Felicificative Friday Penguins (Read 28 times)

Barking Mad To Run

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the caommon benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

      Felicificative: tending to make happy

Which is what Friday does, right?  So hope all the Penguins are happy today and happy it's Friday.

AFM:  I got nice stories from my run yesterday!

I got off work early yesterday, then after my appointment ran at Randolph Air Force Base.  Weather was very sunny, about 62 degrees, bright blue skies, but that wind was blowing at about 25 mph, making for quite the workout the times I was running right into it. Even so, it was a beautiful day for a run/walk and, because I was out there a bit earlier than I usually am, I got to enjoy watching all the pilot-training jets taking off and flying over me.

I was pretty much alone out there on the Randolph running trail, except for 2 other runners I encountered, so it was like I had my own flying escort as I ran along, lo, with these jets flying overhead.   Probably a good thing I did encounter another runner at one point though,  because the trail goes over part of the flightline and at that point I was looking down at my watch.  So I didn't notice the red light on the barrier had gone on.  Which means STOP AND WAIT!   Luckily a runner behind me was close enough to me to grab my shirt and give it a pull, making me stop and look around...and he pointed...and when I looked back at the flight line, a jet was coming, taxi-ing down the flight line, and went right past us.  Whoa!  Very cool!  But glad the guy stopped me or I might have been some 'sticky stuff' on jet wheels, lol.     Well, these training jets are pretty small aircraft, but even so...

The other person I encountered was a little lady, maybe about my age, or a bit older.   We ran together for a bit, then I'd stop for my walk break, she would go ahead, I'd catch up and pass her, she'd catch up again.   At the end of the running trail you can go the 'long way' back to the gym by taking the road or turn around and go back on the trail, which is the shorter way.  I took the long way, the lady took the shorter way.  So when I eventually got back to the trail again, she was now way ahead of me, about 1/4 mile or so.  I decided to see if I could catch her before she got to the start/finish area of the trail, and gave chase.  She did finish before be but I'd closed the gap to about 40 yards when she got to the finish, so a nice strong finish for me.  Now the thing about this lady - she ran barefoot the whole time.  I had a nice chat with her after we both got back to the base gym.  Very nice lady and it was fun running with her.

Beautiful weather, my own flying show, a nice "chase" with a very nice lady, a jet encounter and, because I took the longer route back to the gym, I also got to enjoy running by the water canal area out there - the course also goes by the base golf course - that has a spraying fountain, ducks, geese, etc, in the water, picnic table areas, and so forth..very scenic and pleasant. A very nice outing at the Air Force Base, a very enjoyable run/walk!

Today is a rest day and I will pick up my packet for my 5K this weekend, which happens to be on Sunday morning.   For once, I have no race on Saturday for a change.

      Return To Racing

Geez, Scotty, you have more excitement on one run than I have in a year.  Better watch out for those jets.

Back from the health club and when DW gets back from hers, we will probably do 6 or 7 inside.  Looks like another snowstorm is headed our way....  !!!!

Have a Super weekend everyone !!!

        Zelanie

Morning!  Scotty, every run is an adventure for you!

Cherie- Awesome run! I am so happy for you!

Me- Probably run 14 tonight, unless I am just not feeling it, then I will take a RD.

Im fighting bronchitis and have not been able to run in past 7 days. UGH.  So far behind pace bunny now. My twins have had strep throat. I just got over a sinus Infection and then got this. So sick of being sick!  Going to gym later to try weights. No way I can run yet. Still coughing up my lungs.

              Is it Spring yet?

                Hi Pens...

                I agree with Jerry!

Zel: 14?! You are just crushing it...

D: Surgery on Valentine's Day? How romantic... Wink

Traci: That is the absolute worst... Being sick and having sick kids at the same time, crappy weather. Bleh!

As for me, it is actually raining here, finally, and I had to dig out my long pants. The temperature is finally below 60. DW and I went out for five miles last night in the misty rain and made it home before the downpour. I have my second day of conferences today and will likely do the same run tonight. Marathon training starts Monday so I hope I can control this stupid PF. It is not completely gone but at least I can manage it. The night splint could be next.

                Have a nice weekend.  LOB!

                SheCan

I do believe it really is a felicificative Friday.

Scotty-- yikes@ about going out in the flight path.  Glad someone caught you!  Yup, those days with heavy winds does seem to double the workout for a runner.  But the hey, we're tough!

Jerry--- good luck getting the run in before the snow fall hits!   Glad you enjoyed the movie.   Your analysis was about the same as my DD's of it.  Thought it was a super good love story.

Zelanie-- good luck with the long run tonight, otherwise enjoy your rest day!

tracilynn- wow, hope you and your household start feeling better.  I do remember that's how it was when we had small children in the house also.  I guess you are all getting immune system workouts.

Jack-- good for you for surviving first day of P/T conferences, and still finding time for a run.  Whenever you start training, just go lightly on the speed until the PF feels better.

I have short recovery run today.

                  Cherie

And a felicificative Friday to all!!  I'm definitely happy it's Friday -- tomorrow I will do laundry and attempt to make a lemon layer cake with fluffy frosting, for a Superbowl party on Sunday.  And then I'm taking off work on Monday, because I doubt I'll get home before 1AM Sunday evening.  DH is from Washington, so we're rooting for the Seahawks, woo-hoo!!

scotty -- glad you didn't get run over by a plane, and woo-hoo for the barefoot runner!!

Jerryb -- time to build an igloo!!

Zelanie -- good luck with your 14!!

Docket -- how are you feeling?  Hope your intervals go well!!

traci -- wishing for spring here too!  Hope you feel better!!

Jack -- glad y'all stayed mostly dry!!

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

                    Dad on the run.

Well after contacting Harris and Doyle through email, website and facebook and threatening to contact the BBB as well as a lawyer it would seem that I have finally gotten someone's attention. They sent out a HVAC company to my house yesterday only to find out that I had a broken zone board and bad wiring on my heat pump, so the heating strips would not even kick on to help maintain temp in my house thus the reason for the 52 degrees. The HVAC repair man was able to rig it so that at least one zone would kick on. It took several hours but my house finally warmed up and maintained. They will be coming out next week to replace the zone board at the expense of Harris and Doyle.

I'm only at 6.62 miles for this week so I definitely need to get out today, tomorrow and sunday for some miles.

                      faster than a glacier

5 miles on the TM this morning, meh. ITBS started flaring up toward the end but whatever. I've resigned myself to the fact it's just going to hurt to run the next couple of weeks until the race so it is what it is. I'll do what I can this week and next, then not run at all the week leading up to the race and see how it goes. Then I'm out of the running business for at least a month after that to rest and strengthen my hips and glutes. ITBS WILL BE CONQUERED!

Have you gone for a massage? Last year I had pain in the ITB and it was being caused by some knots I had in my lower back/upper glutes area. He got the knots out (it hurt like hell) but man, it sure did clear up what I thought was ITBS.

Scotty - you do have the most adventurous runs.  At least you didn't run into the plane, so it won't add to your list of odd things you've run into over the years.

Jerry - enjoy your run, even if it is indoors.  When I saw the Accuweather map showing the spring outlook

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/spring-outlook-six-more-weeks/22312537 I was not happy.  I imagine you were even less happy.  Fortunately, they haven't been all that accurate this winter, so I have hopes they are wrong this time too.

Z - I hope you get your 14 in.  If not, enjoy your rest day.

Damaris - hope the intervals go well.  You must be feeling better.

Tracilynn - sorry about all the illness.  Some winters seem to be like that, one thing after another, all of which make you desperate for sunshine and healing.  Take it easy.

Jack - enjoy your cool rainy day run.

Cherie - hope your recovery run goes well after your LR yesterday.

HopesMom - have fun at your Superbowl party.

Jimmy - good job getting some action on your HVAC.  This is no time to have no heat.  Ours was making odd noises one night, on one of the coldest nights we've had, but it seems to be okay now.  Jim thought it had gotten ice inside the unit which was hitting the fans.

SO42 - you might want to do some easy runs on race week.  I've read people who said that not running at all can make your legs feel stiffer and more stale, making it hard to run at all.  A couple of short easy runs shouldn't hurt the ITB too much, but will keep your blood flowing and muscles loose.

AFM:  It's a gray day, but over 30, so I'm running outside, hurray hurray!  We donate blood this afternoon, so I can't wait for the real warmup later (40!)  I'll stick to the neighborhoods where I can run in the street since there is still a fair amount of snow beside the roads.  The next few days should get rid of a lot of that though.  It's supposed to get above freezing every day for the next week or so.

                            Return To Racing

Sooo...DW comes home and wants to run outside. 20F and no wind.  Attached the YaxTrax and ran over to our local park that has a .5m path that was plowed, except for a few drifts and 3 deer.  Still a few inches of packed snow on the path but got 4 miles in.  Felt good except a little tough on the ankles when running in the footsteps.  Now  its time for some good bar food.

Enjoy your runs today.  Feel better Traci.
