ran 6 miles, as I don't think it is safe to do hard workouts while taking medication. Instead, I usually try to deal with it by icy hot creams, massage, etc. This may be my last year for running a FM.  I'll see how it goes.

              Hi Guys!

You've been running some mighty impressive miles!

AZ - good luck on that 10k tomorrow!

Dan and Rich - Congratulations on your 100 miles in March!! I almost did 49   Rich - I can't believe you're running in shorts and a shirt already! you're such a good Dog daddy! I can't stand running with mine!!

Dan - I know that HM is right around the corner. I have one, too except that I changed mine to a full thinking I had plenty of time.

Chantilly - So sorry you were ill and glad to see you're back!

Art - you re running in 90+ degree weather already? Hard to imagine! I'm looking at places to retire and Phoenix was high on my list.

Ray - Sorry to hear of your aches and pains! When is your race? Good luck if it's this weekend!! I'm coming your way in October for the Humboldt Redwoods Marathon. Yay!! Watch it rain!

Had a tooth infection and didn't know if through January. Two rounds of azithromycin didn't knock it out but we didn't know that until the dentist tried pulling the tooth. Two weeks later I was still in a lot of pain so she started me on something stronger. That did the trick and then I get infections everywhere else because that's how my body works. So, I've been licking wounds and worried about pushing too hard, concerned that it would only make my thyroidism act up. I'm finally better, I think. Completed a HM last weekend and wasn't last. Several people took longer than me to finish. My "running" is dismal but I'm fighting back. Was scheduled to run the Flying Pig 5/3 as a HM but switched to a full and am now not ready. One good thing about having raced a bunch is that I no longer worry too much about these things. I'll try for the full and if I'm sure I can't make it I'll try to switch at the last minute. The HM is a lousy half-sized medal on plain cotton ribbon (instead of printed satin), hardly worthy of the six miles of hills required to finish the half. Oh, yeah, I have another full on May 17th so I switched to again try to qualify for MManiacs (two within 16 days) and wear a cute skirt with my MM shirt like Chantilly.  That was the initial reason I switched. And that's my story.

              Happy and safe runs, all!!

Friday, 4/3... no running for me today, I've been pushing pretty hard lately and my legs are complaining.    I did ride the trike for a half hour though and got in some upper body work.     Hopefully I'll be running again tomorrow...

Chantilly... there's not much to say except good luck with your arthritis.     You do really well for someone who's not at 100%      The covered bridge is useable year 'round.    It's single lane and limited in allowable weight, but the snow never gets inside.

mKayc... there haven't been many days lately when the weather's been suitable for running in shorts and a shirt, so I take advantage every chance I get.     You're still plugging away and penciling in a pretty tough race schedule, good for you!

Rich - someone said my problem is that I'm racing too much and training too little and he was absolutely right but by the time I came around to his way of thinking, I'd filled this year and next w races. So???

Anyway, just finished ice bath after 8 mi ay gym, 2 hr. 10 min. Closed the ace down. Still can't feel my butt. Watching UK v WI. Barkley really loves KY and its an easy bet since team hasn't lost but they may have to really play well tonight. Whoa, maybe not. Good luck my WI fan friends. Can't say I'm a KY fan but they just keep overpowering and outplaying. Would like to have seen UC or Xavier go further. So it goes. Score is even. Game is 3 min old. AZ, I'm pretending we're both watching and eating pretzels.

The rest of the time in FL was great!  Back from FL late yesterday afternoon, in time to get some work done and then watch the Badgers win their semifinal game.  Go Bucky!

5 miles late this afternoon, windy but 56, so it was OK in shorts and long sleeve shirt.  Nice to be outside.

May Kay- you need to be a procrastinator like me when it comes to signing up for races!

Rich- hope you got in your run(s) this weekend.  You have been putting in the miles, good for you.

Chantilly- I'm lazy about the stretches too.  Need to be more proactive on those!    Nice miles.

                    Everyone have nice weeks.

Monday, 4/6... backtracking to Saturday, I ended up running 8 miles on the roads.    Weather was lousy, 40 degrees with wind and gusts to 35 mph.    I headed into that for the first 4 miles, then turned left onto a secondary road and a long hill in mile 5.    Once over the hill, the road switched to dirt and with mud season in full bloom, I ran the next mile in loose mud.  Finally with 2 miles to go, I was back on the highway headed for home and the wind at my back.

Sunday wasn't much better, but I decided to run the railtrail early while the temp was still below freezing, hoping for solid footing in the snow, ice and mud.   The trees blocked some of the wind and the footing was solid, but rough in places.    Got in 7 miles for another 40 mile week .

Anyway, last week's 40 miler made it 3 weeks in a row at that distance, now it's time to ease up for a week and let the training kick in.    Plan today is to take the dog out for a good walk, but no running.

mKayc... I like your approach to racing, relax, run the distance and not fret over your time.    It's a great way to stay in shape, have fun and spend time around like minded people.    Nice workout at the gym yesterday...

Dan... that's a nice breather you had in Florida away from the Rat Race.     And home just in time for 56 degree weather and a run in shorts.   Life's good, eh?

                      Chantilly75

mKayc I hope you get your maniac shirt!   It is hard to overcome health problems. Did you have to get a root canal?

(I get my skirts from www.runningskirts.com if you're interested.)

NH Runner That sounds like a hard way to get 40 miles…in the mud!  Have a good cut-back week.

You must be doing some dog-washing there…does Sim mind a bath?

justrundan Sounds like you had a fun holiday.  And nice to be outside in shorts at this time of year.

I worked the entire holiday weekend, so no bunnies seen at my house carrying chocolate.

We had a snowstorm this morning, I ran 7 miles on the track. Supposed to melt off later.

Tuesday, 4/7... an easy 4 miler on the railtrail today, still working on recovery.   I'm hoping for a better run tomorrow, but the weather's a little "iffy" 'til Friday, so we'll see.

Chantilly... Sim acts like I'm the Grim Reaper when I tell him it's bath time, he has this look of dread on his face...lol    Once the bath's over though, he goes into his "Happy Dance" routine, tearing through the house like a dog who's just been given a 5 pound bone...lol     Tough work schedule for you still, but you seem to be maintaining nicely.    Swing by the store tomorrow and grab yourself a box of chocolates, you've earned 'em...

Just a quick note to say I'm still alive   Had a small set back a few days before marathon and then was off of work for a week.  Made it through the marathon, but lack of training and heat took their toll and finished in 3:58:34, which turned out to be 4th in AG?! Took last week off to rest knee and brain.  Got out for first run post marathon today, 4/7/15, 6.4 miles in about an hour.  Even better, I got rained on...

Will reply and comment on your messages a bit later...

                            Crazy Diamond

Life happens. December was filled with caring for my long distance parents and chronically ill sister, then a bump in the road for me. Days became weeks, then months passed and I lost touch with all of you. I’m sorry.

When I last posted … I was experiencing some mild swelling and pain on the top of my left foot that I attributed to extensor tendonitis.   When a regime of various therapies resulted in no improvement and increased foot pain, I decided to see my physician for an x-ray in late January.   The results were no visible fracture, but consistent with Freiberg’s infraction. I was referred to a foot specialist, placed in an immobilizing boot and no activity.

Freiberg’s is an uncommon condition where as some type of trauma caused an interruption to the blood supply to the bone, causing the bone to soften. My 3rd metatarsal head had collapsed with some damage to the cartilage at the joint. The podiatrist is a marathoner and shares the same disease, so he understood my goal to be active again. Knowledge is power, but most of what I read didn’t lead me to feel hopeful about running again. At this point I was going bonkers – all of my running plans for the year were vanishing! I was angry at myself for not dealing with it sooner and extrapolated about what may have caused it.

Spent 6 weeks in the boot with no activity for 3 weeks, then another x-ray showed no progression of the disease. Podiatrist gave the ok to slowly begin running 5 minutes every other day. He prescribed metatarsal pad orthotic to be worn in all my shoes. Presently, I’m running every other day and up to 4 miles. There is some discomfort I attribute to the orthotic and Morton’s neuroma that developed due to the Frieberg’s.

Lord only knows what the future will bring. The damage to the bone is done. Custom orthotics($$$), surgery and giving up running are my options if the swelling and pain return. I’ll go slow and see what happens.

Thanks for reading. I’d rather it was a race report!

                              Run strong, friends!

                              Quo Vadis?

Dan – Nice time of year to enjoy FL, when you return to WI spring is around the corner.

NH Rich – 40 miles/week x 3 WTG! As I dealt with my little set back, I often thought how you never appeared discouraged when dealing with injuries. Cross training on the recumbent bike helped keep me from completely falling apart!

Chantilly – Love you new avatar! Sorry about the arthritis and adjusting your race plans. Any recent “Joe Cool” sightings at the track?

Mary Kay – When I think of perseverance, you definitely come to mind! Hope you have recovered from the dental stuff. If your race calendar is any indication, you certainly have!

Ray – Sorry about the set back, but Congratulations on completing the marathon and the rain! Hope there is more to come of both.

AZ - I’m sure you are floating as you enjoy your AZ trails! Hopefully, the snow and cold will be gone when you return to MN.

Hello to WDWRich, Fletch, Art, Sluggo and Jo!

Yesterday - ran 3.5 easy miles at the indoor track. Most running days are at the indoor track in case i have to bail.  Continue to adjust to running in the orthotics -- hate.them.

                                Run strong, friends!

                                Quo Vadis?
